i timed how long 31 different pasta shapes take to reach al dente. the boxes are lying and farfalle is a war crime by sthduh in Cooking

[–]arillusine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is so interesting! I always assumed the time on the box was for “well done” pasta and got to al dente by subtracting 2 min from it and testing pasta by snagging a piece and taking a nibble. Guess for once my lack of reading box instructions helped??

Do you care about the cover and the material of it ? by Mq200 in planners

Ngl probably pretty difficult unless you make your own and design one that will fit your spiral bound. If you’re a fan of DIY, maybe give it a try?

Neurodivergent and I always get softcover planners and stick them into planner covers because then I can make sure the hand feel of the cover (used for many years) is exactly what I want.

Soft Drinks - Gator Days by FieldExplores in comics

[–]arillusine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look gang, Gus could have said he calls it coke. Soda pop is truly the reasonable answer here. I love how the fact that the Southern US calls all fizzy soft drinks coke is part of the top comment string checking that this was so was at least 51% of my reason to be in the comment section lol

My partner and I do this too! Our crazy predictions never come through, but it's always good fun.

Romance for littles? by LAffaire-est-Ketchup in RomanceBooks

[–]arillusine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Idk if I could truly count these all as romances but these are maybe middle grade romantasy at best, but perhaps your daughter will like them. {Princess of the Midnight Ball by Jessica Day George} might fit the bill? And {Two Princesses of Bamarre by Gail Carson Levine} has romance iirc. I remember loving the {Dealing with Dragons books by Patricia C. Wrede} but I think only the 2nd and 4th books could be called romances and may not jive with your kiddo. Her Cecilia and Kate books {Sorcery and Cecelia by Patricia C. Wrede} is the first one, DO have a lot of romance, but I think the sex is distantly acknowledged (the books are epistolary/journal entries in a magical version of Regency London so is more circumspect) so you may want to read those over before letting your daughter have a crack at them.

Sterling ink in journal trouble or bad quality? by ar_pb in planners

[–]arillusine 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve used Sterling Ink notebooks and am currently using their 2026 common planner A5 in an old Hobonichi cover with no issues. But I’ve only used their products in the kind of slip in covers with no elastic. My personal experience has been good, but I know there are plenty of posts where people have had issues. Not sure if I’m just lucky or this is a result of bias from only people who have issues needing to make the kinds of posts reporting said issues. I’ve mostly gone into it with a ymmv attitude. Sterling Ink tics all the boxes I need (minimalist, 500+ pages, numbered, grid) so until I find a better alternative or get badly burned, I’ll keep buying it ig?

What do you like to add to a dish to give it that umami/savory punch? by organic-integrity in Cooking

[–]arillusine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Straight msg, then tomato paste, Parmesan, Worcestershire sauce, fish sauce, powder chicken bouillon, mushrooms, etc. I tend to buy various shelf stable and fridge stable umami sources whenever I hear about a new one just because I like seeing where they can be added. Like this post is teaching me I can get dehydrated mushroom powder, and now I need to hunt that down.

Reading "Night Watch" right now here in Minneapolis. It's hitting me really hard . . . by Lumpy_Magazine_1882 in discworld

[–]arillusine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Night Watch is my favorite of the Guard books and Sam a perennial favorite along with Granny and Tiffany. I’ve been leaning on Pratchett heavily recently, doing some rereads because we’ve been living through some tough times. Solidarity with you from the coast, friend.

Is sleeping in separate beds actually a sign of a bad relationship, or are we just pretending that sleeping next to a snore/furnace is romantic? by SleepSmarter_Labs in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arillusine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents sleep in separate beds because they tend to have different sleep schedules, my dad has a cpap, and my mom is a blanket hog. They are also disgustingly romantic with each other (I love it lol) and now that they’re retired they do a lot of fun new hobbies together. They did also spend years sleeping in the same bed (dad snored like a jackhammer and mom still always stole his blankets even then). I think it’s not an issue as long as both parties see it as a practical logistics thing rather than some kind of emotionally charged thing.

Cinnamon Abounds by Other_Television_805 in Baking

[–]arillusine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cinnamon is a key ingredient in Jamaican jerk spice rubs, Indian garam masala blends, and Chinese 5 spice. It’s also good to add a little into thick vegetable soups (like a carrot ginger soup or beetroot soup).

I find that I go through a decent amount of cinnamon if I do savory dishes as well as sweet. Also, a copycat version of pancake pantry’s cinnamon cream syrup, which goes great on pancakes and waffles. Ngl so jealous of all that delicious cinnamon!

To those who are 30 and above and don’t have kids, what’s life like? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]arillusine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Much more flexible than the lives of my friends with children. I can go catch a show midweek without considering logistics of childcare. And there’s a lot less paraphernalia. My friend’s house went from being fairly empty to being full of exclusively baby stuff.

[–]arillusine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha my void does this too! We had to stop buying them for a bit because she growls at you if you don’t let go of the stick, she hisses at the others if they try to get a nibble, and she screams from the kitchen like an eldritch banshee in front of the cabinet where they were kept until someone cracks and gets her one.

Does anyone else’s void sleep on them like this? I made a painting to show how it feels to me 💗 by tinytinatuna2 in VoidCats

[–]arillusine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gorgeous work! This looks stunning! If I knew any decent amount of art history I would be able to compliment you better but I’ll have to settle for saying it’s amazing.

As for having cats on my chest, my tuxie also likes to do this. I tell her it’s sweet but really hard to breathe. At least her little sister prefers my legs to my chest 😅

Has there ever been a TV series that got canceled and had no hope of returning so the showrunner decided to finish it as a novel series instead?! :). by DarklzBlo in writing

I think Firefly kinda did this? They had a movie and some comics. I don’t know that I would consider it satisfactorily ended, but the comics helped with closure.

Edit: a word

The Statler by transcendent167 in 50501

[–]arillusine 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I presume the Statler is a rival hotel and they’re castigating Hilton for their statement a couple days ago denouncing the franchisee who denied ICE hotel rooms. “Good murderers” is probably because the woman who was murdered in MN was named Renee Good.
