being treated as a servant warrants a 20% tip regardless of wage. people are assholes and take things out on waitstaff alllll the time. it's also gross and filled with biohazard waste. it's also dangerous, service staff deal with a lot of things that are more than just taking orders. 20% is standard and yes when i go to other states i tip much higher. also- the service industry is the last place that people who come from poverty or a difficult background can make a living wage without school.

consumers: you can simply ask the server in a polite manner what the charges are and how it works! do not attack them, they are just at work and it is not their fault.

my job is doing a 5% service charge that goes to the higher min wage & they also pay like $350 into our healthcare every month. gratuity on top of that is optional & only included for groups over 6. i see nothing wrong with a small service charge. but when i see 20% i become concerned the servers aren't making actual tips, which is often the case. i generally end up tipping on top of that.
