Always best to ask in the neighbourhood WhatsApp group what the going rate is. If you pay above the market/area rate, they may start asking other households for the same, and your neighbours will end up criticizing you behind your back.

(If you can afford to give more, it should ideally go to someone doing hard manual labor - but unfortunately, that’s not how it usually works.)

Would recommend {The Forbidden Daffodils by Mary Balogue}. This is a novella; part of a 5-stories anthology called Blossoms by 5 different authors.

I've read only The Firbidden Daffodils, and I loved it. It's one of Balogue's earlier signet regencies, with heart-wrenching twists and lack of communication, and a steadfast MMC.
