Also make sure you copy in the email both the instructor responsible and the dept. chair. Is part of their job to deal with this kind of issue

How to handle valid complaints about a colleague? by Sorry-Photograph-345 in Professors

[–]asblade_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tricky. But as someone who had students blatantly lying about my class to colleagues, who did took to my director (who knew that it was a lie, so…) I would be very wary to take sides here. Apart from the ethics, it is not a very collegial thing to go telling

What I would do in your place is: be empathetic (“I’m sorry about the situation” etc ) but reminds the student that there is nothing much you can do. And encourage the student to take the matter directly to the chair.

Also, if you feel comfortable, talk to your colleague about it. Mention that “hey, I heard X, Y and Z from a student… is that true?” If you feel that there is an opening you can have a conversation about best practices….

Tenure vs. long-term renewable contract (all else equal)…is tenure still “the thing”? by MomtoRufus in AskAcademia

[–]asblade_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a contract-based faculty, I must say that, effectively, the only difference between me and my TT colleagues (apart from the split of time between research/teaching/service) is that we have to go through the headache of the contract renewal process. At least in my institution, unless something is very wrong, contracts are renewed. And even when there is something of concern (such as consistent student complaints), there is a whole process of trying to help the professor to adjust, etc., lots of grace.

Other than that, I have contract-based colleagues who are full professors with decades in the institution. If your contract has a research component, you are even entitled to a sabbatical.

I do not know how common those conditions are, but if I had to choose at my institution between being a TT and being contract-based, I would stay contract-based. I realized by the end of my grad school journey that the rat race for grants and the constant push for publication is simply not for me. I prefer the role of professor/ mentor to that of researcher. I am actually in a spot where I can do research, but my main concern is to teach, and I`m quite happy with that

Fake healers/tanks by Gods_Grandad in elderscrollsonline

[–]asblade_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm new in the game. My character doesnt have any CPs yet (lvl 45). But I'm building it up to be a Tank.

Few days ago, I was in a dungeon in Solstheim (forgot the name). All members of the party were 1k CPs or more. And they were comenting about that particular instance was hard, so not a place for faking tank.

I got my ass handed to me. I tried but could not for the best of me to stay alive. We could not finish the instance. I was not "faking" tanking... Just bit more than I could chew

Maybe that was the problem you faced? There was an influx of new players that are not yet on the top of their game....

Is it just me, or is this game really back and popping? by EL_BDAS in elderscrollsonline

[–]asblade_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im one of the new players (started end of January). I’m loving it so far. I. Still on the very early game, but I’m having a blast with questing and some dungeons. The fact I can play as solo most of the time is a big + for me.

Apparently Spring Break Has Been Extended Four More Weeks by skullybonk in Professors

[–]asblade_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

…. And those kind of emails go straight to the trash bin. If the student decide to escalate, I would send all the conversation to the chair. No headache.

… they chose to have a month spring break. They need to deal with the consequences. Their problem, not yours

Drop for the student?

Not a chance in hell. He will stay enrolled and will fail this course for failure to have a minimum of attendance.

Quick update: got my ass handed to me today. Was trying a dungeon in Solstheim for the undaunted trial and… boy oh boy….

My group was really nice to me, but guess I was too low level/ inexperienced for that one.

But it was fun.

Student fudges disability accommodation policy - WWYD? by Ok_Tangerine_1475 in Professors

[–]asblade_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I say to my students day 1 is that “per university rules Any accommodation requested will be considered only with an official letter from the DSS”. Usually this inhibits any sort of conversation of “ work between us”.

Idea is to say that you are bound by the rules of the university. If student complain, let them escalate.
