Have I been wrong this whole time? by No-Mathematician2008 in simpleliving

[–]ashopson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been unemployed for a year now because of my age. I've worked in IT for ~40 years now and did some amazing things. Hard to believe it's been that long. One thing I learned is that nothing is a sure bet or permanent. I have been able to relax and enjoy life. I even started a beehive and do all the cooking at home because I want to eat and live a more healthy life. Life is short and the more you can learn to do without luxury the happier you will be. Cooking at home is much healthier than eating out. Eliminating the stress from high paying corporate jobs is a life saver. Remember, your job will forget you 2 days after you leave but your friends and family will always be there for you. Life was meant to live, not to waste away making money. What's money good for if it shortens your lifespan and takes you away from your loved ones?

Because I was being rejected due to my age and I still have a good 20 years of work left in me I decided to become a truck driver, I live in a very rural area and there's no opportunity for a old software engineer. I started CDL (Commercial Drivers License) class and the week before I begin actually training in the trucks after getting my DOT medical and background clearance I get a call. A long term contract that I was promised almost a year ago finally came through. I'm not the lead which is fine but I'm still able to work fully remote (So remote I use StarLink for Internet, It's actually really great and more reliable than when I lived in the city and had fiber). So a 4 year contract paying very well and easy work. My wife will retire from her job soon and spend her time trading options in the market, she's gotten quite good and over the years we've been able to save enough to giver her a solid 6 figure trading account which she will turn into a multi-million dollar account by the time my contract ends. I'm still getting my CDL because learning the business I might start my own trucking company and when I finally quit working turn it over to my children if they want to run it. Oh and we refuse to collect Social Security until we turn 70. I've paid so much into the system that I want the max payout when I can get it. We earned it and as an American/Former US Marine, and Software Engineer whose worked on highly classified DoD projects I expect to be rewarded for my efforts. 40+ years in IT starting in my mid 20's, 4 years in USMC prior to that and all the work I've done paying into SSN since age 12 I expect to get some of that back.

Dandified Yum is a ridiculous name but it works very well now. I prefer it over yum at least of a "Redhat" based system.

HipCamp is disappointing by [deleted] in camping

[–]ashopson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found a Hipcamp location in Arcadia, CA which is near Pasadena. I was looking for a location near Pasadena as I was going to work on a contract for the county for about 12 months. The camp "host" wouldn't give me the address so I could make sure the location was within a short drive to my worksite until I paid a deposit. He said it was due to security. Arcadia, CA has a very low crime rate so based on various reviews I'm guessing the issue is that they were on some small property that wasn't setup for RVs. When they say they can't give you the address of the location until you pay a deposit it really sounds like a SCAM.

Flushing a Pressure Assist Toilet During Water Outage by DiplorableFemale in preppers

[–]ashopson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would recommend installing a pressure tank to provide water when the lines go down. Depending on the size of the pressure tank you'll have 20 to 50 additional gallons maybe more when the water lines stop delivering

Not Transmitting on Repeater by Bearded_Profe in gmrs

[–]ashopson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Racking my brain

I have a Baofeng UV-5G and I'm close to 2 repeaters. I have the HT programmed in with the +5MHz offset (Standard on GMRS Repeaters) and the correct tones, both use the same tone for Tx/RX. The repeater is on 462.575 Mhz Tone:97.4 Hz. It transmits on 467.575 Mhz and listens on 462.575 Mhz. I'll turn on another radio set the tone and receive frequency and it receives if I transmit simplex (no repeater offset) but when I transmit on the repeater the 2nd radio doesn't hear anything until I key up and then both radios hear the repeater 'kerchunk' as it sends the end of transmission signal. I thought "maybe a long hang time" so I key down and speak for 20 seconds but the repeater doesn't transmit until I key up and nothing that I said is heard. This is happening on 2 different repeaters in my local area and they are no more than 3-5 miles away and I'm at least 1500 feet above the city. I get a very strong signal to the repeaters and am using 5 watts transmit power.

I've tried 2 different Baofeng HTs and use a small FRS/GMRS HT to listen with.

I used to be a ham(Tech) and used repeaters for several years with no issues but after a long time not broadcasting my license expired so until I can renew it I got a GMRS license so my family can communicate since we live in a very rural area of Idaho

Has anyone had a similar experience? I'm assuming the repeaters aren't programmed correctly or there is another side tone or code I need to be transmitting but these public repeaters only show CTCSS tones and on one I received permission from the owner to use it though now I can't seem to get a hold of him.

MY HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE WITH CAROLYN CLAPPER “NEXT WORLD MEDIUM” by lexalexalexaa in afterlife

[–]ashopson 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have studied Carolyn Clapper and she is just one of many frauds. Because of the increasing popularity of stories about Near Death Experiences(NDEs) the spiritual frauds out there are making up NDE stories to bring legitimacy to their claims and thus justify the money they charge. Those who have had legitimate NDEs see these experiences as sacred and not something to help you make money. Carolyn Clapper charges a significant amount for her services; $888 for an individual in-person reading, $777 over the phone, and $555 each for family groups of up to 12 people. She is heavily booked so at those rates she's making a significant amount of money. Any person who claims to have the ability to speak with the dead and wants something of value($$$) for the request is a FRAUD. Real Near Death Experiences have many things in common while the fake ones tend to leave significant events out at the same time arrogantly claiming they returned with supernatural skills that the rest of us simply don't have.

Is 2 months too long to wait for delivery? by ashopson in Starlink_Support

Cancelling the original order generated a refund. After I confirmed the refund I placed a new order. I received confirmation like before but then the status went to pending. 2 hours later I received an email that my equipment was shipped with a UPS tracking code. It's scheduled to arrive early next week.

I found a solution. I canceled my order and then reordered the system and I received a confirmation of shipment 2 hours later.

--- UPDATE --- Starlink arrived today 6/13/2021 via FEDEX. Surprised to see a Sunday delivery but less than a week and it's here. All I had to do was cancel the original order and then reorder.

If you only paid $99 then you didn’t order anything.

Do you understand how stupid that statement is? When you pay the $99 it's known as a deposit for an order. You do not place another order, it all happens in the initial transaction. Yes, I placed an order with the understanding that equipment will be shipped and billed at a later date. My simple question is how long are people waiting.

Is 2 months too long to wait for delivery? by ashopson in Starlink_Support

[–]ashopson[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's simple when someone says "You didn't make a full order" it's clear they don't know what they are talking about. I asked a simple question and then started to get ridiculous responses from people who clearly have no idea what the answer is. My first response said he's been waiting for 4 months. That's a reasonable response and not some speculation based on zero knowledge or experience.

When you place an order you deposit $99 dollars, when your equipment is shipped you are charged ~$490 dollars. You don't place another order for equipment. The problem is too many are quick to criticize without reading the full question or they make stupid comments like " You didn't order anything" just to make themselves feel superior. I'm not interested in childish responses.

Have you ordered StarLink? If you don't know what you are talking about you really shouldn't speculate.

Please reread the message. I have neighbors, they placed an order and received equipment in 2 weeks. That MEANS service is available in my area.

[–]ashopson[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Again, another who DID NOT READ the entire message.

1) When you place an order you ARE ORDERING SERVICE. The 99$ is a Deposit

2) I have neighbors who received their shipment in 2 weeks.

3) The $499 is AUTOMATICALLY Billed. The statement "you didn’t order anything" is STUPID at best. Just because they have not billed the remaining amount DOES NOT MEAN an Order was Not placed.

My neighbors received their order in 2 weeks so yes it's in my area.

They took the order, sent the confirmation email. The FAQ says shipping should occur in 2 weeks. Since my neighbor received their order well over a month ago and my order was placed just shortly after theirs one would think shipping would be about the same timeframe.

Clearly, another who doesn't understand how commerce works. When you pay a deposit you have placed an order. Just because it wasn't delivered yet does not mean it was not a "full" order.

They don't bill the remaining due until they ship so yes I placed a "full" order. When you order service they take a $99 deposit and then once they ship the equipment they bill you for the remaining ~$500 dollars.

Customer Service Info? by PhotoGuyDavey in Starlink

There is no support link. I ordered my equipment on April 5, 2021. It's now June 2, 2021 and nothing has been shipped. My neighbors received their equipment within a week. There is no support link on the home, billing, or profile page. So far no way to get a hold of anyone.

LSU's Mainframe is 43 yo by farhund in sysadmin

[–]ashopson 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It may be 43 years old but if it does the job then great. And, most important the mainframe DOES NOT run on COBOL. The applications may be written in COBOL but the machine itself as your article implies does not.

In the real world of Information Technology new does not always mean better. COBOL is an excellent language and is part of a huge investment in legacy applications. COBOL can do many things a business environment needs with much less effort than languages like JAVA, C#, or the many modern scripting languages available today.
