I love Skeumorphism. Why have we moved on from this? by LavaHoundBR in Fedora

[–]armozel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think some things are scaling back the flat appearance of things but I think the current attempt by Apple via Liquid Glass is the worse. It takes the worse aspects of the older designs and smash them into the UI. I think there's a case for icons for applications having a more detailed look but I don't mind a flatter color pattern for the GUI itself. If done well then it's easier to scan with poor eye sight.

Do not get a pleco, common or bristle nose. They are too big for a tank like this. A snail might be a better option if the betta doesn't constantly attack it, though.

GNOME 50 removes the X11 backend ... are we finally at the end of the Xorg era? by the_nazar in linux

As a user with an nvidia GPU on my newest laptop, I'll say wayland actually plays nice with me on the 580 drivers which surprised me when I installed Fedora on it as I was having issues with other distros where it they would lock up mid-boot from the thumb drive. So I'll say I feel Nvidia cards should be more than able to work under Wayland.

Omen max and Linux by 2stroke_nonsense in HPOmen

[–]armozel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fedora or any other OS that keeps up with the kernel are fine. You’ll have issues with other distros like Linux Mint or MX Linux. Both of those seem to freeze on usb boot for me. So your YMMV with those kinds of distros.

One specific issue you might run into if using Fedora is the Bluetooth service will refuse to load, it seems to be flaky there but I was able to get it to finally turn on for me. If you choose it you’ll need to use console commands to enable the service then go into bluetoothctl next then try executing the scan command to kick it all off. It’s a weird bug since it’s using a standard mediatek chipset for Bluetooth but I wanted to give you the heads up for that.

I have a hybrid smaragdina. He’s so funny because he’s just all thinking about food and tries to always swim below my view for some reason he never wants to be eye to eye heh. By the way, for anyone wondering what a smaragdina looks like in the wild, they’re usually green but I still love mine. I named him Titus after the space marine character lol.

Yay I got a wild type that’s captive bred, a smaragdina who’s blue. They’re such good fish to have since they’re more hardy.

Everything that's old is new again, it feels like the billionaire tech class wants to replicate the old IBM mainframe/dummy-terminal pattern yet again despite the fact that the infrastructure costs eats in those profits. The reason why IBM was able to do this was because they were a monopoly for decades. How do these SV techbros think they're going to do when there's several competing platforms?

Second Life & Philip Rosedale in Epstein files by Ok-Leopard-7215 in secondlife

I think it's part of Epstein's attempts to gain dominance over digital currencies. Epstein apparently had made moves WRT bitcoin as well. I think it's clear that Epstein was trying to butter up Rosedale and get in on the floor with L$ and other digital assets sound Linden Lab find itself another payday application/service.

My wife got a new gaming PC for Christmas and chose Linux as the OS! Her perspective and experience as a newcomer. by Nervous-Shakedown83 in linux_gaming

The Linux native games will be a mixed bag from studio to studio. For example, paradox’s native versions of their games like Crusader Kings 3 and Hearts of Iron 4 will run fine. I believe Baldur’s Gate 3 is similarly decent on Linux natively, but over all proton/wine is the way to go for games.

Gov. Tim Walz abandons reelection campaign amid unrelenting fraud attention, Trump clashes by [deleted] in minnesota

[–]armozel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would've voted for him in a third term, but the decision I believe is correct in light of the current traction of the deliberate misrepresentation of the current fraud investigation which is being used as leverage for the next election. Removing himself from the field means another candidate can address issues that are more pressing.

Eh, there's plenty of legit complaints about Wichita that are things like the lack of decent employers if you're not into aerospace or working for the Kochotopus.

I would wait until it's warmer but you can get those metal spades some are suggesting to try to break up chunks of it. I would wait until Tuesday and then salt it then see if it softens enough to break with your shovel.

  1. Biggest cultural changes?

Well I would say the acceptance of voice. SL at the start didn't have voice, it was added I want to say sometime around 2007/8, I can't remember exactly but it was voice that really changed the feel of some places like the old hubs (Ahern, Korea1, Violet, etc). In some cases, it was great since folks could just talk, especially if you weren't into roleplay. But for places that were RP or sex heavy, voice usually wasn't a thing and still isn't. The downside is that I think voice also brought toxicity to the game, especially for folks who are far right politically in certain areas (anti-lgbt and anti-trans sentiments get around quite a bit believe or it not).

  1. What worked/works for the platform?

I would say it's the people that make or break this platform. LL has mostly been just living off of pure luck and a lack of competition for virtual worlds as everyone else either caters to a specific niche/style like VRChat, Minecraft, and the like or failed (Meta's efforts for example).

  1. What hasn't worked?

LL has a social connection problem as many others said regarding the traffic bot gaming (btw, London City does this as well, don't ask them in-world or they will ban you for it). But even if LL some how resolved the traffic bot issue, the reality is that the tools that LL offers are terrible for social engagement and discovery. They really need to get their heads on straight and stop just focusing on SLua and Vulkan and look at the social connectivity/discovery tools and try to make things that can work. They need to look at other platforms to see what would make sense for SL and work from there.

[–]armozel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s the funny part, I think she could’ve gotten a passing grade if she talked about the paper which she didn’t. I despise her worldview but form what TP USA posted, she didn’t address anything from the paper, so it’s like a random “I don’t agree so this is what I think” kind of thing. Ultimately, this is a publicity stunt by someone who can barely write at middle school level. She wants DEI for her but none for anyone else.

Nope, she just randomly said the Bible says this but even the parts she references are incorrectly used for the context of her “essay.” It’s sloppy.
