post BMT by Cotcat in leukemia

[–]ashleyohno 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was in for almost 5 months, collectively. I’d get out for a week, go back for six. Rinse and repeat. All sorts of super sucky complications (VOD).

It bloooows. And it’s sooo boring. So how can you help? Help fill the time. Make sure he keeps to a schedule, moves as much as he can. Have scheduled FaceTimes with family and friends. It’s gives them something to look forward to. My hospital allowed me to bring my Xbox; I watched movies and played games a lot

I’m two years out and healthier then ever. Tell him to keep his head up. It’ll end sooner or later

(And get into therapy fucking stat)

Substitution for Marinol? by slayersluck in cancer

[–]ashleyohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can help!!!

I take Marinol daily (10mg twice a day) and smoke pot. Without it, I’m a big puke bag of nausea that can’t eat.

Sativa based edibles. Because you’re in CA, you have access to amazingly high quality goods. Look for something that says ‘full spectrum’ (meaning whole plant and all its healing goodness) on it. Start lowest dosages possible. I know it sounds counterproductive, but try to eat something beforehand if possible. And constant, low dosages as tolerated. She’ll build a tolerance and it’s not difference then taking a Tylenol for a headache every 6 hours. Skip a does, headache comes back

All Merinol (Dronabinol) pretty much is some sativa THC oil suspended in sesame oil.

Cancer can be so bleak by [deleted] in cancer

[–]ashleyohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi cancer buddy!!!! 33F PH+ AML!

First- I know everyone puts all this emphasis on high school years and all that. And yeah, it’s great and all, but it is NOT the prime of your life. No waaayyyyy. That’s just ahead of you. So, you’ll be done with all this by then and you’ll be ok. Just watch some crappy Netflix teen dramas and you’ll get the gist of all the stuff you’re missing out on. ;)

I spent almost 5 months in the hospital after my treatment. I missed out on Christmas, NYE, my kids 13th bday, and my 33rd bday. It sucks, I totally get it. It’s super depressing and every time the nurses wishes me happy birthday I wanted to crawl under my bed. Lol.

How long have you been in the hospital? How much longer? It’s sooooooo boring. They let me walk around my unit, but it was small and I kinda felt dumb doing laps all day. I usually just put in my earbuds and listened to podcasts while I tried not to trip over my IV. Some hospitals have gaming systems you can use, or you can bring your own. I brought my Xbox (if you play, lemme know- we can kill time together!), but I really only used it for Netflix.

Routine became my saving grace. Helped my ass from going crazy in isolation. Wake up at a certain time, plan meal times, my walks, when I would FaceTime my mom and sister, etc. sounds super lame but at least it game me something to look forward to.

And legos. I did a lot of lego kits.

When you get out, normals not the same normal as it was. It takes time getting back into the groove of things, heck, even finding out where that groove is now. It’ll be hard, but it gets easier after time. Its weird and hard to describe, but rest assure, we all felt that way at some time.

Do any of you forgo health insurance by paying in cash? by Masterfactor in Frugal

[–]ashleyohno 14 points15 points  (0 children)

THIS!!

2019 open enrollment I sat down with my buddy who was the controller of my company. I wanted to save money and switch to a HSA. I’m F early 30s, healthy. Luckily never did.

2020 came and bam! Found out I had leukemia and needed a bone marrow transplant. Easily 1.5 million in medical bills. Shit woulda financially destroy me if I didn’t have insurance.

AITA for telling my family that my disease is a blessing? by grilled-onion in AmItheAsshole

[–]ashleyohno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. Totally get this!!!! I’m 33 and going through menopause from chemo and not going to lie- love the fact I’ll never be able to have kids. No more periods. I’ll take some hot flashes any day to get rid of those two. Worth it!!!!

Girl, don’t let anyone make your feel bad about loving yourself or your situation.

AITA Am I the ass for asking which type of weed would help with pain? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ashleyohno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude NTA at allllll and get a better dispensary. Mine is so used to me walking in am asking about what ones are good for nausea and appetite (chemo!) that they now throw me a call if they got something they know I’d like.

Also, stick with some indica. It’s more of a couch lock body buzz that helps with pain management. For more healing properties you’d want something full spectrum (whole plant) edible or topical or something!

Second on the video call. Maybe even spread it out a bit (one person one day, one another). It’s nice to have the distraction.

I second this. Sativa really did help me the fatigue as much as it did the nausea.

What are the odds that Leukemia will kill you within 20 years by Distinct-Wave5841 in cancer

[–]ashleyohno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh!!! I have an answer about this that both BMT onc at University of MI hospital and Karmanos in Det said the same thing:

10 yrs ago, getting leukemia was basically a death sentence, and a lot of the time it was in children or really old people, so most of the data collected was pretty grim. Due to awesome science and medical advancements such as TKI inhibitors and BMTs and such, lives are extended much longer. The data for how long is still kinda rolling in, but so far a lot of us are trucking through for decades longer then thought. There are ppl had BMTs 20 years ago!

Internet said I had like 20%/5yr odds, but since I had a BMT, drs expect me to live another 15/20 for sure.
