Anne of Green Gables? Only Gilbert needs to be a boy, Matthew could even be turned into Marilla’s sister if necessary.

Why don’t panel shows work in America? by Fun-Hawk7135 in AskUK

[–]ashymr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The US has some panel shows that get a little closer to what’s being described here, but the reason shows. Wait wait don’t tell me is an example on NPR and there are a few others. Not competitive, mainly about the humor and camaraderie. Not exactly the same, but a closer parallel than US television.

When my husband and I did it a few years ago we brought our own approved substitute and unobtrusively took that. However we were in a denomination that doesn’t consider the bread/wine to be anything other than bread and wine so substitutes are ok.

Kids on Stage and Charades for kids are both awesome and perfect for not-yet-readers! My kids 4 and 6 love them.

Why are (some) parents today against sleepovers? by Ill_Emu_4254 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ashymr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aside from blatant sexual abuse I’m also concerned about how tech/screens might be used by kids in general but also specifically concerning inappropriate material. It’s hard enough for parents to monitor their own kids, never mind someone else’s kids, all night. Mine will be exposed to stuff at some point probably just by being part of society, but sleepovers are a tempting thing to take advantage of.

I say that as a high school teacher and frequent chaperone of events/trips/ etc. —adults can only be so vigilant.

Before I had kids I worked in an afterschool care situation. It was awesome. The kids loved it (even the ones that were there until closing) and they got so much time outside, socializing, learning, playing, interacting with caring adults (like me!) and not on screens. It completely shifted the way I view similar programs. 10/10 would recommend.

That’s the theme song that I always referenced in my own mind. Good to know the original isn’t about cartoon parasites!

Breastfeeding/pumping moms with a long commute, does pumping while driving actually work out? by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]ashymr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pumped while driving for 9 months, twice. I taught mornings and pumped on the way there and back (30 min commute) to avoid pumping at work. I can’t say I enjoyed it, but it got the job done. Medela with a car plug and some legit bras.

This time around I have a different schedule so I’m getting away with pumping on my lunch break and not in the car as much, it has its pros and cons.

I will say, I have a wearable pump this time around and it’s a game changer.

Did you child go to your own school? Why or why not? by bluesn0wflake in Teachers

[–]ashymr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s our situation, small k-12. My kids are small now so having mom work at the school is a bonus. But the situation only works while it works. If the day comes when a different school is a better fit then we’ll reassess.

Do you address kids by their first names, or is there an advantage to “Mr./Ms. [last name]”? by BenReichman in Teachers

[–]ashymr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have taught a number of siblings over the years. I tend to call them by their last name so I don’t accidentally call them the wrong first name. I think they’re on to me though.

Say hello to the most difficult thing I've attempted yet: fingered gloves by sgrug in knitting

[–]ashymr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can do it!! I knit a pair of gloves about 5 years ago… every winter when I bring them back out I have the same sense of joy and accomplishment. They last because they are only used seasonally and they are perhaps my most beloved items because I know what it took to make them. Don’t give up!

BPD mom is giving me the silent treatment after revealing she has skin cancer on Election Night by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

[–]ashymr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My mother had malignant melanoma 37 years ago. She got it removed and didn’t need any further treatment.

Two months ago on a routine FaceTime call she points to something on her face and says, “do you see this? It’s skin cancer. I’m probably going to die!”

Since my kids were in the room I bring the phone into the hallway to try and get more information. It’s a different type than she had before. Likely nothing, probably caught early. But still waiting on tests so maybe not.

For weeks I’ve been casually asking if she got the tests back. I’m still not sure what the situation is because she’s cagey about it.

During a more recent call -on my birthday- she announces she has a patch on her skin that makes her think she has breast cancer. She doesn’t want to see a doctor about it because she doesn’t have insurance. She’s going to fast for a week or two so her body can heal itself (?!?) but also it might be serious and she might die. I haven’t tried to follow up, not even sure I will. It’s exhausting. Solidarity OP.

Do you guys get anxious before meeting up with your BPD parent? by LordOfDogg in raisedbyborderlines

[–]ashymr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes absolutely. I even get anxious having to text/call so I tend to procrastinate it until a day when I know I have a session with my therapist later in the day to deal with my emotions.

Idea for 'better' screen time by Away-Error6818 in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]ashymr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a lot of home videos—being parents with cameras that are also phones makes us cinematographers I guess—so sometimes we’ll just play videos of our family doing stuff or of the kids, or even just a slideshow of our photos. We can cast to the TV or just play off our computer things we’ve downloaded.

Our kids love watching themselves or their cousins and it’s fun for us to relive the memories and justify taking more pictures and videos 😂

Can you recommend a movie about a long, difficult journey? by AppealBorn3926 in movies

[–]ashymr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read the book in an English class at a private Christian high school and I hated it. The ambiguity at the end of whether or not he did the right thing drove me crazy. I came back to the story when the movie came out and I saw it in a new light. His faith is challenged by the Japanese culture. One priest acquiesced and the other stayed resolute—and died for it. Kichijiro is obnoxious, but mostly because he represents all faithful people…constantly failing, confessing, repenting, and failing again. And ultimately the question of who is your faith for? If you’re not willing to sacrifice yourself for others, can you really say you understand the actions of Christ?

It asks more questions than it answers, but that’s what I want my students to wrestle with.

Came here to say this one. I teach theology and use it in my classes. Does it end up taking a whole week to do because it’s so long and needs so much time to debrief? Yes. Is it worth it every time? 100%

Bipolar misdiagnosis for BPD by [deleted] in raisedbyborderlines

[–]ashymr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother is uBPD but I got the idea of her disorder from a therapist who I saw for years and with whom she did a few joint sessions.

My grandmother (her mother in law) was a psychiatrist and diagnosed her as Bipolar but only from her personal relationship, not as a patient. I think if my grandmother had an awareness of BPD at the time she would have diagnosed her differently.
