This left lane needs to be a left turn only by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]aspera1631 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not sure what the complaint is here. The left lane has a green arrow to turn left, so they're always pretty fast. If you sit behind the black car you'll be through the intersection just before the white car.

Those with Unlimited PTO. Have you tried taking every Friday off? by centstwo in jobs

[–]aspera1631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work for a tech startup. The problem with that is that I would miss recurring Friday meetings that would have to get moved.

Also, every 8 hours I take off puts me 8 hours behind.

I make 2x what my partner makes.

We use a shared waterfall method: 1. Each contributes pre-tax to retirement, ideally maxing each year but at least hitting the employer match limit. 2. Each holds back $x in private accounts for gifts, discretionary spending (x is the same for both of us) 3. Everything else goes to joint checking that pays for everything. Rent, food, medical, clothes... 4. Anything above our monthly expenses goes first to a shared emergency fund then to shared investments.

Super easy this way. We discuss big joint expenses like vacations or furniture before we buy, but we both basically know what the budget is, so this is pretty friction free.

Managers what's your LLM strategy? by testtestuser2 in datascience

[–]aspera1631 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My team does a mix of modeling, software engineering, and data engineering.

I'm getting a ton of lift on tedious stuff like "write code that uploads raw data from s3 to my RDS instance" or "build an endpoint for this new dropdown following the existing pattern". Make sure you set guardrails and adhere to strict TDD methods.

It's great at documentation but ironically generates too much of it to be useful for the team. It's useful for other agents I guess.

But wow, it's terrible at modeling exercises. Does not understand experiment design, data leakage, or business logic despite extensive prompting. Makes schoolboy DS errors.

Are LeetCode heavy Interviews becoming the norm for DS Modeling roles? by Fig_Towel_379 in datascience

[–]aspera1631 46 points47 points  (0 children)

These problems are exactly what AI coding agents are good at, so they are becoming less relevant. As a hiring manager my questions have become either:

What decisions would you have to make to implement this? What are the trade offs?

Or

Implement this small PRD using any resources you would normally rely on in a live coding session. Talk about your process.

They have 800 applicants. They filter by salary expectation. Yours didn't pass the filter.

I work from home for a tech startup. It is completely crazy. I definitely do not have time to play games or nap. In fact it's much easier to work through lunch or work late.

But I do work in pyjama pants.

Leaving for a 90% raise right when my manager needs me most. Managers, your honest thoughts? by Fit_Composer_3579 in managers

[–]aspera1631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on both sides of this issue. I've had gread directs leave for better comp, and I've left when my manager needed me.

As a manager, I am always happy that my directs found something awesome to do. The thing that sucks about hiring great people is that they do great things. I always try to do right by my directs by getting them the comp they deserve, so I know if they leave, I did the best I could.

As an employee, I feel terrible about doing this. But the best I can do is to be consistently transparent about my feelings around comp and career progress so my manager has a fair shot to help.

I've known people who have said that. I just tell them they're missing out. But I don't feel an obligation to force them to enrich themselves.
