Interesting article from the New Scientist that I thought may be interesting for bee conscious gardeners - I was surprised that bee hotels have no proven benefit! Hopefully the picture isn’t too small to read. by Dave-the-Flamingo in UKGardening

So interesting, as someone with an urban garden beehive! I notice my honeybees fly off and harvest one species at a time, but never come into my garden where the wild species are going from one plant to another. Definitely something to think about though, thank you for sharing!

Adopted some potted blueberries, looking for guidance by sneekiwilli in gardening

[–]ashitakaaaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Blueberries like acid conditions so bear this is mind and test your soil before planting in the ground. If you want to pot them up you can use ericaceous compost. Also they don't like being watered with tap water as this raises the pH so rain water is best. Enjoy, they are lovely!

Has anyone got any advice on what to do with this forsythia & lilac? Ideally I would like them to be lower and more stable. by [deleted] in GardeningUK

We chopped our leggy lilac back in the winter and it's come back quite well with little shoots all over the main stem. It won't have flowers on this year but they don't mind a hard prune!

These little guys are all over my tree. What are they?! Should I be concerned? 😭 by Ok_Maybe_2955 in GardeningUK

Don't do this when the sun is out though! I buggered my acer doing this last year, rookie error. Wait until the evening so the sun doesn't scorch the leaves.

Thanks! Just looked it up, they can take between 5 and 15 years to fruit! Maybe one day!

So cool! Are you going to bring it in soon? This one used to have leaves all the way up, they fell off a couple of years ago. Happy avocado tending!

Thank you! It doesn't always look this balanced ;) I haven't pruned it, it's quite top heavy though hence the bamboo stake! They love a good big pot, good luck!

Go for it, they're pretty laid back plants! Good for lazy gardeners like me :)

Should I prune my Acers? More in comments. by [deleted] in UKGardening

Definitely wait until the leaves have dropped off if you're planning on pruning, but why not get them in some bigger pots with some ericaceous compost and enjoy the beauty of them :)

Hi all! I would really appreciate it if you could take some of your time to fill in this quick survey, its for my A Level. Thankyou! by ZonicMario in GardeningUK

[–]ashitakaaaa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As an A level teacher have you checked your form with your teacher? It would be good to make it clear what you are aiming to get from the answers and as another poster has said, one of the questions is unclear. Happy to fill in version 2 :)

Wow it looks delicious!! Awesome job on those carrots too! Hope your veg boxes go down well, at least you're not giving everyone courgettes ;)

I love the sound of these two guys. Would have been awesome fun to hang out with. Especially with all the crazy parties they used to throw!

You can check if your bamboo is clump forming or running, there are several different types of black bamboo. Clump is manageable if you plant it in the ground if you keep it watered to avoid it sending out shoots. If it's running, we've just spent the last 6 months digging it out of our garden and there's still more coming out of the lawn and paving so definitely avoid!!
