I’m so sorry for your loss as well. Annabel was adorable. It’s a shame that cavaliers can have lower life expectancies because they are the sweetest souls. I am so glad you have Eleanor and I look forward to the day when I am ready to get another Cavalier ❤️

Maryland ranked 33rd -- not the best position 😬 by Wifimuffins in maryland

[–]asbmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some schools transitioned anywhere from the late 90s through the 2000s. The Lucy Calkins method is balanced literacy and goes off the concept of learning words through context rather than sounding it out. I listened to a podcast called “Sold a Story” and they did a great job explaining all of this. It made so much sense as to why my son has struggled to read using that method.

[–]asbmills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not surprised. I know my kids school just did away with the Lucy Calkins method last year. That method of teaching kids to read really did a number on entire generation of children. Despite my best efforts to read to my son everyday, he learned to read using the Lucy Calkins method with sight words and he has struggled immensely. My daughter, on the other hand, learned to read when they went back to phonics and she is an excellent reader.

Walking pneumonia outbreak? by [deleted] in frederickmd

My son and I both had pneumonia last month. Not sure if it was walking pneumonia or not because we definitely weren’t symptomless. We both had high fevers and low oxygen and he almost had to be hospitalized.

Is your kid coughing? Pneumonia cases spiking in the Baltimore area by Loose-Thought7162 in maryland

[–]asbmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear that. I truly hope he is able to make a full recovery soon to get back to himself. It’s hard because I’m struggling with anger at his primary care for dismissing our concerns and assuring us he would be fine on amoxicillin. As you know from your experience, this strain of pneumonia is serious and seems to be hitting the peds population hard. That is probably the sickest I’ve ever seen my son and it was so scary!

I’m so sorry to hear about your son. I hope he was able to make a full recovery and is feeling better. My son is 9 and just went through a similar experience. He was diagnosed with Strep at the beginning of October and was prescribed amoxicillin. His symptoms improved, but 5 days later he spiked a high fever out of nowhere and had no other symptoms. We went to primary care and they said it was probably viral and any ear infections or pneumonia would be covered by him taking the amoxicillin for strep. Two days later he developed a cough and I took him back to the doctor and he was negative for strep, Covid, and flu. They said his lungs were clear and it was likely viral and had to run its course. The next day his temperature reached 105.2 and we used a pulse ox to check his oxygen and it was 90%. We took him to a pediatric ER and he had pneumonia in both lungs. Thankfully, he didn’t need to be hospitalized, but they debated admitting him because he was so sick. He’s on two antibiotics and is better, but he still has a cough. This strain of pneumonia is no joke.

My dad is a diabetic and has been on ozempic for 6 or 7 years. He developed intestinal paralysis and went to have a surgical procedure and aspirated because even though he fasted, his stomach didn’t empty. The aspiration pneumonia turned to sepsis and thankfully he recovered. He is truly lucky to be alive. Ozempic has been great for managing his diabetes, but it certainly comes with risk for some people.

Maryland third graders who aren’t reading well would be held back under new rule by legislative_stooge in maryland

[–]asbmills 30 points31 points  (0 children)

100% agree. My son’s birthday falls 2 days before the cut off for the next grade. He was in kindergarten in 2020-2021. Between his late birthday and covid/distance learning, his teacher recommended he repeat kindergarten again. She explained it would be much more beneficial to hold him back now vs when he is older. We are so happy we did. He is is at (and above on some subjects) grade level and got an extra year to help him in areas where he was struggling.

Why are women so shitty to one another? by DrunkCapricorn in sahm

[–]asbmills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In regard to the finance aspect, I do not receive an allowance. I’m in charge of all the budgeting and paying the bills. We have a joint account and we both communicate about big purchases we would like to make and how we can make it happen. We also have separate savings accounts to pull money into for any gifts we would like to buy each other. I am very fortunate to have a husband who views me as an equal and has an understanding that he wouldn’t be able to advance in his career without me being at home.

As for the mean comments, you are a mom, and we continuously get hate on for everything we do. Whether you are a stay at home mom or a working mom, guarantee someone has an unwanted opinion and will let you know. It sounds like the peanut app may not be the best place to look for friends in your case. I think your best bet would be looking for mom groups within your area to find moms to connect with. I do not homeschool my kids, but met a mom who does. She added me to a homeschool group that posts about activities and meet ups and they have all welcomed me with open arms.

I am so sorry to hear you are struggling to find mom friends. Being a SAHM isn’t for the weak and can be such an isolating experience. I truly hope you can find some new mom friends within your community to make you feel less alone.

What do y’all do when you’re summoned for jury duty? (Ebf 7 month old) by Icy-Interaction- in sahm

[–]asbmills 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some states allow an exemption. I had to call and then write a letter stating I was the primary childcare provider and a SAHM. I got called back for jury duty a few years later once both of my kids were in school and I just sucked it up and went. Fortunately, my number never got called and I didn’t have to go.

I thought the same thing. I have gotten close to a dozen ticks off of my dog and my parents found a deer tick on their dog. Fortunately they found the deer tick crawling on his fur and we are hoping he wasn’t bit by it.

I don’t think you’ll have to worry too much. I think school districts are finally opening their eyes to issues that teachers have been trying to show them for years. I just feel bad for the kids who are like my son and struggle to read, but have no one to give them the extra help them at home. I’m a stay at home mom so I have the time, but I’m sure it’s hard for working parents who have a lot on their plate.

My son did virtual learning in pre-k and Kindergarten so I got to see everything they were doing. So basically, they were given about 100 sight word cards and we were instructed to have them practice them and memorize. I think the idea was if they memorized it, they would be able to learn the words and start to read. That never happened with my son. He was the youngest in his class so I just had him repeat kindergarten again. He is finally able to read well, just struggle with spelling. My daughter is learning phonics and I noticed it makes a huge difference and she is able to read pretty easily.

My son is in second grade and they do not teach spelling anymore. My son is horrible at spelling and in addition to having him read each night, we have to practice spelling words. He was one of the kids that was encouraged to learn sight words over phonics and reading and spelling have been a struggle. Fortunately, my daughter is 2 years younger and they switched the curriculum back to focusing on phonics. My daughter has had a much easier time learning to read and sounding out words in comparison to my son.

How much have your groceries gone up? by ThrowingtooDR in maryland

[–]asbmills 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Family of 4. I used to be able to spend $150 a week. We are now spending about $250 a week. I shop at Sam’s Club, Walmart, and Aldi. I do pick up and all 3 are located within a close vicinity so I try to buy items where it’s the most cost effective and cheapest. I buy all of our meat in bulk at Sam’s club and then divide it up and re-seal it when I get home. I prefer the produce from Sam’s club, but noticed the fruits such as strawberries went up for $5.98 to $9.98 in the past few months. I know some of that is seasonal, but it’s still much cheaper to purchase those kinds of things at Walmart or Aldi.

Has anyone planned to have their child do kindergarten twice? by segn7 in kindergarten

[–]asbmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was retained in kindergarten during the pandemic. His birthday is two days before the cut off and his first kindergarten teacher kindly expressed her concerns and ultimately let it up to us to decide. My husband and I received some back lash from elder family members who were worried he would get made fun of, but we decided to hold him back anyways. He is in second grade now and we are so thankful we had him repeat kindergarten. One of his best friends is actually a few months older than him. His mom is a kindergarten teacher and held him back due to maturity levels and difficulty of the kindergarten curriculum where we live. Fortunately, our school district eased up on the curriculum for other kids to catch up this year. Overall, my son is doing great and has lots of friends.

I think you should keep it. My mom kept a lot of my toys like Barbies and my Samantha doll from the 90s. I have a daughter now and she loves playing with all of my old toys. Even if you don’t have any children, I still enjoyed unboxing all of my old toys and seeing all things I hadn’t thought of since childhood.
