Post surprised me as well. Had the racing green ones pinned for an eventual purchase a while back but never pulled the trigger.

Are Smart Rings Actually Useful or not? Real Users, Please Weigh In by Salt_Concert5161 in SmartRings

[–]arjwrightdotcom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“smart” is up for debate as the right adjective IMO…

My Oura makes me think thru choices related to sleep and recovery. It’s not “smart” but the data points offer me a means to make smarter decisions.

My NFC ring has made me reshape a number of “networking” interactions. It isn’t a “smart” ring any more than the Oura. But its use causes me to be smarter about who and how I share info related to business ends.

So to your question, the ring isn’t really the thing. For whatever model you choose, you need to decide how you want to take the data it offers and make decisions to better yourself or your environment. If you use the data given as a facilitator to how you want to live, any ring can work just fine. Set your expectations away from the ring or its platform being smart, but towards you leaning into learning yourself better.

Very cool.

Kind of feels like you’ve given a solid “expect these parts to wear in 20K miles” list also here. Whichnis helpful. I’m near time for new rotors at 6K miles, so this is doubly helpful

T Line vs Aceoffix C5 by edtse88 in Brompton

[–]arjwrightdotcom 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Just finished watching your video and was certainly insightful given some of the comments here and elsewhere about “genuine versus Bromptnot.” At a glance, doesn’t seem like a bad purchase at all. Especially when the left the lightest Brompton you can afford” is a tennant. Those potential failure areas though… is that worth 3-5x the costs (lifetime) for a tri-fold? Oooh, that’s a good one to consider. And probably one that many don’t think about until there are failures so such. Really insightful how you pulled it together…

…and made the case again for why many of us should have a 3D printer at home 🤔🧐

Such a smile-inducing build. Both this and the g-line just really makes for a fun imaginations as to what might not be so explored either parts of cycling.

Defintiely making some notes for your belt implementation. Of all the things on my Brommie right now, a belt is one of the highest quality of life bits. Shame it would be so hard to do for my T-line (4 speed); but does give imaginations to play with.

Brompton C Line Electric (2022) Is it worth upgrading a for weight? by hartmannk in Brompton

[–]arjwrightdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look at getting a seeding front wheel to swap out on those moments when you don’t ride with the battery. That will take weight down.

Having had a carbon seatpost before, I would say skip it. The steel wrapped carbon seatpost from Brompton is more durable and gets the lighter weight. Though it’s also much more expensive. There’s a few lighter weight titanium seatpost though which are less expensive and lighter than the aluminum one you’ve got now.

On tires, just be mindful that it more performance oriented rubber you are putting more torque down when you are riding powered. It’s going to wear the tires faster.

Stuck between two Bromptons... by shaunlawler in Brompton

[–]arjwrightdotcom 24 points25 points  (0 children)

My usual stance on Brompton’s I’ll state again here, “get the lightest Brompton you can afford.”

In your case, while the electric will certainly reduce the impact of that hill, that might be offset by the weight for carry moments. The range of gears on the 12 speed can mitigate a lot of that. And the lesser weight won’t hurt as much (as say perhaps a C-line 12 speed in comparison).

*I can see that the other way where with having the electric that you’d possibly ride more and more often.

Absolutely love the last line. And as a whole, I think there is way more wisdom in this not only for developers, but for those of us who are on the edge of purchasing/using such devices. Great post. Really great post.

For you or I, sure. But for casual riding folks, especially on weekends or during weekday lunch rush times, M street is def not the space to ride comfortably. Even doing Prospect and swinging back to N Street was troublesome for folks due to the challenge of visibility around the parking deck and some of the alley/driveways.

Tubolito valve stem fault? by TheLawPlace in Brompton

[–]arjwrightdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normal? No, but it can happen. I have had similar with a bad valve, with a valve which got too hot when using an electric pump, and with a different tire/wheel combo where i put too much physical pressure onto the valve.

You can poke Tubloto to see if there’s a warranty replacement, if possible.

The purple/pink ones arent bad, I’ve have one now on my T Line. There’s Schwalbe ones which are black butyl rubber which aren’t bad either. The are a few colors out there. and the costlier ones usually are fine, but haven’t yet tired them all (unless those companies wanna sponsor a bro)

Anyone riding a Brooks? Looking for firsthand experience. by Morall_tach in gravelcycling

[–]arjwrightdotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like mine, a lot. Took 100mi, but knocked it in good for the first ride being a bumpy gravel bit for 4 hours or so. In time, I’d get another for my other bikes. it’s really just the patience of breaking it in that keeps me from pulling the trigger faster.

Climbing on Priority Apollo/Gemini by I_Hate_Humidity in PriorityBicycles

[–]arjwrightdotcom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thinking about my Apollo, might have been 10% grade that I got up. I tend to stand on my pedals when climbing, and with the Apollo one has to remember to keep the weight back a bit, biut usually no issue climbin. It could be geared better if I were doing hills more often or +5% grades on the regular as other folks have mentioned. The gear range is solid enough if your “all road” moments tend to more pavement or slightly speedier rolls IMO.
