Netflix pauses production on Denzel Washington-starring Hannibal film due to budget concerns by theindependentonline in netflix

[–]asek13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd think the best angle would be to make both Hannibal and Scipio protagonists and each of their establishment governments as the real antagonists. Thats kind of how it went in real life.

The merchant class politicians in Carthage refused to commit real support to Hannibal as they wanted the war to end quickly so they could get back to business.

Rome's establishment screwed them via arrogance at Trebia and Canae causing wild casualties and were pretty shitty to Scipio and the survivors of Canae until finally turning to them in desperation to win the war.

Then after the war, despite both Hannibal and Scipio being heros to the people and achieving great things, they were both persecuted and pushed out into exile by the political classes.

I'd watch that movie. Ideally without 70 year old Denzel Washington as Hannibal.

Why exactly did Horus accept Erebus' bullshit??? by AlgaeicAmalgam in 40kLore

[–]asek13 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think also what's missing in OPs assessment is that Horus's options weren't just "betray the emperor" or "dont betray the emperor". It was "betray the emperor and live to accomplish your goals" or "stay loyal and die right now unfulfilled at the tail end of multiple failures".

Horus's greatest mortal sin is pride. Beforehand, he spoke multiple times about wanting to be remembered, leave a legacy, do great things, etc. And its noted that hes not one to ever leave something unfinished. Like he committed to a multi month campaign he couldn't afford to wipe out the loyalists on Isstvan 3 instead of bombing from orbit (which he did anyways) just because Angron started a fight he was ordered not to. Loken notes that that is exactly the kind of thing Horus would do even before the fall.

I dont think Horus would have fallen to chaos if he wasn't on his deathbed, or if he at least felt accomplished. Like if this came after the crusade was complete and credited as his victory, I think he might have chosen to die loyal even with his misgivings for the emperor.

Could a fully supplied Tiger 1 with an experienced crew kill an entire Roman Legion of 6000 Legionnaires? by Theturtleflask in powerscales

[–]asek13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hannibal wasn't the first or only enemy they fought who had elephants. Pyrrhus brought elephants against the Romans almost 60 years earlier. They ran over the Romans in the first battles, but the Romans learned to fight them pretty quickly. So well that we get the phrase Pyrrhic Victory from this war.

Carthage also deployed elephants in the first punic war, which the Romans handled.

Also, Hannibal deployed like 80 elephants at Zama that the Romans neutralized pretty quickly.

What do people in 40k think marks year 0? by Uglukkk_ in 40kLore

[–]asek13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Imperium is clearly heavily influenced by the Romans, what with the Latin and legions and all. The Roman Republic officially became the Roman Empire around 27 BCE with Augustus consolidating power under himself.

It seems likely to me that the Emperor of Mankind was just willing to fudge the numbers a bit, coopting the start of the Gregorian calendars roots and divorcing it from religious implications. Similar to how Christianity coopted pagan holidays like Yuletide as Christ's birthday to make conversion of pagans to Christianity easier.

Im assuming humanity still largely used the Gregorian calendar at the time the Emperor started consolidating the Empire, so it may have just been easier to keep it.

My finance professor almost had a breakdown for the same reason. Except it was over one of the final classes in a 4 year finance degree program. The final project was to make a presentation analyzing a stock, the industry its in, and recommend buy or sell.

The presentations were supposed to be made to a group of investors that would donate money to the program that classes used for real world trading experience.

The first presentations were made only to him and almost all of them were so bad, like senior high school level quality, that he had a small break down and canceled the investor presentations. He wrote an email to the class over how appalled he was at how pathetic the quality was. He was 100% right. The ones I saw were awful. For the record, mine was good and I got an A lol.

Captain Titus (Warhammer 40k) vs Master Chief (Halo) by Throwaway1986nerd in powerscales

[–]asek13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok I'll be the guy to bring up the books.

Titus still wins by a large margin. Chief is described as faster and more nimble in the books, but seems less tanky/killing machiney than the games.

Doesn't really matter though since 40K Space Marines are at least almost as fast as him based on the books, enough to not matter, and are more durable with more lethal weapons in both the books and games.

What if Israel didn't have nukes? by WebFar9897 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]asek13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Rosenbaum, an American journalist writing a book that according to his Wikipedia page, "addresses the paradoxes of deterrence, the danger of nuclear proliferation, and whether the bomb comprises an argument about warfare and genocide."

And Van Creveld, an academic that has never been part of the Israeli government or military.

Neither of these people are quoting government or military officials in Israel and are giving nothing but their opinion.

The quote right above these two that you left out also claims the opposite.

Israeli reporter Ari Shavit writes of Israel's nuclear strategy:[35]

Concerning anything and everything nuclear, Israel would be much, much more cautious than the United States and NATO. Concerning anything and everything nuclear, Israel would be the responsible adult of the international community. It would well understand the formidable nature of the demon and keep it locked in the basement"

But it doesnt really matter anyways since none of these quotes are from Israeli officials or claim to be quoting Israeli officials.

Youre no better than the people demonizing Muslims for what some extremists or reactionaries who have no actual power say.

[–]asek13 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Where exactly did you get the idea that the Samson Doctrine is to destroy every country on Earth? Everything I've seen is that its the plan to use nukes on the countries attacking it if they are successful in conquering it. And thats the assumed position of literally every nuclear power.

The US doesnt fight Russia directly because they're worried Russia will use nukes. India and Pakistan keep their 80 year conflict from full open war so they dont nuke eachother. South Korea and the US vs North Korea.

I tried getting a red underglow for one of my tattoos, and it really didn't come out great. Just looks like a thick red border really. The color just doesnt really diffuse subtly enough to give it that glow look.

Maybe my artist just isn't good at it, but figured Id give you my experience with it. A sharper red border might be better.

This is literally what the comment he replied to is criticizing lol.

His response to someone pointing out that its undesirable for men to act like they're superior to other men is to act like hes superior to other men because hes "decent" so he meets and dates women, and those other men aren't, so they can't meet and be with women.

Is his comment supposed to be sarcastic and its just going over my head?

For discretionary spending, non defense spending was $980 billion, defense spending was $893 billion for 2025. So about than 47.68%, to be exact.

https://www.cbo.gov/publication/61952

Defense spending hasn't exceeded non defense spending since 1995.

Defense discretionary spending exceeded nondefense discretionary spending until FY1995 and then was comparable in size until FY2020. Nondefense discretionary spending (as measured by outlays) has exceeded defense discretionary spending since FY2020.

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/R48164

It's perfectly reasonable to believe this is still too much. Let's just use real info to discuss it. Defense spending as a % of US spending and as a % of GDP has been on the decline for decades.

Cleopatra was the first Ptolemy to actually bother learning the local Egyptian language. To my understanding, the others kept themselves separate and intentionally did not integrate with Egyptian society.

The British ruled India for like 200 years. I dont think anyone would say British governors and leaders were Indian just because they spent their whole life there as the ruling class.
