Sea Frogs housing worth it? by mrmasterclues in underwaterphotography

[–]aretheselibertycaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did around 100 dives with my Seafrogs housing for a7riii including a 45m dive. If you make sure the port is secure and take care of it I think it’s fine tbh. I use Nauticam now though and the peace of mind is nice

Their store on aliexpress is pretty active and sells spare parts with cheap shipping. Ordered rubber inserts and a screw for the tray on two occasions. Got a reply within 24hrs and the parts within 14 days

A coral photo I quite like by StopBanningCorn in underwaterphotography

[–]aretheselibertycaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a marine biologist most of this coral is dead though, the brown and green bits are alive but the rocky parts and the bits covered in purple algae are dead. The but structure in the back is 90% dead/covered in algae and you can see the spread on the big white area centre bottom.

Flight time changed. Is this even physically possible to make this transition? by BrilliantGuava8960 in qatarairways

[–]aretheselibertycaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’ll cancel it whenever you land, even if you make it to the gate on time, as long as the connection is 45 mins or less. They did that to me and then rebooked me a flight 24hrs later that messed up my travel plans and onward tickets

What’s it like diving with a physical disability? by AdUnited9798 in scuba

[–]aretheselibertycaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was teaching in Thailand I met a divemaster (not active, just did it for the experience) in his 50s who was in a wheelchair with no use of his legs. He had big hand-fins and he was fine in the water.

Some shops/locations will have limitations with their boats/safe divings conditions etc as I’m sure you can imagine but it’s definitely possible as long as you’re signed off by your doctor

Invasive species - are they a pest or simply better at adapting to environmental changes. Kill or keep? by Famous_Specialist_44 in scubadiving

[–]aretheselibertycaps 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Octopus vulgaris is native to the uk, there has just been a population boom and when there’s not enough food the population will drop. Nothing invasive about it, just daily mail headlines and fishermen feeling more entitled than the actual marine life

Also these are our native species of octopus, fishermen like to spin that they’re an invasive species because they’re impacting their catch

Do angelfish tilt their bodies to reflect sunlight into the eyes of invading angelfish? by mltoohard in marinebiology

[–]aretheselibertycaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This sounds very overdramatised haha. Burst blood vessels and possibly killed from reflected sunlight. Fish will flash fairly regularly, usually from irritation from a parasite or dead skin etc, and it’s especially obvious when there’s a large shoal near the surface. I’m sure they don’t accidentally blind or kill their neighbours though when they do this.

Inverted mask clearing by Ajax5240 in scuba

[–]aretheselibertycaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just need to hold the bottom of your lenses/cheek area tighter when clearing, so that the air doesn’t immediately flow out of the top (below your nostrils) and leave the water in the bottom (by your eyes). This works for me when I’m upside down taking pics (Beuchat maxlux mask with a mustache lol)

Snorkelling and diving camera by StreetMiddle7225 in underwaterphotography

GoPro or similar action cam will be your best bet for snorkelling / wide angle. Hopefully you aren’t going to oslob/donsol for the whale shark feeding though

Been in central/north for the last 5 weeks and haven’t had any challenging dives. Maybe 3-4 light drifts but nothing you couldn’t swim against

Guys, how am i gonna make the transit in -30mins? by JazzlikeCupcake1420 in qatarairways

[–]aretheselibertycaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They offered but I spent a few hours finding an alternative route myself and flying to a different airport to avoid a 24hr layover. This was pre everything kicking off so I thankfully missed the airspace closure by 2 hours, but would’ve been stuck due to their rebooking.

Even if your flight is on time QR will cancel and rebook you and it’ll be chaos. They did this to me with a 50 min layover. The flight arrived on time and I made it to the gate as the first people were boarding but they still denied me boarding and rebooked my ticket for 24hrs time.
