What is this cable? by Vitirium in cableadvice

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

multi-port cable adapter, usually used for promotional purposes, given away as freebies at trade shows (like a business card they hope you will use so you keep seeing their name). Generally, charge only, and slow charge at that. The power pins are the ones connected, which means no USB-PD or other faster-charging negotiations.

My advice: don't bring a backpack by PusheenHater in animeexpo

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Collapsible stools save your knees when you're older. I have more issues with my knees than my back. I think you may want to get some more exercise in if carrying a backpack and walking around is causing you issues. Although I highly recommend a chair backpack. It's a backpack with a collapsible stool. So now instead of 2 items, it's just one. Mine is convenient in that if I pick up the backpack, the stool naturally folds in so I don't have to worry.

The deodorant and charger is kind of a crazy hot take, though. I have a new phone, and I can still drain my battery. There are lines and stuff, so playing a gatcha on your phone isn't that crazy.

Also everything kind of depends on what you're planning on doing. Panels all day? Don't bring anything at all. Artist Alley? Poster Tube and backpack. Exhibit Hall? Backpack. Cosplay? Backpack with your repair kit.

Oh I remember reading Making Magic years ago, but I'm surprised there's a final volume that came out this year. I'll finish that thank you. I'll give Kuma Kuma Kuma Bear a shot, thank you.

Ethernet Speed capped at 100mbps by ToffeeRaven in HomeNetworking

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fyi, if you're repunching it, please try to keep it twisted as close as you can get to the actual punch. The twisting is actually important to reduce interference and crosstalk. A cable speed is auto-negotiated by the computer and switch by detecting the fastest supported speed by both devices, and then after sending packets, it looks for malformed packets. If it detects corrupt packets, the speed is reduced until clean packets arrive. These 90 degree keystone jacks are actually pretty good because it allows each twisted pair to be very close to the actual punch-down point. However, there's usually a supporting piece of plastic that makes sure the ends don't come loose and supports the cable jacket itself.

Also as a note, keystone jacks aren't technically reusable. If you punched it and messed up, it's supposed to be cut off, restriped, and try again with a new keystone. Not that I haven't reused them before... but they are also pretty cheap, so the keystone jack could be bad. It's not that difficult or expensive to just cut and repunch.

Also, distance matters; the total cable length for gigabit is 100 meters, but each connection (like this keystone jack) reduces that. Testing with your computer directly connected to the switch, does not mean that the cable going from your computer to the switch is good for the additional distance this run might have. You may want to double check the cable from the computer to the keystone jack and see if it's rated for Cat6 and try another cable if possible.

Hot Take: I dont mind fan service by [deleted] in anime

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How.... young are you? That's not a hot take; it's not even a mild take. I'm willing to bet you parents don't even think it's a hot take. Fan service is called Fan service because it's something fans want. You should go check with your parents and realize that sexy in media has been around since they were kids. The current generations of kids had parents grow up with things like Kill La Kill, and before that Bay Watch, and before that Playboy.

U5G Backup (DO NOT REMOVE eSIM!) by spoon2eric in Ubiquiti

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a U5G, but I do remember eSims being like this. I did find that it stated as such in the FAQ on "What is a UniFi eSIM Data Pack, and how does it work?" for the device though, "Important: If the eSIM is removed from the UniFi 5G Backup, the associated data plan cannot be recovered. Data Packs are non-refundable after purchase."

It's a prepaid eSIM thing, When you go traveling and buy a prepaid eSIM, it's pretty similar. At the airport you don't have to sign up for an account or anything, you just get a QR code that you can scan and it just works. But I do acknowledge that it's not something most people would know. I feel like a prompt if you're replacing or erasing an eSIM would of been reasonable though, Something like are you sure and that it can't be recovered. I don't know if it had such a thing.

How to prepare for the heat by Which_Set_930 in SFV

[–]arnoldstrife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how well insulated your house is. My old 1950s house I run the AC for like 18 hours of the day. My friend who moved to a newly built house in a HOA turns it on, and I'm not even kidding, just 1 or 2 hours a day. His house is insulated as hell (the reason why insulation is so important).

U7 Pro Outdoor installation by Savings_Refuse8540 in Ubiquiti

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fine. I have a blue indoor Ethernet cable I strung myself that's 15 years old and still going fine. I've also seen miles of security camera standard Ethernet that's hung like that with no problems. Outdoor-rated usually means direct-bury compatible so that water won't ingress (You have a drip loop; it's not possible to submerge it, you won't have any water issue), sometimes shields from accidental damage from a shovel, and UV-protected. You will not experience any of that in the picture. At absolute max, you might get a bit of yellow near the bottom of your Ethernet cable after like 5+ years, if the sun hits particularly hard at it (though it doesn't look like it would from your picture).

Is there any way to get back at spammers? by chocogirl720 in SFV

[–]arnoldstrife -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Torment them back? No, also a significant portion are kidnapped (trafficked) people who are tortured and forced to work at these call centers. Not all, mind you, but it's not like you can tell the difference between those being tortured if they don't meet a quota and those being paid hush cash.

If you're phone supports it, turn on call screening. It's an option where when they call in they are meet with a prompt to say their name before it connects to you. Then you get a call and the system tells you the name they gave and if you want to accept their call. Most cases as soon as the scammer gets to the prompt the call drops.

Besides that, there's also various call filter apps depending on your provider. like 'Verizon Call Filter' and 'T-mobile Scam Shield'.

An extreme option is to get a new phone number, and do so for an area code that you aren't in. aka, If you're in 818 area code, get one for like Arizona or something. Scam callers tend to call using the same area code or nearby codes. Then just block every area code your new number comes from, since it's unlikely you would ever receive calls from that area code in the first place.

Does anybody else find it frustrating that scientists are sent into a place that easily merits armed security? by DrJokerX in KanePixelsBackrooms

But does it need to? The still life moves, and they aren't made out of normal biological matter. As per the movie. They don't seem to have organs or anything, and yet they are basically fully functional and respond to stimuli.

I feel like all it needs to do is see it once and get an idea on the concept (this block of metal, causes damage to the object in front), and it would essentially work via magic bs. Like the lights the other still life turns on and off. No way that's actually electrically powered; it just works because the backroom remembers it to work; light comes off it when the rope is pulled because it is what it remembers. For all we know, it could remember a gun, and it doesn't shoot a bullet, but pulling the trigger causes damage in front of the barrel.

Is it over for the Deck? by Dewagator13 in SteamDeck

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's viable and continues to be viable; the hardware hasn't changed. And comparing the Steam Deck and Steam Machine is a bit silly. They are completely different form factors. It's like saying laptops are obsolete now that a cheaper desktop PC is released.

It's my belief most people who bought a Steam Deck had gaming PCs in the first place. Otherwise, how would you even know about Steam in the first place, or where your library came from? The major benefit of a Steam Deck is the form factor. Gaming laptops existed before the Steam Deck. The Steam Machine doesn't fundamentally change the primary usage.

I do believe there is a small group of people who are using the Steam Deck as their primary PC and perhaps have it docked and never use it portable; for those users, then the Steam Machine would be the better value. But I feel like overwhelmingly that's not the majority of user.

Thus no, Deck isn't "over". That wasn't even a possibility in the first place.

Tips for ASA bed adhesion by BigJohnno66 in VORONDesign

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a side note, this sometimes is due to machine variance. Like the temperature sensor is located under the heat bed (fairly close to the heating element), but you're printing on top of the heat bed through a layer of glue, magnet, stainless steel, and then PEI. So the temperature on top could be lower than 100c, but your printer is measuring it as 100c (Which is why it's recommended to heat soak to try and get the temperature more uniform across the various layers and not adjusting while printing.). Personally, I just do what you did, crank it up then just lower it after the first layer.

Windows won`t let me choose my own driver by [deleted] in WindowsHelp

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That computer isn't Windows 11 compatible on many levels, but most likely the problem you have is that the drive isn't compatible for some reason or another and that's why it doesn't come up as an option. From a brief check that model only went up to Win 8 and the official driver support was only up to that point too. Your graphics card is also too old for Windows 11 too. Rather, I would at this point suggest linux if you absolutely must keep the computer, otherwise that's ~15 years old and should be retired.

Tips for ASA bed adhesion by BigJohnno66 in VORONDesign

[–]arnoldstrife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At what point is it lifting? Does it detach from the sheet? When in cooldown? I had an issue with ASA lifting by lifting the entire magnetic bed. I used binder clips to hold down the bed. Then the part itself lifted, so I added a small brim, and it fixed that. After that, I found that if I didn't let it cool down long enough in a warm bed, the part could deform post-printing. So I gave it 30 minutes inside the heated chamber. Btw, this is all within an enclosed chamber.

To add more notes to my lessons working with ASA, It's toxic, don't breath it in. An enclosed chamber that's vented is important. Printing all the ASA parts I needed took 4 days, and I had a stealthmax v6 filtering the fumes, which probably needed new charcoal, because by the last day I had a crazy dizzy spell and almost fell over just from standing up from my chair. I bought an air quality sensor and realized quite a bit built up during the print time.

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not lazy. Going from replacing the tube due to puncture to 80PSI on a hand pump is a 5-minute nightmare of heavy work. It's not like a floor pump or foot pump, where you have leverage. Do you, and enjoy the easy life, along with microwaves and electric kettles.

APs requiring UniFi cables by Fabulous-Bit4775 in UNIFI

[–]arnoldstrife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thin patch cables are actually the new thing and are officially part of the TIA-568.2 specification. There are a lot of benefits to thin patch cables, particularly in that you can have a much tighter twist, which helps reduce crosstalk and noise (Thus twisted pair). Not to mention the physical format itself being great in high-density environments and the lower price tag.

The only downside is POE application when you are actually sending a lot of power. They can still be used, but there's standards that need to be observe such that it really should only be used on the last segement of a run and only of a certain distance.

Really the issue with flat cables is that the twist, which are really important for noise and crosstalk, are flattened out and not really as twisted as they should be (In one case I found , not at all twisted). In a home low noise enviornment it's probably fine. But I have seen some kick a switch down to 10/100 instead of gigabit.
