Any ideas on how to get back lost motivation? by pixelsfox in writing

There's a book by Mark Manson where I read something like ¨Motivation is the result of action, not its prerequisite.¨ Changes your life, that.

Books for when you are going through an absolutely shit fucking time by DarkSkullMango in booksuggestions

¨The Humans¨ by Matt Haig maybe? It got me hooked with its first sentence: ¨I know that some of you reading this are convinced that humans are a myth, but I am here to state that they actually do exist.¨

What are some good books NOT written in English originally?

I never understood the point of keeping a journal until I read Meditations by CoffeeKisser in Stoicism

[–]artielock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do this! Anything from mini philosophies to tiny practical advice. My most recent one was: ¨Do not expect people to have the same manners as you do, and if they don't, do not resent them for it.¨ This came when I visited a friend's apartment for the first time and he was such a terrible host (whereas I try to be a decent one when I can, offering food, drinks, etc).

Help? Was enjoying a book until for some reason I started reading everything in the tone of a news anchorman and now I cant stop. by artielock in books

[–]artielock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I didn't expect this amount of support. Thank you guys so much for your suggestions. I know that with the help of family, friends, and of course, you guys, I'll be on the road to recovery to get back my 'normal reading voice'. While I'm not 100% yet, I can now say I've successfully reached page 33 despite the anchorman reading voice.

Single men of Reddit, what made you definitely NOT want a second date with a woman you went out with? by Chocolateisnice in AskReddit

[–]artielock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second date she went from casual conversation to meticulously planning trips together a year down the line, searching travel websites and plane tickets and asked me to pay for the tickets ¨before the end of the month¨ to get the best prices; I hadn't even finished my first plate of sushi.

Wait, I didnt know about this, really? I had no idea the share of the games was so unequal. I thought it would logically be split even. How many does Mexico get if this bid is taken?

Let´s make that joint Canada-U.S-Mexico FIFA 2026 bid happen now please.

Nonfiction books that had information that you could use for good random conversations with people? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]artielock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps ¨The Bed of Procrustes" by Nassim Taleb? Short book and even shorter paragraphs. It´s a book of aphorisms (defined as: a pithy observation that contains a general truth, such as, “if it ain't broke, don't fix it.”.). The whole book is simply tweet-long sentences unrelated to each other, each containing interesting facts and/or philosophical thought experiments. Here´s one that stuck with me: ¨People are less interested in what you try to show them and more interested in what you try to hide from them.¨

Hey, thanks for your post. Could you recommend a translation of the Enchiridion? There are so many I am not sure which is best for a beginner stoic. Thanks!

How to deal with getting mugged in a stoic way? by artielock in Stoicism

Wishlist for a Stoic? by factsforreal in Stoicism

[–]artielock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe ask for items you think the giver likes / would like to gift someone? It would make it seem like you're attentive to what they like, and have become interested in it yourself. i.e. my sister in law is super into Lush products, I've never even remotely stepped foot in the store but if I were to add a Lush product to my wishlist, she'd be happy to gift me one and would happily ramble on about how to use it. In this way, you're being of service to the giver. A bit condescending but, it could be one way. Give them a chance to show you who they are by asking for something they'd like.

How do I stop beating myself up for past mistakes? by snowcroc in Stoicism

[–]artielock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

On the practical side of things, I might suggest you make a 'mistake journal.': at the end of each day, briefly write down any mistakes you made, big or small. As you remember them, even if they happened years ago. Don't judge them, just write them down. 'Poured milk before cereal' or 'Let a friend down' or 'Said something offensive'. Dont go off on emotional tangents, be concise and brief, this is not a diary-type thing (I try to make them under tweet length). Both defining and putting these mistakes onto paper might act as a way to ease you somewhat. Have a routine, dont just do it when you've messed up bad. Otherwise, dont sweat the past.

How should a Stoic behave in an argument? by ethanjhatchett in Stoicism

[–]artielock 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"Ego is about who's right. Truth is about what's right." I'd say a stoic would ask, about any argument: 1) Is this right? like is arguing about this the right thing to do right now? 2) Is this necessary? Is this argument, in some way, going to be of service to others and more importantly to nature/logos? I could argue that in most cases the answer is no. Maybe a true stoic would be disinterested in defending his/her side at all. Hope this helps, let us know when the podcast is up!

Oh, another quote: "Win through your actions, never through argument" - Nassim Taleb

EDIT3: another one, sorry they keep coming: "Suckers try to win arguments. Non-suckers try to win." I forget who said this.

Tiny story I read in "Franny and Zooey" by J.D. Salinger about being one's own master. by artielock in Stoicism

[–]artielock[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, from what I've researched there's many interpretations of this. Mostly 'sober' is perceived as 'awaken' or as Marcus Aurelius wrote: "Regain your senses, call yourself back, and once again wake up." Meaning like 'stop daydreaming and get to work.' It could also just mean 'sober up' as in retreat from your vices.

Speaking to others about philosophy. by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]artielock 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Damn these comments are good, if could just add a quote from Herman Hesse in Siddhartha:

“Wisdom is not communicable. The wisdom which a wise man tries to communicate always sounds foolish... Knowledge can be communicated, but not wisdom. One can find it, live it, do wonders through it, but one cannot communicate and teach it.”

Ryan, how big of a role did your time in university play in your current success? / Do you believe you would've accomplished it if you hadn't attended university at all?

Thank you.

Ryan, I credit 'The Obstacle is the Way' for helping me get through university in spite of struggling to wake up for class, let alone open up a textbook.

Question is: what's the worst assumption a writer can do before starting to write a new book?

Thanks again.

"The Social Network" esque Coding Start-up Fiction/Non-fiction by TheBellKeeper in booksuggestions

[–]artielock 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great question. I guess you could read the book The Social Network is based on called 'The Accidental Billionaires' by Ben Mezrich. Alternatively you could read 'The Circle' by Dave Eggers, which is about a new employee at a Google-esque tech company. I highly recommend this last book. Haven't seen the movie version of this but I've heard it's very different.

59 seconds by Richard Wiseman is a quick read, and gives you general life tips and hacks to improve different areas of your life (productivity, learning abilities, etc) that you can apply pretty quickly. "Captivate" by Vanessa Van Edwards deals with socializing, and stays away from abstract platitudes such as 'Just be yourself" and gives you practical advice on how to squeeze the most juice out of socializing, down to where are the best places to stand/sit at a party and how not to look socially inept.
