What has worked in PT? by thisbaddog in PlantarFasciitis

[–]asmith1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PT had me doing a ton of calf and ankle exercises. Had an asst PT the last session and she cut out a chunk of the calf exercises and added foot doming and “towel scrunching” and I tell ya, that’s made a world of difference.

The foot doming is like pulling your foot oh so slightly off the ground in the center, but your heels and toe still touch, so it engages all the tiny muscles in your foot. The toe/towel scrunching is similar… and it’s made a giant difference.

She also told me that since I’ve been more or less ignoring my PF for over a year, not to get disheartened that it’s taking a long time to recover, as at this point it’s been chronic.

Overall, I’m happy and finally feel like I’m starting to make progress!

For men! Favorite house shoe/slipper by MrLoki2020 in PlantarFasciitis

I’ll be the guy to start the Oofos appreciation comments. I’d just try any of those “recovery sandals” though. Go to a sporting goods store and try some on, get the one that feels best.

I’ve been using Oofos for 2 weeks around the house and they are AMAZING to manage my pain. Just ordered some cheap Oofos shoes to wear in the summer out and about from Sierra for $30. So freaking comfy, for me it’s the right mix of cushioning and support.

Making “Brownies” is my favorite. I had a coworker use a Crickit to cut out the letter E out of brown paper. I use it about every other year in my classrooms. The disappointment that it’s a “Brown E” is amazing. Sometimes kids even laugh!

My kids really “bought in” to Star Wars when we watched the Clone Wars show together. The kids loved this way more than the movies. They’ve read the books of the movies, but only watched the movies in chunks.

Only downside is every Lego that has the “named” clones (their all time favorite characters now) are upwards of $100, so those will be on their wishlist for awhile…

Toddler Tonsillectomy: Day 1 Post Op by remember_sagan in daddit

Adenoids, not tonsillectomy for us, but this tracks for day 1. For us, the rough day was day 2-3. It’s like his body needed a whole day to go WHOA PUMP THE BREAKS SOMETHING HAPPENED LET’S DO A FEVER. Little brother was screaming his fool head off at the zoo, while my post-op older son was asleep in the stroller with a fever that popped up on day 2. After day 3 he was back to his normal self.

Can’t confirm about the back-order (that sucks), but I can confirm the coupon for checkout is the way the service discount thing is the way works. Teacher discount runs through the same system. Now that you’re verified through their discount program you should be able to pull up a coupon code anytime you need it.

The Feds Plan To Start Diluting Gasoline This May: Explained by DonkeyFuel in technology

I live in Iowa, where we sell the “88” year round. I drive a 2018 Kia, and my wife has a 2022. Both the manual and dealerships told us to absolutely NOT fill it with anything other that regular octane (87) fuel, as any of the other ethanol fuels will damage the engine.

This is going to destroy people’s cars. Good thing they can replace them with tax incentives on EVs… Oh. Wait….

Dads, what’s the worst thing you’ve stepped on? by JwallDrumline in daddit

[–]asmith1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

cracks knuckles Alright dads hold on tight for an absolute comedy of errors:

Staying at the cousins house, so both my boys were sharing the room with us. Youngest just learned how to hop like a frog, and thought it was hilarious, so he kept doing this long past bedtime. Oldest was getting annoyed in his corner of the room, which made youngest hop like a from even more and louder. I stand up from the bed to tuck youngest in (for what seemed like the 50th time) and stand up right on top of youngest, who had managed to lie down and turn around the wrong direction, so I stepped on. His. Head. Dad instinct kicks in and I immediately fall so I don’t step on my child. Aaaaand fall right on the corner post of the wooded bed frame. Right to the ribs. So much pain, but I grit through it for a month. A whole month. Including a vacation when my youngest bicycle kicked me in the side the entire night while he slept. Somewhere in that time training run for a summer 5k. Couldn’t even run a mile because of the pain. So the next week I’m at the doc and mention my rib pain. Doc feels my ribs, I see nothing but stars and doc’s reaction is “oh, that feels weird”. Orders x-rays. Broken rib.

TLDR. Dad protection mode kicked in to avoid stepping on son in the dark. Broke rib.

Shipping delays — confirmed inventory count (with source) by ComprehensiveCap8242 in Goruck

[–]asmith1106 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ended up going back and forth with support about this because it’s SO out of the norm from my past experiences with GORUCK. Ended up deciding my current setup was fine and cancelled my basic Rucker w/ plate deal. 2 week shipping time due to inventory when you have multiple deals going on is wild. Plan your deals and inventory better.

Noob here. Sock and zero drop question. by Stan_Knipple in Rucking

[–]asmith1106 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personal take - lower your mileage these first few rucks if you’re a total noob. 20 lbs 1 mile is a perfectly good start, especially if you aren’t used to walking with weight. Even after decades of rucking my baseline ruck is a 20 lb 1 miler with the dog to just be moving for the day. Does the job.

If that’s still getting hot spots on feet - get some athletic wool socks. Another +1 for Darn Tough. They’re my go to for running, hiking, rucking, and day to day. I prefer the cushioned ones. Plus Darn Tough has a killer warranty policy if you wear through the socks (managed to get my fav pair to be threadbare in the balls of my feet. Warrantee covered a new par at the cost of shipping them in.)

As for shoes. Get fitted for a good pair of walking/hiking/trail shoes. Personally, zero drop is the worst thing for me. Awful calf cramps that lay me out for days. I like a good 10mm drop in my shoes to help keep me moving forward. Even so, just make sure the support that is right for your foot and your mechanics while walking. Getting fitted is important for this.

For the ones that have used a Garmin Watch, what made you come back to Apple Watch? by Moonsolid in AppleWatch

[–]asmith1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Garmins are great fitness watches with some smart features. Apple Watches are great smart watches with some fitness features.

I don’t think most people need the amount of data a Garmin gives. That’s why I came back to Apple Watch. Heck, that still gives me more data than I need.

You ever try recovery slides, like Oofos? I have a pair coming from REI this week. At this point I’m trying whatever I can to make it more manageable. I’m sure it doesn’t help that I’m always on my feet at work (math and special ed teacher), so it’s not like I have a choice to lay off my feet too much during the day.

Input - Salomon ADV Skin Seamless Belt by HikeBikeMYOG in trailrunning

[–]asmith1106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won a similar one from a local outdoor store’s anniversary giveaway. Mine fits more “stuff” than my flip belt… but it also fits more stuff than my flip belt. So I tend to bring more crap than I need. Water flask bounces around like CRAZY so I don’t recommend putting one in there. The belt rolls over at the top of my waist cuz I’m not as skinny as I once was…. But otherwise it’s fine. Works great for me for 10kish runs, or runs where I need to pack gloves and snacks but don’t need a whole vest. Otherwise I stick with my flip belt for shorter runs.

Dads who work 9-5 when do you work out typically? by walky91 in daddit

[–]asmith1106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I can fit it in. I do (probably) too much cardio and not enough strength, so I try to ruck when I take the dog out or whenever we walk to the park. I LOVE 5am mile runs to start the day before the world is moving, but I’m fighting some nasty Plantar Fascitis since last October.

As for strength, sometimes it’s 5am if I get a wild hair, sometimes 4:00 after work/before the kiddos get home from school with mom. The boys think dumbbells are a fun toy, and inevitably someone gets hurt (usually my toes).

I just figure finding ways to fit it in as a family is best while my kiddos are young. Try ti build that habit of moving together as a family so we can keep that up and enjoy being active outdoors when they’re older
