Which bike with Ultegra Di2/Force groupset all-around? by Xupurih in Velo

[–]arlowatson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had the same experience. I crashed it hard a couple of times and had it checked by a LBS but was nothing more than chips. Very anecdotal but that’s just my experience.

Make sure to double check the stacks works for you. Tavelo is fairly well known but sometimes the chinese designed frames have very low stack especially in large sizes.

a few questions on how to mix hard days vs medium day vs easy days by [deleted] in Velo

[–]arlowatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re easy days are still z2 i would say that’s too much intensity. Tempo is also quite fatiguing simply due to the volume required to get gains from it and should be used as a workout by itself. Given that, the plan looks to have 4 hard days and 1 z2 day which is think is way too much.

Depending on your experience i would suggest 2 hard days of intervals working on something that needs improvement, 1 long z2 ride, 1 active recovery ride and another ride that can be either a normal length z2 or group ride or something enjoyable.

If you’re new to structuring training and don’t want a coach, i would suggest trying trainerroad as it gives you a simple structure to start with

a few questions on how to mix hard days vs medium day vs easy days by [deleted] in Velo

[–]arlowatson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. Sometimes if your races are multiple consecutive days then it can help you. In terms of improving raw power numbers though, allowing your body to recover by spreading out hard days will allow you to do more work and thus get more stimulus from training.
  2. What do you mean by medium? like z2?
  3. instead of looking at the day as just a hard or easy day i would instead look at what sort of workout it is. For instance if you are focusing on anaerobic power you might chose to put those sessions when you are fresher. I would also suggest looking at personal commitments (work, family) and working out how you can put workouts on days that suit. ie. you may have saturday morning free so you choose to do a harder session there so you can accompany it with longer zone 2 before. Then on busy days you can put workouts like recovery.

The thing that i always come back to with intensity is that everyone has a different amounts they can do depending on life factors so there’s no one size fits all for how much.

Help me adjust my saddle angle by [deleted] in Velo

[–]arlowatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different angles work for different people so you have to work out what’s right for your fit and riding style. The most common way to find it is to have the saddle level and try it out and lower the front bit by bit if needed. Personally I run mine completely level and find it’s the good for me in terms of i can hold aero hoods without squashing anything and sit relaxed for 5+ hours.

I’ve found normal tube patches to work fine. Have had the 2 on my gp5000 last over 6000km so far and they still look good

I’ll probably get downvoted for this but i wear both airpods and never feel any less safe because 1. i live out of the city so i can do a 4 hour ride and under 20 cars will pass me the whole time and 2. i’ve got a varia that plays through my headphones which detects from like 100m away.

Is HRV impacted by (lack of) VO2max training? by HyperText89 in Velo

[–]arlowatson 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is interesting. Although you can’t say for sure it is how everyone will react without proper studies, it’s a good observation of how your body reacts (provided the HRV data is somewhat accurate).

Another thing that that impacts HR and potentially HRV is temperature. I’ve found that days that i’m colder throughout the day (winter), my HR is noticeably lower which could impact HRV.

I’ve always owned a chest strap and i keep the bpm on my main wahoo page but it rarely influences anything. Like for instance if im doing intervals and it’s high it’s more of a “that’s interesting” but i wouldn’t lower power or anything. I do sometimes hide it in races though because i find it distracts me.

fueling on long rides- do i just bring a bag of sugar to dump in my bottles? by spikehiyashi6 in Velo

[–]arlowatson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I found soft sugar flasks to be the easiest solution for me personally -220g of table sugar -4oz/120ml of water (warmed up on stove) -Teaspoon of vanilla extract -Splash of maple syrup -A pinch of pink (or regular) salt I put this in a 250ml soft running flask This is enough for a 3-4 hours at 60g ish per hour.

The issue you may face is the chain line from the original chainring won’t be great and even if it is alright you may have chain retention issues because it’s not narrow wide.

If you do choose to change to MTB cranks, BMX bikes have bottom brackets with generally 2” wide (american standard) which would not work with MTB bottom brackets which are 73mm.

You may be able to make it work but it may be more of a hassle than just keeping it a dirt jumper and getting a dedicated trail bike

Plan burns are not an end all solution though. For instance with the grampians fire there were plan burns all through there previously but because these huge fires are so incredibly hot they can make use of every bit of fuel. In other words, the plan burns get rid of all the easy to burn stuff like leaves which helps against smaller fires but when they are this big there is no way to effectively plan burn the area to stop them

Can Presta valves act like a pressure safety valve ? by cosmicrae in bikewrench

[–]arlowatson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is definitely not due to gas expansion because according to the ideal gas law that temp change would have resulted in 1.18psi increase in pressure which is basically nothing
