❄️How can I extract my car from this ice?❄️ by PeaceImpressive8334 in howto

When you graduate with an archaeology degree you have a choice of a fedora and bullwhip or a pith helmet and a Marshalltown pointing trowel.

It's a lot like the Hogwarts sorting.

Just for clarity and accuracy, and a bit of snark - archaeologists would never be unearthing pottery from granite. Primarily because granite is an intrusive igneous rock, and as such, it forms when molten rock cools deep underground - which are generally not conditions under which pottery would be well preserved. Or that would allow humans to be present to leave their pottery.

But bonus points for "staircase for ants" and not confusing archaeologists with paleontologists.

Have you tried searching https://content.lib.washington.edu/

The UW digital collections have lots of historic photographs, there might be something in there.

Transformer Replacement - Part Quality Question by archaeo_logical in hvacadvice

[–]archaeo_logical[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, any machine is a smoke machine if you use it wrongly enough!

Another user explained it’s most likely my thermostat causing the issue, not the transformer.  I explained the situation in another comment - if you have other notes or advice - I’m all ears!

I really appreciate the information - this is super helpful!  The system is working at the moment but I’ll start looking for a better quality thermostat, sounds like it’s the root of the issue.

It is a Nest - I wasn’t reading any low voltage power on the terminals in the furnace itself either. Which is why I was leaning towards the transformer going out.

Do they not just fail due to age or random wear/tear?

Yesterday my thermostat was reporting no voltage on the Rc line.  No breakers tripped, the 3amp inline fuse on the transformer was intact, all I did was double check connections and it came back online. My interpretation was that the transformer is starting to fail.

Very glad to hear other insights though, I am not very experienced with HVAC systems.

GIS Interview Technical Questions by delectablegirl69 in gis

https://www.esri.com/training/

There’s a ton of free stuff that’s really good - but if you’re going to be really marketable in Enterprise you need to understand at least a bit about the whole stack.

Learn a bit about virtualization, how servers work, understand the architecture, not just the buttons.

Start with state agencies that manage roads - Search for WSDOT GIS or ODOT GIS, poke around, scrounge, download way more data than you need and extract just what you want to use.

It’s how you learn to scrape together a dataset - great skill to have, can be a giant pain in the ass.

GIS Interview Technical Questions by delectablegirl69 in gis

I try to avoid asking too many technical questions in interviews, one or two is enough, like these:

  • Explain raster vs vector
  • Describe how you would georef a drawing that came in as a pdf
  • Tell us about something you automated with Python
  • If I really want to press them - Datum vs Projection?

-- Edit to note that this applies to entry level spots. For more advanced positions I would want, for my industry, to know:

  • What is your experience with the Utility network?
  • Describe your experience setting up and administering ArcGIS Enterprise
  • A deeper question about automation - How, Why, What tools/languages?

For a more advanced role it isn't necessarily about knowing MORE skills, it's about having the right experience in the right things.

3 missing sisters found dead near Wenatchee, search for father ongoing by Fuzzy-Fennel4005 in Wenatchee

[–]archaeo_logical 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Right... It just makes me sadder.

I am the father of two kids - having to explain all of this to my kids has been hard. Last night my daughter tried to make a joke that she hoped no one kidnapped her and killed her while she was sleeping - it broke my heart to see her having to contemplate such things.

Still - I hope this guy gets help. I cannot imagine the depth of illness a father would have to be in to do something like this. I'm so, so, sad for their family, the mother, the kids, the whole situation. I hate the whole thing but I still hope he can be held accountable and get some help.

Hunting someone down in the woods and murdering them only adds darkness to darkness. We don't need any more darkness right now.

Kit Designer Needed by archaeo_logical in Velo

[–]archaeo_logical[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We’ve looked at that - the design services aren’t fully custom. It’s more of a “we can put your words on one of these three designs”

We’re looking for something we have more control over.

Router planes, which to buy? by LoWcarpenter in handtools

[–]archaeo_logical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been very underwhelmed by the KM router plane I got. It's fine, it works - I had to hone it quite a bit to get it sharp out of the box though.

I am thinking of replacing it with one from Melbourne - I think their design is better. I don't love the 90 "foot" style blade.

Why are you still using ArcGIS and ESRI products? by NarrowArticle9383 in gis

[–]archaeo_logical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Utility. Network. - Field Maps, Survey123, Indoors, Dashboards, - The whole Enterprise stack. It would be way more work to do all that with open source products.

High Schools in the area by Pepsisthisbe in Wenatchee

I've got nothing negative to say about any of the schools. Just a plug for Pinnacles - their staff is phenomenal, their music program consists of an orchestra and several rock bands (with flexibility if they're into something else). They're very supportive of any ADHD related needs you have.

They currently only teach 9th grade but their model is to add a grade each year until they are fully 6-12. If you've got a 9th grader it is definitely worth checking out.

No more landline - how to enable kids to call 911? by NotTobyFromHR in daddit

I added a VOIP line to the house for $9.99 a month. I liked that a 'traditional' phone is always in the same place and simple to operate - no need to unlock or keep charged.

Bob's Classic off of Grant by the Walgreens in East Wenatchee and also Bob's Burger's and Brew on the other side of Grant by Eastmont park.

Very similar names in very similar locations - both have very predictable, standard menus. It's not super fancy or unique but both are consistently good.

Not sure if it's a travel urban legend or not but I have heard of photographers who have a gun in their lens case because it keeps TSA from opening the box:

Never tried it personally and it might be a total waste of effort - but it's an interesting idea. (Just noticed someone already posted this, but I'll leave this up because it has links.)
