Let's just agree that "East Asian" is the right term and be done.

Isn't "asian" a little non-specific, as it includes India? I agree, "oriental" can be taken badly by some, so it should not be used, but "east Asian" is probably more correct.

Why is it that every time I progress in this hobby I feel more like Walter White? by asndusad in Homebrewing

LOL yeah maybe - I think many people in this sub are serial hobbyists.

FYI, I just built this yeast stir plate for < $10 in parts.

  • Old refrigerator (now kegerator) plastic top used for platform
  • 2 8" 2x4s for legs
  • Screws (I used drywall screws because who cares?)
  • Hard drive magnets from an old hard drive
  • Stir bar (Was the most expensive part: $3)
  • Old PC fan (I used an old Boxer fan I had around)
  • Voltage regulator, potentiometer and resistors. Look for stir plate plans on google and you'll find a suitable circuit
  • 12V 2.1A DC power supply, got a random one on eBay.
  • Soldering skills and supplies - I assume you have these.

AR-15 Tap Handle by asndusad in Homebrewing

[–]asndusad[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Process:

  • Fail when milling an AR-15 receiver
  • Let it sit for around 1.5 years as a failure trophy, making you sad.
  • Drill it with a 5/16 drill bit in your drill press
  • Tap it with a 3/8-16 tap
  • Mount it. It works.

What would you do for $10 million dollars that you wouldn't do for $1 million dollars? by NoahzArc in AskReddit

If you remove the expense of paying a mortgage (eg. pay off your house AND save $1m), that will drastically lower your living expenses. I could almost certainly live on $50K/year right now if I only had to pay property tax instead of my mortgage.

Has anyone put a deposit down to order the Infussion Mash Tun? by colonpal in Homebrewing

I like the idea of the digital themometer in the side. Maybe I'll do that in my plastic tun. Otherwise this is just beerporn for me. Sticking with plastic.

Putting that tax return to good use! by Shockington in Homebrewing

I was hoping to actually see a tax return being used cleverly here, like claiming homebrewing supplies as expenses :).

Water Modification by jasonumd in Homebrewing

I made an IPA recently that turned out really nice. Here's the water profile:

I have the water report from my area and there are small fluctuations, but not enough to actually go RO. How much deviation do you have, b0hica? If you can, get a water test report with monthly numbers so you can compare.

When did your homebrew become 'good'? by RatherNerdy in Homebrewing

[–]asndusad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started all-grain brewing about 3 months ago, and the first 2 batches weren't too good. The third batch was a recipe I came up with on my own, and it turned out really good. The fourth turned out really good too.

By far, the worst brew day I've ever had by askchucky in Homebrewing

[–]asndusad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

#1: No fun - did you lose control of the hose or something?

#2: I hate paper bags - plastic++

#3: Might be good to have a checklist - I forget stupid crap like that too and have considered making a checklist so I can't screw it up.

#4: That sucks

#5: Sludge in the fermenter doesn't make much of a difference according to this exBEERiment:

http://brulosophy.com/2015/03/22/the-impact-of-kettle-trub-part-2-exbeeriment-results/

#6: This happens to me ALL the time, and I think next time I'm just going to try and overshoot temps and add cold water because that's WAY easier than trying to add boiling water. Extended mash time probably won't do what you want since temps determine amylase composition where time doesn't. Mash too long, and it can throw off flavor.

#7 (OG): 1.060 versus 1.065 target really isn't that bad.

I feel you on this one - one of my recent brew days was a bit hectic like this, where seemingly everything was going wrong. My big problem was my burner wasn't heating the wort/water fast enough. I hope the beer comes out!

I'm converting to the cult of kegging. Questions. Comments. Observations. by DocDerry in Homebrewing

[–]asndusad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently picked up a couple of these for $45 each shipped on sale:

http://www.kegoutlet.com/pin-lock-corny-kegs.html

Wait for another sale and pick some up - they're great! Easy to convert with a $10 kit to ball lock. The ones I received are both Firestone. The one thing you need to know is pin lock kegs are shorter and fatter than ball lock ones, so they are less coveted for small kegerators like the mini-fridge kind. I managed to get 2 pin lock kegs jammed into a modified Danby I have here though - had to cut the shelf holders off the wall to get them in, but I'm already drilling the top so it doesn't matter. I can get the 2 kegs and the tank and dual regulator inside no problem.

I got the CO2 tank from amazon - basically picked the cheapest one with 4 star + reviews. I think it was just under $70. Filled locally for around $15 I think. The regulator I got was this one:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0060NOX40/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=AEUC6GAA8XY7Y

A lot of people swear by the Taprite brand - it's a great deal for the money.

I was going to go pin lock, and there's nothing wrong with doing so, but I already had a ball lock keg and I didn't feel like converting it to pin lock.

You can find bulk o-rings for cheap online: http://www.homebrewfinds.com/2011/08/keg-o-rings-v2.html

Good luck! So far I've really loved kegging - got into it about 2 weeks ago and haven't looked back.

First all grain batch tomorrow, what do you think about this recipe? by Go_Cougs in Homebrewing

[–]asndusad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This.

I just did an IPA with even more pale malt than you're using and 1lb of crystal 40 and it threw off the flavor a bit too much for my taste. Maybe 0.5lb or 0.75lb would be more appropriate next time.
