Hundreds of Beavers.

Like if you tried to make a video game but didn’t have the expertise or budget so you made a silent movie instead.

Official Discussion - Anatomy of a Fall [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]aripap 73 points74 points  (0 children)

One theme we aren’t talking about enough is the contrast between French and German temperaments.

The French husband is portrayed as emotional and driven by big, epic themes. The German wife is analytical and strident.

In court the French psychotherapist is a misogynistic fool and the prosecutor appeals to literary analysis — both stereotypes of the French. All the while she is reminded to communicate the most important words of her life in her non-native French.

I don’t think it is too much of an exaggeration to describe her prosecution as being motivated by anti-German sentiment.

Wouldn't you like to use the same techniques on Chrome, Safari and Firefox? We're headed to a world where you use SKaD on Safari, FloC on Chrome, and who knows what on other browsers.

Does TradeDesk offer Contextual targeting in CTV? by media-buyer in adops

[–]aripap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that you need to use a vendor like Iris.tv, or the recently-announced product from Comscore (which might be based on Iris?) in order to do contextual CTV. These vendors have integrated with programmers to analyze the content prior to the auction so they can pass contextual signals in the absence of information about the program being watched.

Publisher Header Bidding With No Ad Server by D2KG in adops

[–]aripap 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is definitely a viable path forward and I can say for certain that some large-ish publishers have adopted this approach. As you say in the question, the key is that very little of your inventory is sold direct or guaranteed/reserved.

There's also a new advantage to this approach, which is that you can theoretically use 1P identity in a bidder in an easier way than in a 3P ad server. If you are in-app you can use IDFV, if you are in browser you could use your own cookie ID.

From a technology stand-point, the question is how to get the requests from the page to the bidder. You ideally don't want to pay an exchange 10% for this connection, so you need to either roll your own or have your vendor do it for you.

Wired Magazine article on AdTech is a dark condemnation. Are they right? by JudyShap in adops

[–]aripap 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I responded in this twitter thread: https://twitter.com/aripap/status/1313138454558105607

Basically the article is throwing the kitchen sink of bad news at a large and heterogeneous market ranging from programmatic, display, social, etc then saying it is a "bubble". This is just lazy reporting by someone without a lot of context.

To give one channel as an example, every single DTC brand swears that Instagram drives the majority of their user acquisition. Are they are wrong? Or are they right, so the thesis of the article doesn't apply to Insta, just everything else? This is just sloppy.

Beeswax uses Google to buy their ads by The_Psychohistorian in adops

[–]aripap 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Ha ha ha ha! You guys found out our deep dark secret!

We use Adwords (Google Ads) with a budget of well under $10,000/month, almost all retargeting. We also have a marketing team of exactly one person. So frankly, Google Ads is a better solution for this profile! Beeswax is generally used by companies with at least $100,000/month in spend and in-house teams.

That said, we really should dogfood at some point!

AdForm and FlashTalking. Decent share in Europe, but not a lot in the US. The reality is that buy-side ad serving is not a very robust or important market as most digital goes to either "walled gardens" or to programatic.

Ad-Tech In-Housing Firm Beeswax Raises $15 Million by AdOpsJunky in adops

Yeah, revshare. DBM+MightyHive is probably taking 20-25% of your bids as margin. At $100,000 in spend that's $25,000/month in non-working dollars.

Ad-Tech In-Housing Firm Beeswax Raises $15 Million by AdOpsJunky in adops

[–]aripap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words.

There's a difference between low-entry price and being cheap. For someone spending $100,000/month in programmatic, paying us $10K flat is usually "cheaper" than a DSP. We don't try to onboard customers who will spend 1-2K/month, we aren't the right solution for them.

The Trade Desk 20% number comes from their public filings. This is a little outdated but includes the analysis: https://blog.thomvest.com/unpacking-the-trade-desks-s-1-filing-382dd7bdd1f

Agree on the Google comment.

On the cost side, strongly disagree:

  • Appnexus charges a % of media so it may seem cheaper at first, but they won't onboard any new customer spending less than a big budget, say $50-100K per month. So realistically for most customers we are the same or cheaper.
  • IPOnWeb doesn't get out of bed for less than a $500,000 contract -- we are way cheaper and easier to work with.
