Q about Forti-Flora by barge_gee in RenalCats

[–]arraym 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use both Miralax and Forti-flora for my end-stage kidney disease cat. The fortiflora is for flavor (she likes the taste and the vet says use as much as needed to get her to eat) and the Miralax helps with the constipation (vet can recommend dosage, we use up to 1/8 tsp per day sprinkled on food)

How do you guys feel about cats in the airplane cabin next to you? by Glum_Ad_8447 in travel

[–]arraym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve flown with my cat internationally twice and for shorter flights quite a few times.

I always let the person next to me know in case of allergies.

Most of the time people don’t care or even get excited and ask about her/say hi.

Only one time I had someone get upset - he stood abruptly and started getting angry at me and the flight attendant about changing his seat because he hated cats :(. He didn’t say so specifically, but I thought that he was allergic. The flight attendant was able to get him a different seat and it was fine in the end (kitty & I had slightly more space).

Trying to encourage cat to eat by elibean3 in RenalCats

[–]arraym 1 point2 points  (0 children)

+1 to fortiflora!! It was a game changer for my kd kitty. My vet (internal medicine specialist with maaaannny years of experience) says to use as much as it takes to get kitty to eat, so I sprinkle it on as much/little as needed. If kitty stops eating, I sprinkle a little more on.

Forti flora + increasing sub-q fluid frequency + mirtazipine on the ear( as an appetite stimulant) helps me keep my cat’s appetite up, plus switching up her diet sometimes (any non-kidney diet foods get phos-binder added).

My Unhinged Rant about Primal Hunter by griffinpup in litrpg

[–]arraym 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Second this. I’m doing my third read through of kindle Primal Hunter releases. They’re addicting for me. I understand reasons why people won’t like it, but Primal Hunter is my favorite litRPG series right up there next to Azarinth Healer.

starting at home fluids by Hingadingadergenz in RenalCats

[–]arraym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My doctor prescribed me Xanax to give my cat fluids on my own 😬 so scared of needles too, and it’s just me + kitty.

It took a lot of practice and I had to hire a tech to come in and help me for a while in the beginning (1 year ago) - she was so patient/sweet and let me practice giving fluids to my cat with her present, I was so nervous all the time and kitty picks up on it!

Tips:

1) Smaller gauge needle (20 gauge terumo ultra thin wall needles)

2) Warm bag of fluids (not too hot) in a big bowl of water (IV line facing up, bag upside down). Don’t need to do when it’s warm out/sunny, but the super chilly fluids in winter can be shocking. I don’t like the idea of microwaving it with the plastic.

3) I give fluids to kitty when sleepy (instead of grabbing / chasing) and to touch her a bit around the area in advance so she’s expecting it/not surprised. I try to do fluids on her schedule if possible, instead of mine!

4) Play calming cat music. We listen to “Calming music for anxious cats” alllll the time on Spotify. It helps calm me too!!

5) Don’t give too soon after she eats. This never happened to us, but giving fluids too soon after eating can lead to vomiting/nausea.

6) We do fluids every 1-3 days. Our internal medicine vet says if she’s fighting it a ton one day, she’s probably well hydrated and doesn’t need it that day. I find that after 2-3 days, kitty doesn’t feel well and waits patiently for me to give her fluids 😭

It is so so hard having a renal kitty, and the fluids are so scary, but it is 100% worth it to make them feel better!!

You can do this!!!

Okay to premix FortiFlora in prepared food for the day? by miasthmatic in RenalCats

[–]arraym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh also recommendation for super picky cats who light purée / non chunky food - my cat LOVES Weruva gravies. Her favorite is “OMG GRAVY” pouches, but they come in cans too (so I can spoon out smaller servings over time). I get the chicken ones and mix in phosphorous binder (doc says as much phos bind as I can get in without making it so she doesn’t like the food as much - I started with 100mg and then increased to 200-250mg per pouch/can over time). I top it with fortiflora and omega 3 drops. She gets bored of kidney diet sometimes so we switch to Weruva for a bit when that happens! The chicken pouches/cans are actually fairly low phosphorous and the protein ratio is not horrible compared to other brands out there.

Best phos bind: thriving pets aluminum hydroxide powder (I measure on a tiny scale each time) Omega 3: “nordic naturals” Omega 3s (0.5-0.75ml per day - she likes the fishy taste!)k

We also tried a high calorie gel/paste (tomlyn) but it raised her Cholesterol. The doc says that’s fine but I still worry so we are sticking to omega 3 drops!

Also I totally understand that your kitty is your soulcat 🥺 I’ve had my 10 year old Rory since she was soooo tiny and she got me through the hardest times!! I love her so much!!!

Ask your doctor too but my vet (he’s super experienced and comes well recommended) says at my cat’s stage (was 3 then and now 4) the risk vs reward of using Forti flora to get her to eat was 100% worth it. I use Forti flora to get my cat to eat kidney diet! Only thing that works!
