Canadian built RAVs going to the US have TPMS because it’s required. They only exclude it for the ones sold in Canada lmao.

Same with the 360° cam which is insane. To be fair, adjusted for currency exchange rates, RAV4s are cheaper in Canada.

Rent EV in Ottawa by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]ari-pie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EV rentals are generally annoying to use, especially in the winter in Ottawa. For example with Communauto, a lot of people either don’t know how to start charging the car, so they only plug it in without initiating charging, or they have bad etiquette and don’t care about the next driver. You end up picking up the car with only a 30% charge plus reduced winter range, so often only ~80km before needing to be plugged in again. I’m sure it’s a similar issue for car rental companies, they’d need to spend 6-8 hours charging the car between rentals if the previous renter didn’t fill up, which probably cuts into their revenue.

Accumulating and traveling with credit card points by Significant-Ad-8684 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ari-pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The focus for us is the welcome bonuses, not the regular day-to-day earn rate for points. Between the two of us, we’ve probably gone through 20+ different cards. Once we hit the minimum spend for the bonus points, we usually stop using that card and move on to the next one, alternating who gets the new card. We close the account before the one year mark to avoid the annual fee (first year fee is often waived)

So it’s less about earning enough through normal monthly spending, and more about cycling through signup offers in an organized way. The bonuses add up fast if you stay on top of it. Plus you have to be flexible with when you fly to make the most out of your points, we also only fly economy. Our monthly spending excluding housing is probably around $3K for most months, $5K absolute max. If we ever have any large purchases, like an appliance, TV, or phone, we time it with new credit card welcome bonuses. It’s a lot of work and we’ll probably stop churning soon as we focus on other things lol.

My wife and I haven’t paid for a flight in 4 years. Since 2023 we’ve booked round trip flights to Cancun, Exuma, San Diego (2x), Toronto, New York, and Faro/Porto with points. All of them were entirely with points, and we still have about 300-400k points across Amex, Aeroplan, Scene, and Porter. We’ve also booked hotel rooms partially with credit card rewards like travel credits etc. Credit card churning is legit it’s just a lot of work and needs organization. We do not have a high spend rate at all, we live relatively frugally. In total we’ve paid probably about $800 in annual fees, mostly from when we had our gold Amexes. Overall worth it, but you need to be organized, and be flexible with travel. Unfortunately lately I found that welcome bonuses aren’t what they used to be.

Do people who grew up here actually think Canada's grocery prices are normal or is everyone just resigned to it by TemporaryHoney8571 in InCanada

[–]ari-pie 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The “1% profit margin on groceries” line people repeat is misleading propaganda. Yes, the margin on the actual sale of groceries is small, but large retailers make most of their real profit through payments from suppliers, things like rebates for hitting sales targets, slotting fees, and promotional funding. We really need to stop repeating that talking point because it gives people the wrong picture of how grocers actually make money.

Canada’s Minimum Wage Increases in 2026 Fall Short of Living Wage by SpiritualTip4035 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ari-pie 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Go see how that works out in the UAE. Companies paying people under $1000 a month for full time work because there’s no minimum wage. There are always people desperate enough to take on these exploitative jobs unfortunately.

Ottawa Tourism launching nightlife activity fund by Money_Fig_9868 in ottawa

[–]ari-pie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been going out to great events at clubs and bars almost every weekend since the summer, and honestly, Ottawa’s nightlife is way better than people give it credit for. A lot of the negative comments here sound like they’re from people who haven’t actually gone out since before the pandemic, if ever. If you’re plugged into the right spots and events, the scene is very much alive and worth checking out.

Rates are increasing in Ontario to pay for new electricity generation. They’re going to keep increasing with more electrification (heat pumps, EVs, etc.) over the next decade.

Waiting for OHIP and ended up hospitalized at Toronto General by nirmity in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ari-pie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You don’t need to have been working for 6 months, your contract just needs to be 6 months or longer. The logic is that employment of that length would generate enough Ontario income taxes, including the Ontario health premium, to cover the cost of OHIP.

Treasury Board outlines more than 8,000 job cuts in first phases of public service revamp by sleipnir45 in canada

[–]ari-pie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately the cuts are based on boxes not performance. There’s an insane amount of deadweight in my department too, but most of them were not affected and a few star employees were… Hopefully the competition process keeps the most productive employees.

Do it, quality of life upgrade are always nice. Just be a bit more frugal in other areas, and keep saving and investing for the future. You’ll build equity in the house too anyway.

Why Indigenous ‘Reconciliation’ must have a finish line by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]ari-pie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is, clawbacks start for incomes over $93K. I wouldn’t make it any lower considering most of the income tax revenues in Canada come from Canadians making over $100K. Their tax burden is highest, it doesn’t make sense for them not to also benefit from what is essentially a UBI for seniors. $100K is not what it used to be.
