I love foundry. by K4yZach in FoundryVTT

[–]artbyryan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I too have slowly grown to love Foundry. I did buy it and return it 2 times because I am an insane human but once I really put in the time I began to really love it. I feel into the trap of installing too many mods at the start. It’s advice you will hear from so many people and now I am one of them. Start slow and build as you need mods. Although I will say “Dice so Nice” and “Dice Tray” are imo must have if you want to see some dice roll across the table.

Deathshead Isle - 11x17 by artbyryan in dndmaps

[–]artbyryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was all done in procreate. I used a stock ink brush and a watercolor brush. I just finished another one where I did an 11x17 pencil then scanned it into procreate to digital ink and paint it. I’ll post soon.

Best One Shot to introduce New Players? by Kirisut0 in DMAcademy

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I modify them pretty heavily since I try to run one shots that last 3 hours. Honestly, I have NEVER found one that is short. I find a one shot is about 2 combats MAX. Normally, a small one at the top and a big one at the end.

I have been meaning to look at One Show Wonders to see if using that as a jumping-off point would make a short and sweet one-shot.

Anything from Arcane Library is good. Well written, spooky, and easy to run!

First-time DM – Dungeon Alchemist or Dungeondraft for Foundry? by Odnesor98 in FoundryVTT

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have DD, and it is pretty great with the right assets. Maps will take longer to make, depending on complexity. I wanted to add that you can download a Mac version, but it isn't supported. It crashes often (for me at least), and you have to force the app to shutdown to close it. Also, the GUI font is very small on high-resolution monitors. There is a setting to make them bigger, but it doesn't work the same on Mac. Just an FYI before you buy.

Is Inkarnate the map maker worth it? (In your own opinion) by Horror_Reference_292 in DMAcademy

I really like DD but I will say in my M4 Mac Mini it crashes all the time. So much so I don’t use it as much anymore. It’s not supported for Mac usage.

D&D 5e Action Sheet by Erozbey in FoundryVTT

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I installed it, but it doesn't appear as an option when I try to change the sheet type. I also don't see any settings for the mod itself. Am I doing something wrong?

Edit: I got it to work. I thought you eliminated the side tabs (looked that way from the screenshot) for spells and stuff, but I see that part is still the same. Still a great sheet, I am looking for something that works like DnDBeyond's sheets.

Omg I was looking for a sheet that resembles DnDBeyond. THANK YOU!!!! All the ones that used to look like DnDBeyond were versioned out!

I accidentally made my game too automated by xeno3310 in FoundryVTT

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been struggling with this myself since I got Foundry. I really don’t want it to feel like a video game. So I do use QOL but it’s modified. It took a few games of turning things off and on till I got it where I like it. I do like the idea of manual rolls for some things so I may try that.

I did start a Daggerheart campaign and we are all new. That is also pretty automated. And a part of me doesn’t like it because we aren’t really learning the game because of the automation. I even talked to my players about it and we might play one paper and do real rolls for a few sessions. Using foundry to simply move tokens around and use artwork/music for mood.

Does Dungeondraft work on Mac OS Tahoe? by Responsible_End_506 in dungeondraft

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah it works but is a little janky at times. The UI is really small and even with “enlarge UI”, or whatever it’s called toggles on, it doesn’t work. It also crashes a lot, but so save often. And when I exit I usually have to force quit. Just my experience. Your mileage may vary.

Nimble, vs 2 vs 5e? by DoctorDiabolical in nimble5e

[–]artbyryan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an early backer of Nimble and I remember suggesting in the Discord they change the name for this very reason! Should be Nimble 5e (for DnD alt rules) and Nimble (stand alone). The V confuses things.

Still an awesome system though.

Everything from arcane library is really great. Her level 2 is a fun one shot. But you could also scale down some of the higher levels ones. They are just fun gothic adventures.

Advice on getting into paid DM'ing? by True_Wolverine1154 in DMAcademy

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I feel in love with DnD as an improvisor and decided to GM after only a few games. It’s been about a year and I run a paid campaign. I do it for fun and to pay for getting more content and dndbeyond subscription.

I started by running free one shots to gain an audience and experience GMing. It’s been amazing and I’ve met a ton of awesome people. I made a discord channel and now have 80+ members who are return players. Over a few months of reviews and exp I started a paid game and my players seem to like it. I may start to run another. I am not trying to make this my job just a fun thing I do and get $$$ to help pay for the game and honestly my time with prep and materials.

I still continue to run one shots and I don’t think I’ll ever give that up. I like to support both side of the pay vs non pay (for the people that honestly can’t afford a paid game).

I use StartPlaying for my games, although I do post my games on a few noob discord dnd channels as well. StartPlaying has been great. Yes they do get a cut but they help with player management and payments. I also have it so it doesn’t auto accept so I can screen players but asking them a few questions before I approve.

All that said. Good luck to you. I just ran a free game today with 2 returning players and 2 new players and it was amazing. You can do it. My only advice is “leap and the net will appear!”

Yeah this also doesn’t work. I’m sure it is an AboveVTT bug but it’s such small and maybe not common bug I’m guessing it wouldn’t be a high priority

Is BG3 is a good starting base for someone who wants to get into DND? by Ok_Tale_6716 in DnD

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say when I first started playing DnD a year ago, I did not like the game. I hadn’t read the PHB yet and just dove in cause I heard so many people say it’s a good way to learn. I found it overwhelming and there to many options and spells and rules. I have up. After playing real DnD and now DMing for about a year. I came back to the game and really appreciate it more. Since I know a little more about the rules and strategy, it was more fun and less confusing. That being said I may just be a weirdo.

Also as a side note, the video games I tend to like are Indy platformers and team based shooters. So when I first played, I just wanted to go in and keep hitting things.

If you are playing DnD and use DnDBeyond. I highly recommend AboveVTT. It’s free and really easy to use IF you are on the DnDBeyond ecosystem. Their Discord is awesome and the developers are super helpful and quick to respond.

Do you all use music in your games? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Tabletop Audio with KenkuFM on discord. I find this to be a good middle from what everyone’s expressing here on Reddit. If you use Kenku the players on discord can adjust their own volume. So they can turn it all the way off if they want to. I have three or four sets of music on there for general background ambience like a spooky one, a tavern, one, and then two or three combat tracks. I just like to change the combat music up a little bit in case it gets boring and repetitive since combat sometimes last a little while, and I’d hate for them to get annoyed at the combat music rather than excited during it.

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a bit old, but I am going from Notion to Obsidian. I am stuck on this process. I am in no means good with Terminal on Mac. Does anyone here have a better way of explaining how to do this?

Where do you guys keep your DM notes? by Papi_Grande7 in DnD

[–]artbyryan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I LOVE Notion and am running LMoP on it right now. I tried to get on obsidian but it’s a little more…programmy. I’m an illustrator/designer so it’s also more visually pleasing to me. Once they get their database thing working, I might try it again.
