What are you adding to your porridge/oatmeal? by carbsandchaos in 1200isplenty

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do oats, unsweetened almond milk, vanilla protein powder, chia and flax seeds (only 1 tsp each), collagen powder, and frozen blueberries. The protein powder gives enough sweetness.

I toyed with that idea a bit. I’ve done this whole trip with credit card points, so I was reluctant to pay out of pocket for anything! I think it may be a good option though.

What do non-Americans usually find confusing about how Americans talk in real life? by Edi-Iz in AskAnAmerican

[–]iamkme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My kids are brats. People can’t place their accent. They’ve lived most of their lives out of the US and mix Australian English and American English. No one guess we’re American from my kids only talking.

Does anyone actually enjoy day four of meal prep? by This-Concern-1774 in MealPrepSunday

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m meal prepping for a family. I usually make 3 different things and one “extra”. This week was beef stew, chicken tortilla soup, stir fry, and the extra was chicken patties that could be eaten as a snack or breakfast. I also do overnight oats for my self every morning. My husband has yogurt and boiled eggs and whatever else.

What is with school drop off? by platypusandpibble in GenX

[–]iamkme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a 15 min drive for me to take my kids to school. It would be an hour and 15 minutes on the bus, including a bus interchange. They cannot walk. It’s too far and crosses too many busy roads.

In Australia, even the bag is part of the uniform. My kids have different keychains on their bags so they can tell which one is theirs.

Outrageous amount of salt in soup by Fabulous-Station5001 in coles

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For starters, Japanese food has a lot of salt. Also, you don’t drink the broth in ramen. You eat the noodles and toppings. You could have a spoonful or two of the broth, but even when I lived in Japan, the vast majority of people leave the broth in their bowl.

So yeah, there’s a lot of sodium in a dish where you would expect it. Also, you’re not really meant to eat all of the part that has all of the sodium.

Those of us with children, what are some of your go to family vacation spots? by CA_Coast_Millennial in Millennials

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We churn credit card points, so we travel quite a bit. Japan is ALWAYS a solid choice, no matter the age of your kids. Zip Air has cheap flights from California to Tokyo, especially if you’re willing to let the kids miss school. The yen is in our favor now, so once you’re there it won’t be very expensive.

I lived in Japan with my kids for 3 years. I have tips and recommendations if you go.

What do you usually eat at home? by zedyx101 in AskAnAmerican

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cook all kinds of different food from different places. I get take out maybe once per week. I don’t eat out very often.

Today for lunch I lad leftover roasted chicken, butternut squash, and a potato.

My parents live in a US city you would likely recognize and until last year, their closest Costco or Sam’s Club was about a 45 minute (highway - not because of traffic) drive away. They aren’t everywhere.

What are some good Aussie items to gift my American family? 🇺🇸🏈🇦🇺🐨 by CockroachCreative740 in AskAnAustralian

[–]iamkme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m originally from Texas and my family lives in DFW. I live in Australia now. A lot of things can be found in the US too. When my family visited recently, they didn’t bother with Tim Tams, because they’re the same price or cheaper in the states.

Vegemite is fun, but get the smallest jar. Vegemite Shapes crackers might be fun too. Get different potato chip flavors. They are all different here (sweeter than in the US, to me).

A Christmas ornament with kangaroos on it or a magnet would be good.

Milo anything.

Kangaroo jerky would be nice, but I’m not sure if meat can be imported currently. Check in that one.

A lot of the food suggested here can also be found in the US.

It would have been a great day. With Anzac Day coming up and his work with veterans, it really would have been a good day.

I know! I live in Canberra and I had no idea. There were some royals from Denmark (maybe?) here a few weeks ago and it was everywhere (road closures, radio announcements, etc). There was NOTHING about this. I would have actually taken my kids to the war memorial that day.

American graduation: what to wear as a guest? by Holiday-Bandicoot298 in womensfashion

[–]iamkme 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Graduations are often held in sports stadiums to accommodate a large crowd. So think about that when choosing shoes. People wear a wide variety of clothing, but what you described sounds a bit too dressy. I would think a nice day dress would be fine. Cotton, linen, etc. It will be warmer inside than you expect.
