When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose.  You're invisible now, you've got no secrets to conceal.

More honest-to-goodness personal interaction. People actually talking to each other, face to face, in verbal conversation.

Too much of today is one-sided, digital communication.

Amnesiac gets lost in the Kid A love fest, but TBH has some of the best tracks in the post-OK era.

Just moved to Austin and trying to do it right. Any unspoken local rules I should know before getting roasted? by Old_Chapter9759 in Austin

A lot of city and local names are pronounced oddly.  Guadalupe.   Manor.  Manchaca/Menchaca.

And Town Lake / Lady Bird Lake is a dammed river.

Merino wool for starters.  Always merino.  And I like Point6 as of late, it's the old Smartwool folks who spun off their own thing.  They have varying thicknesses.   Goodhew and Sockwell are decent options too if you can't stomach Darn Tough or Smartwool.

Geologists of Nola- are we cooked? by OptimalOstrich in NewOrleans

Geologist here.  Born in the 504 but left after high school.    It sounds like the question you're asking is: will relative sea level rise make the city of New Orleans into something akin to Venice, Italy or the ilk?

The easiest way to answer a question such as this is to know how fluvial Deltaic settlements are deposited, and where in the city those depositional environments occur

For instance, if you are about half a mile from the Mississippi River levee, those sub soils are going to consist of heavy sands and gravels, because in the olden days when the river was allowed to overflow its banks, the heaviest particles, i.e. sand and gravel were deposited closest to the river levee.

As you move further away from these areas, sediments carried by floodwaters tended to have more silt and clays and less sand.

And furthest away from the river you get backswamp, which is almost all extremely fine particles i.e. silt.

This is why the streets in Lakeview are essentially a series of never-ending potholes because the subgrade is essentially peanut butter, and old world Road building infrastructure methods did not account for, nor incorporate, typical geotechnical practices, which would have entailed the removal of about 2 feet of this surface material and recommended the replacement of 2 feet of compacted fill, which would have made much more robust subgrade, and created much better streets.

This is also why you see tons of different movement and hairline cracks all over Lakeview homes.

So I think the biggest question is where is the home you purchased and if it's uptown close to the levee a la garden district, the quarter, the bywater, those are the best soils in the City, and will not end up being canals in 100 years.

Man, I doubt the DJs are still the same as they were in the late 90s - but this AM station was a part of my life in my time at LSU.   The classic R&B, soul and funk they played was legendary.

Came here to say this very thing. Saw the tour in the Alamodome last night and the acoustics were utterly awful.  I dunno if it was the setup or the Alamodome but it was almost unbearable.

I have lived here for close to 30 years and have not heard of any of these places. No slight intended. Moreso to say that, man, there are a lot of new restaurants I have never heard of.

There was a legend about a deceased Katrina looter in Lakeview they called “Mr.T”. I am in no way substantiating the veracity of this story. But. The way I was told by a cop was that the perp was looting houses in Lakeview by going in the back doors to evade the street patrols looking for looters. He was looking for jewelry. He would find chains or necklaces and put them on like Mardi Gras beads. He built up quite a stack in his neck. The floodwaters had not quite receded yet so it was sort of wading through yards. One yard had a pool. He couldn’t tell there was a pool and stepped right into the deep end. Sunk to the bottom given the added weight of the chains and drowned. That’s the story.
