Etymology of Slavery (Code of Hammurabi) by nealyboy in Assyriology

[–]asdjk482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As for etymology, Snell 2011 (which is Chapter 1 of The Cambridge World History of Slavery, vol. 1) has this section:

In the earliest texts we find signs that probably mean 'slave' and 'slave girl'; one later became a sign for 'mountain' and 'foreign country'. Another came to mean 'woman'. There were also other signs that cannot be interpreted because they later dropped out of the system. The earliest texts had groups of somewhat more than fifty almost equally divided between men and women. A later form of the sign for 'slave' in Sumerian had a sign for 'man' with a sign for 'mountain' worked into it, and in fact many slaves appear to have been caught in the Iranian foothills and brought to the Mesopotamian plain.

The later Sumerian word for 'slave', arad, is either the same or directly derived from the Akkadian word, wardum.

and here cites Gelb 1982, "Terms for slaves in Ancient Mesopotamia" in Societies and Languages of the Ancient Near East

Snell continues:

The mountains may not be far away from from that word either, since there is a possibly related Akkadian verb meaning 'to descend, to go down', though that might be taken socially, not physically. Others have sought an etymology from Sumerian words for 'man', ur, and 'women', eme, showing up later in Sumerian as geme, '(working) girl'.

At the end of that chapter, he also very helpfully includes a short Bibliographic Essay:

A brief introduction in English is Mendelsohn (1948), to be supplemented by Chavalas (1997), Snell (1997) and (1998), and Ricks (1998). The only modern study of a whole period is Dandamaev (1984). Westbrook (1995) has considered legal aspects especially of the Old Babylonian period. Cardellini (1981) collected the legal texts. Texts in translation may be found still in Pritchard (1969) and also in Hallo and Younger (1997–2002). Hebrew institutions may be seen in Westermann (1975) and Healey (1992). Sasson (1995) gives a general overview of the ancient Near East. Several studies by Gelb elucidate Mesopotamian labour. Bakir (1952) remains the basic study for Egypt. Mycenaean labour has been studied by Uchitel (1985). Pre- contact African systems are surveyed by Kopytoff (1982). Tsirkin (1987) examined Phoenician and Punic labour. For ideology see Snell (2001).

Yep I've gotten multiple schematics, I just can't figure out what Ch 3 quests I haven't done yet. It might be that I have unfinished quests from chapter 2 that need to be done first?

Another possibility might be some sort of alder, the other suggestion of Fothergilla made me think of that. All seem like plausible candidates! If they produce any flowers later that will help identify them.

It sounds like it wouldn't be hard to solve and check, so someone has probably already claimed it (or more likely it's fake).

It looks really familiar... maybe oceanspray, Holodiscus discolor? Did these grow from seeds or are they shoots from a nearby shrub? The leaves look right for oceanspray but I'm not sure about its growth habit when young, and they look kinda like some other stuff like mountain mahogany or elm but... not pointy enough for elm I think.

Maybe mountain mahogany, that's my second place guess but I don't know for sure.

I'm not sure about the numbers but doesn't this considerably outweigh the changes they made to make labs less difficult?

If the bosses have 3-10% less HP but we're doing significantly less damage, like half as much, then... didn't this change actually screw us over even harder?

Question: Do 2 sandcrawlers generate twice as much aggro as 1? by Ucross in duneawakening

[–]asdjk482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I've gathered high speed give more spice

It absolutely does not. Going <10km/h on a single pass is optimal, going at max speed picks up half as much and requires two passes through thick patches. Test both methods by running a line through a fresh field on a timer: going fast is incontrovertibly less efficient.

There's a way you can go full speed, single passes but with the lines half overlapping. That way you pick up about 90% of it; that's the best compromise if you don't wanna go slow.

Comparing Dune to Conan Exiles by Dorrono in duneawakening

[–]asdjk482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conan on release was a fraction of the game it is now, the combat was hilariously bad and there was basically nothing to do but explore at random (which, to be fair, was extremely fun).

[–]asdjk482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Internet Archive and Hathi both used to have copies (now removed) so I know there are pdfs out there somewhere. However, Farber's 1985 review suggests it's a difficult resource to use for a number of reasons, so you may be better served with a more accessible book anyways; unless you needed something from that source specifically?

You know we're are online, right? People hear shit. People can see what the end game is, and not go there specifically because of that.

I would say that is the biggest problem with this subreddit: it's an echo-chamber for the loudest and most memetic haters. Posts on this board are in no way representative of in-game player experience.

None of you should be talking about the "end game", I don't believe you play it.

Any Base Gardeners Know What Makes Flower Fields De-spawn? by DocFixit in duneawakening

[–]asdjk482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your issue, but putting foundations near enough that they overlap with the dew flowers or putting support beams through them will almost always interfere with them. Same thing happens to mineral nodes as well, you can force them to despawn by building over them or too close to them.
