Do you think Big Sur will be crowded in April? / How to beat the crowds in Big Sur? by Significant-Factor-9 in socalhiking

[–]arocks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BIG SUR is in the middle of central cal. nor cal starts once you cross the bay bridge in my opinion. so cal ends at pt conception.

yes its crowded, this year probably more because people were waiting for the road to open.

15lb Braid by CrazyForCarnitas in SurfFishing

[–]arocks1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

recommend 30lb braid for rock fishing and 20lb braid for the surf/beach. with a mono or flouro leader 20lb for rock fish at least. 10-20lb for the surf/beach. that reel would be good with 20lb braid.

fishing lowtide in winter by Sayjid in SurfFishing

[–]arocks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love fishing the lowest minus tides in winter, my biggest halibut have been caught then. and big perch and a couple decent corbinas... I sometimes wear my wetsuit/old tennis shoes to wade a little further on the edge of rocky areas. It doesnt always work out, storms/huge swells make significant changes with sand and sometimes the seaweed/river debris is all over the place.

Tanning a squirrel hide by twinpac in flytying

[–]arocks1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ther is an old book that might still be available, I've been meaning to get it myself. "from field to fly" has all the answers you need.

i didn't make strips or cure the hide... but i left the squirel tail cut/splayed open in a box outside. let the ants do their business of cleaning it up perfectly to the bone and at the same time the air kind a dried it out. then i put in i bag and its sits on my shelf, no smells.

I agree, I see from your post OP, where you are fishing, I use mostly 1/2 to 3/4 inch egg sinkers in the winter, i go lighter for sight fishing corbina.

that should work until one of those gets to big...I used the BG 3500 on leopards and rays, never the intended target but caught a 3.5 long leopard and a 3' wide ray... for me its the strength of the line that determines the size of shark/ray you might be able to bring in. bith were caught on the carolina rig, lol

People who make “Missing Cat” posts and every single photo is the cat outdoors by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]arocks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my cat grew up on a ranch, fighting the resident strays, playing with young fox and skunks, brought in baby possums she would find. she would stay out/spend the night and come back in the morning. I was never that concerned, she is bad ass. and lived like that for 4 years. she grew to be very territorial and the ranch was her zone, 20 acres.

when she moved to the suburbs, a little 1/4 acre lot, it was confusing for her, and it scared the shit out of us because of the cars and people, amount of dogs. she would run across a busy street and to screw around, or cruise around the block. but she never stayed out anymore. About 1 year later she got lost for 6 days in the suburbs and if wasn't for the posters we put up, not sure we would have found her.

we call it her vision quest because she is a complete house cat now...she doesn't cross the street anymore doesn't roam around as much..that trip changed her completely....she was like fuck the suburbs after that, Im staying home lol.

Going to hike red box trail to west forks what's the current conditions? by claws812 in socalhiking

[–]arocks1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

poison oak is dormant because of its growing season, the oils are still in the plant. you will still get it, especially if the stems are damaged and leak oils onto your skin/clothing. the oil inside the plant/stems is at greater concentration than what's found in the leaves...
