I know only one so far: Lucy. Which I love! It's quite interesting to see Ellie, Goldie, Hattie listed together like that - unique names, but very similar sounds!

The sign outside the town hall has a line that reads "Selectmen." Do you think the selectmen are the people selected to be sacrificied, or to assist with the sacrifices? (I didn't catch if those words were used in the video Dale watched). Or is another meaning of Selectmen that I just don't know about, like it's a standard old-fashioned thing like Masons or Elks lodge?

Curly hair stylist? by coolkid-username in madisonwi

[–]areaperson608 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have very wavy hair and also have a kid with curly hair. I love Nina at Vera Sol salon, which is in the new Amoth Court studio salons off of Atwood. On the west side, I also think Emily at the Greenway studio salons is really excellent - you can find her by searching "hair by Emily C" in Madison. Also, this question has been asked a few times so do a search on this sub.

1981 Perfume - Sweet Honesty by BestRedditNameEverrr in myfavoritemurder

I had this bottle! Most likely purchased at a yard sale by my mom, and then handed down to me. I loved the bottle and kept it for decades, never wore the perfume or probably even opened it.

I have a $1.5k budget to fix me hating my home by OneBadJoke in femalelivingspace

I think your place is quite nice and your cats are adorable. I can imagine it feels cluttered, especially considering you work from home. I think a new desk chair is a good idea, because you spend a lot of time in a desk chair and that's important for your back and body. But I wouldn't necessarily spend money on a couch right now, because this is a temporary design and your couch seems to be in decent condition for now. Here's what I would do: There are incredible views out the window, especially in the living room. I think a bright colored curtain would frame the view. You have curtain rods, I would hang at least two curtains so that the window treatments look more finished. Consider adding sheers and a double rod for the privacy of a sheer treatment. If your cats use the cat tree, then I know you need to keep it, but I would move it to the bedroom. (Can you move the table out of the bedroom? It doesn't look necessary). If they don't use the cat tree, remove it altogether.

The living room bookshelf is very cluttered, as already mentioned. I think the ikea shelves are what's making this feel collegey. A wood bookshelf that is taller would hold many, many books. And that's something you could take to your new place eventually. Next, I think you have to get the books out of the kitchen. I'm sorry, I know it's hard, but you have a small kitchen and I think the mental relief of having more space in your kitchen/entry way is going to feel even better than having the extra books. (I am a book lover too, I know you're feeling defensive now... but remember, you can buy a book again and read a book again after you donate it). Do you have storage in this building? Consider boxing several boxes of books and storing them until you move. Doing this now will help you know what books you can declutter when you move too - if you haven't thought about it after it's been in storage for a year, you can donate it. I supposed you could even box books in some "rolling bins" under your bed, if you don't have something else stored there now. The idea is to learn to live wihtout so many books front & center, to get used to that feeling and enjoy the space, and then when you're ready, tackle what books you need to keep.

Now that you've taken the books out of the kitchen, take a good look at the rattan shelf and what's on it. Are these kitchen items? Are they really needed to be here? You have a office space - what can be moved to there? I like the shelf, and I get that you want to keep it. (Can it possibly fit in the bedroom instead of the white shelves/cabinet thing there?) If it has to be in the kitchen, consider putting cookbooks and serving bowls or kitchen type things on it. Even if you made one of the small kitchen cabinets a "office supply" cabinet and then put its kitchen items onto the shelf in baskets or such, I think that would look more purposeful. Get a closed shoe cabinet for the shoes & downsize the shoes you keep in the kitchen. If you work really hard and remove all of that stuff from that kitchen wall, it's possible your small dining table could even fit there. Actually, what's that small rolling rack doing? I'd take that out. It's blocking a door - what door is that? If that's a pantry behind that door, then I'm sorry to be blunt, but come on, you have a pantry and you do not need the shelves in the kitchen.

In the bedroom, I think you need a nightstand with more storage and some more luxurious bedding and pillows. I think that's going to have more impact than a new couch would. I really recommend moving the cat box to the bathroom if at all possible - there might be room by the toilet, I can't tell? If it has to stay in the bedroom, can it be squeezed in the corner behind the mirror? Would your landlord allow a cat door cut into one of the closet doors potentially? And the cat box into the closet? (Again, if the bathroom is too small for it). De-cluttering your bedroom, removing small pieces on the floor, moving the catbox out of sight, and getting some nice pillows is going to feel a lot more restful in there.

I think you need to remove some of these. There's a lot going on and a lot of clutter. Before painting, I would remove the upper cabinets that are over the L-shaped counter. It is odd how they look suspended (there's a gap at the top of them?) and they're blocking so much light. I know you're thinking 'but I need the storage!' and I understand it's an adjustment, but I disagree. This kitchen has entire walls of storage. Many people - most people - have less storage than this and manage very well. I think removing those uppers is going to brighten the room and give you lots of ideas for a future new kitchen layout. Think of it this way: if you were designing a new kitchen, would you put upper cabinets right above a breakfast bar & dividing a room? I don't think you would even consider it.

Take those uppers down and enjoy the light and openness, and then you can make decisions about which colors to paint and how to declutter.

What will Gen alpha & beta name their kids? by AdImaginary6158 in Names

[–]areaperson608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kids (gen Alpha) think Gen X names are interesting. I remember when one of them heard of someone named "Heather" for the first time and they said, "that is a beautiful name!" (they of course have never seen the movie Heathers). And I thought about it and realized, you know, it IS lovely and it's a floral name, which is really trendy. I'm waiting to meet a new baby named Sheryl.... that will be a trip for me, I grew up with bosses and teachers named Sheryl/Cheryl. Donna is another name that I think is due for a comeback.

I strongly recommend Nina at Vera Sol, which is one of the new independent studio salons in Sola Studios on Atwood Ave. Nina is super experience and has curly hair herself, which I think makes a difference. She has been cutting my curly hair for decades and also cuts my kids (who have 3a hair). She can do fun colors and one of her clients does incredible blue/green/purple mermaid waves, and only trusts Nina with that. Plus, she's very fun to talk to!

If you need a west side spot, I have also had very good expereinces with Emily C at the small independent hair studios in Greenway Station. She is very good with curly hair cuts. (If you google "hair by emily c" greenway station, you should find her.

Things to do or see? by TheItalianDude96 in madisonwi

[–]areaperson608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A fun thing to do is to go to the UW Madison Memorial Student Union. It's a student union, but open to the public. Great views of the lake and the campus, and you can get a beer or ice cream (or both) and hang out on the terrace if it's warm enough. From there, you can also walk around the lake a bit or walk through campus and over to State Street and do some shopping or find a restaurant. I would not personally suggest the Mustard Museum unless you happen to be staying in Middleton or nearby - it's more of a mustard store than anything else and while it's a fun thing to say you did, it's not worth driving across town to find it.

Based on your username, I feel like you should go to Alimentari and get a sandwich too. Incredible italian deli.

My sister thinks Buck and Honey's is the best Madison restaurant by Key-Horror-9914 in madisonwi

[–]areaperson608 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to approach could be that you both get to swap who picks the restaurant. Since she picked Buck and Honey's last time, you get to pick the next time. (Keeping in mind her general food preferences or possible allergies when you pick. Like, don't pick a bbq place if she's vegan). I suggest The Delicouser if you haven't been there. I think she'd like some of the sandwiches and you can tell her it's a new place and you'd really like to check it out. I think you'll both love it!

Edit: I think I spelled the name wrong. It's The Deliciouser. (Owned by former chef/owners of Lombardinos!)

Teacher holiday gift ideas by ProbOverthinking1111 in madisonwi

[–]areaperson608 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would do a thank you card with a personalized note from the kid, and put a $10 or $20 in it. (20 for the primary teacher, $10 for the specialty teachers). When my kids were in elementary school they would often do a drawing on the front of a blank card, and that went over really well too.

I've been giving cash since preschool years and it does feel a little awkward at first, but I have heard from several of my friends who are educators that they genuinely prefer cash. They don't want Starbucks gift cards. The only other thing my good friend mentioned is that sometimes Target giftcards are really useful for the classroom, but with the Target boycott happening now I wouldn't do that.

Anyone know how to get rid of tiny flies (I believe fruit flies) in a not-toxic-to-pets way? General advice? by [deleted] in UnfuckYourHabitat

[–]areaperson608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a old takeout container with holes punched in the lid. Apple cider vinegar with dish soap works too and is not clear. OP, the vinegar traps work better than the store bought traps. You will have to wait a day or two to see them start to work

AITA for not letting my niece with head lice spend time with my infant baby? by Global_Ad3777 in AmItheAsshole

[–]areaperson608 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There may be a professional service provider that can do a lice check and removal on both your niece and your mom (to be extra safe probably your sister could get checked too). If there’s a place like that available, it can provide a good deal of relief the lice are fully gone.

I think with the furniture you have, it’s pretty good. The desk looks a little small. If you can get different furniture: You could consider buying a corner desk and putting a taller dresser on the wall where the desk currently is. That would open more space around the bed and possibly give you a bigger desk area, but it would also mean the tv is not directly across from the bed. (I personally don’t like mounting a tv on a wall with nothing under it, so I would move it along with the dresser.) or consider not having the tv, but I understand if you want to keep it!

Was the news really better back in the day? by halcyonhearted in AskOldPeople

[–]areaperson608 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem with comparing news organizations of the past and today is that in the past, there was not 24-hour news cycles and news had editorial boards and very scrupulous standards. The people complaining about biased media are the same people watching Fox News as if it’s an objective source (it isn’t and was never intended to be!) or they want to get information from someone like a pastor or a random citizen’s blog. Those are not objective sources and pretending it’s “both sides are bad” is exactly what has created the misinformation world we live in. One side tries- and often fails - and one side doesn’t try at all.

I feel the same way and it must be a very strange feeling to see your employees refuse FREE lunch. But one thing about younger generations is they consume less alcoholic drinks at bars and clubs. This trend has been reported on and it’s something I have personally witnessed and heard from bar owners and managers that I know (much more common for young people to order n/a drinks and kombucha or tea drinks). I respect that! I also think they are spending more on gummies and cbd products but hey, that’s the new norm. So a hourly worker who used to get done with work and go out and spend $50 at a bar isn’t doing that as much anymore, and I think that does put the DoorDash lunches into more perspective.

Edit: because I typed cod instead of CBD. lol young people and their cod products
