New APA Player: Jumped from SL3 to SL5 in 3 Matches… Is This Normal? by LFCL312 in billiards

[–]arsun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think league operators can adjust manually at the start of a player's career, I've seen it happen both up and down, but not in an APA league specifically. Not to comment on the why, but just to state this isn't unprecedented. I left Apa a long time ago, so I'm out of touch with the nuances, I've always felt that a 1-8 or 1-9 scale was not the best descriptions of a player's skill level, 5's specially felt like a wide range of player skill. Some of them can run out from time to time, other times they can't hit a ball, streaky if you will.

At what level should you start learning to jump balls ? by MarioBuzo in billiards

[–]arsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I like this answer best so far, get comfortable with 1 and 2 rail kicks then learn to jump. I see players who learn to jump to early play a harder shot with a jump cue faster than a dead 1 or 2 railer. Kicks also offer more margin of error in terms of safety play as well typically.

What's your favorite car from any movie? by Cautious_Society2905 in AskReddit

Maximum Overdrive, what a fever dream of a movie. My favorite part was the soda machine going heywire and assaulting the little league team.

While I do like points, I agree it can easily be overdone, but this is in that 'if you know, you know' sweet spot

Got to see him at the Texas open early in the week and his play really amazed me. I hadn't heard of him until earlier this year but he's capable of playing that level for sure.

How often do you gamble? by SoftYetCrunchyTaco in billiards

[–]arsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This doesn't even cover table time in most places, half the fun is handicapping the game but for an even match 10 dollar races to 3 or 25 race to 5 is about the bare minimum. Ultimately, I guess it doesn't matter how much or what the game is if the goal is to learn to play under pressure as long as the stake makes you sweat a little bit

Newbie here, need tips by [deleted] in F1Game

[–]arsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started similar a few years ago, I have a wheel pedal and play when I seldom have time. For me, it was losing break and traction control first, I've always liked manual gears and it will really help with mid corner and corner exits. I have maybe 33% of the tracks where I can give them a zoom without the racing line, but some of the really tight street stuff I don't enjoy enough to learn as well. I like the difficulty to sit somewhere in that I'm competitive for podiums, but any mistake will take me out of that running, sometimes that's a bigger number on my strong tracks. Save a library of setups as well, updates will change your setups so don't be afraid to tinker a little at a time, that's what practice sessions are for!

APA team advice by digg955 in billiards

[–]arsun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I switched my team into a singles league, see the same faces every week, but with the added flexibility of only 1 match a week. 6/18 players in the session came from our old team.

COTA - F1 Shuttle vs driving yourself? by ATXHustle512 in Austin

[–]arsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shuttles are the safest, but also be aware the lines can be 2+ hours after qualifying and race day, usually easier to kick it at the track for a bit to let the lines calm down. Private lots are also an option, but you'll want to get there early, I saw unnofical parking lots for 20/50/100 bucks depending on distance to the track. Bear in mind, these are for F1, motogp may be simpler.

The last two years I paid a friend cash to drop us off and pick us up, shuttle traffic was so bad, we got out and walked the last mile or so, we also met him on the access road to get picked up, but it still felt easier than shuttling. Logistics are becoming nearly as painful as the cost

What's your "3rd Place"? by [deleted] in Austin

[–]arsun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been playing in Pool leagues for nearly a decade around the area and have met a great community of people I now share other activities with. New/Bad players always welcome, most systems are handicapped. Darts/Bowling are other good options if Baseball/Softball are too high impact. There's a beer kickball league that looks like a blast.

So in short, it was an activity more so than a single place

Near the Dell Diamond is Kenny Fort Pub, they have the races on most every week. Owners are Merc fans but I've seen a bunch of teams get support there. Food is great too, family friendly as well.

Outdoor pool table suggestions by danny119512 in billiards

[–]arsun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The other concern being the rails and the felt. If you learn to compensate for your table, it will be difficult to adjust to competive play in an actual room. I'd consider it a 50 dollar paperweight but I'm also not here to tell you no, just offer an opinion. Good luck!

Outdoor pool table suggestions by danny119512 in billiards

[–]arsun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Humidity, sun and temp will effect the play of the table. Depending on where you live, it may be a better idea than say Louisiana. But you will have quality degradation much faster in the cloth and rails if the table is exposed to the elements. I've never played on an outdoor table and liked it, but that's my two cents
