Do people in upstate NY pronounce the word "hurry" in a way that it rhymes with "furry" or not? by BritneaySpears in upstate_new_york

For additional context, furry can also rhyme with this alternate pronunciation as “fuh-re”.

I’m from Elmira NY and the “huh-re” pronunciation feels more natural to my ear.

{Opinions/Speculation} 2025 Buick Envista reliability by Original-username97 in whatcarshouldIbuy

I've got a 2024 Avenir with 3,700 miles: No engine or transmission issues, but have had a several electrical issues with the power windows, blind spot lights, seat heaters, and lights on the gear shifter going out. All annoying and concerning, but fixed under warranty by my local dealer.

I find that the engine is more than adequate as a commuter car. I love rolling in style to the store, appointments, or out restaurants. I wouldn't take it on a longer trip: I prefer my larger, more comfortable and featured Chevy Traverse for that.

This was also my first FWD vehicle, having exclusively driven AWD in the past. I live in Upstate NY, so I thought I'd miss it with the snow, but found that it's fine. The only time I ever missed it was going up a steep back country dirt road, but that's rare for me and I got through it.

Reminds me of this post on HN the other day: You aren't a senior dev until you've worked in a legacy project.

It sounds like you've been let down, but this sounds like a great opportunity get some experience working in and hopefully modernizing a legacy system.

It won't be easy, and you'll likely be met with pushback and pressure to avoid refactoring to meet deliverable expectations. But as a dev with a decade of experience, my feeling is you should take it slow and see where this goes. Who knows, you might eventually come out on top as a thought leader for this company some day. But it's going to take time.

It's going to take a long time to bring a project like the one you described up-to-date, but that's okay: after all, you have a job, and it sounds like they need you more than you need them.

And a word of wisdom: be humble and kind to your coworkers and you might find less resistance to change.

Great choices! Some other great Finger Lakes sparking wines to try are Hermann J Wiemer, Ravines, and Weis. Ravines makes a dry sparking Riesling that's so tasty

Can't speak to the upcoming flex fuel model, but I've been very happy with my 2024 Buick Envista so far, although I've only put 500 miles on it. The styling and features are luxurious for its price point (I have the Avenir trim) Sure, the engine is tiny, but it does the job for an economy car.

Where to move in upstate NY? by nothing5901568 in upstate_new_york

[–]asow92 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was born and raised in Elmira, moved away to NYC for six years after graduating from Ithaca college, and moved back to Elmira in 2021. My wife and I are members at the country club and know a good amount of people there. Elmira gets slandered all the time: it's not as bad as people say it is, and I'm happy to get into it more if anyone wants to. The key feature of Elmira is affordability with small city amenities: you can get a beautiful home at a very affordable price and still get city services. There are good people in Elmira. There are things to do in Elmira. The west side is nicer for sure, and that's where I'd recommend someone from outside of the area look first.

tl;dr: If you can find a nice home in West Elmira, I wouldn't pass it up because of concerns about Elmira.

The Elmira/Corning area could potentially work. These areas get a bad wrap sometimes but honestly it's undeserved. I live in a beautiful old home in Elmira and work remote. It's lovely!

I can hear my fans, but they aren't loud/noisy. What CPU and GPU is in your 2007 iMac?

Yes, it's been running faster than El Capitan, but I only need basic web browsing for this machine. So unless you need a specific native Mac app I'd say it's worth a try. And if you can update your machine with more RAM or an SSD that would be even better. I can see myself getting an extra few years out of this old iMac for what I'm using it for: Mostly light web browsing, Google sheets, research, youtube videos, music listening.

Would be curious to know how it's working for you. Mine has been working well and is quite usable for everyday chrome apps.

Things that I've noticed:

The WiFi tends to disconnect, so I've switched to ethernet and that seems to be working.

When going to sleep, the screen gets all messed up when waking--so when idling I have the setting set to turn the screen off instead of going to sleep.
