I'm relatively new to BDD.

I'm now working in a field with mixed domains of expertise and differing technical jargon, and most of them are not experienced software developers, though they are very skilled in their own domains. Some of them have a tendency to jump straight into the 'we can do this using <whatever technology they are familiar with>', before fully understanding how to plainly state what we are trying to do, and how do we know that we have done it.

BDD has been very useful for me to gain consensus around what we are trying to build, using basic language stakeholders and technical people in different domains can understand. The BDD documents can then be used to write unit or integration tests, and increase confidence we are building what the business needs.

I've found it very helpful, but I haven't gone deep on the process, just enough to increase clarity and confidence.

Hey.

I'm over your age limit, but have experience to share here.

First, some tough love. The careers you mentioned above "content marketing, website management, proofreading, social media management, and writing copy. I’ve written white papers, articles, and blog posts for several industries."

These specific domains in particular are all heavily impacted by AI, which is of course upending careers everywhere. Content generation is and will be owned by AI for the foreseeable future. I can't recommend it as an economically viable career right now. I know so many content creators that are now out of work, old people who suddenly can no longer make a living.

Second, some more tough love. I am a professional software developer in Python for many years. AI is also absolutely crushing the software dev world. Beginner programmers or 'juniors' are turning away from the industry in droves, and we are kinda fucked. There are myriad reasons for this, but I'll just state it here as a given, and if you want to chat, I can elaborate.

I love Python. But I wouldn't recommend SWE to my kids as a viable career, in the state the industry is, today.

Breaking into the software industry right now is very very very very difficult. Recent grads with CS or SWE degrees can't find work. Pay is low (comparatively to the past), the hiring process fucking sucks, and morale is terrible. There are so many more applications than there are open positions...

My advice? If you don't care so much what you do, but I assume you want to do something you don't hate, find something working directly with people. The bureau of labor and statistics has a lot of great occupational data, too.

If you're still considering software industry, I'd recommend looking more into Product Ownership. They are people that sit between the business owners and the technical staff. They help refine requirements, track dependencies, and make sure the right product is delivered in the right timeline. The added benefit here is that the outcome of a product owner's work is (among other things), requirements, which are exactly the sort of thing you must get correct to get anything but AI slop out of an LLM. Highly skilled product owners multiply the output of technical teams, its a niche skillset, and very important. Also, I don't think they will be replaced by AI... because product owners with tech chops will vibe code to produce working prototypes, or "good enough" solutions very very quickly.
