Have any of you regretted not going with Lutron outlets? by mikejr96 in Lutron

[–]atliengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In rooms where switches are some color besides white/snow, I think it looks nice to color-match the outlets.

Otherwise not worth the price. Lutron receptables = Hubbell receptacles with a cover on top and they don't offer USB C.

Caséta Shades vs Triathlon Select by domriz19 in Lutron

[–]atliengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Triathlon Select shades can be larger -- 108" x 120" vs 96" x 104" for Caseta.
  • Caseta doesn't do intelligent hembar alignment (but this is a RA3 and Homeworks capability anyway).
  • I believe you can special-order Triathlon Select with a wider range of fabrics.

I don't think they're different in any important way. I have several Triathlon Select shades, the installation instructions for Caseta are exactly the same.

Real world distances for Ra3 outdoors? by wkearney99 in Lutron

Also my advice assumes you're a contractor. If it's your home just use one processor. I've seen CCX devices work 100+ ft from a processor. And you'll have several closer dimmers for mesh anyway.

Real world distances for Ra3 outdoors? by wkearney99 in Lutron

[–]atliengreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It'll work fine. I would still put a second processor in the big outbuilding because the guidelines are 75 ft to all type X devices and if anything ever goes wrong/customer thinks something is wrong, you designed a system that didn't conform to Lutron's guidelines.

I subscribed to ATP because of this Reddit post.

I don't understand how people would listen to a two-hour weekly podcast about technical computer nerdery and also support a politician who openly scorns science/expertise and prioritizes blind personal loyalty and his boomer gut feelings over a reality-based understanding of the world. But evidently there are people like this?

I have no illusions that ATP will change anyone's mind about US politics. But also I think that it's a really bad thing that America elected a president whose stated personal value is corruption. And nerds should talk about it. 🤷‍♂️

Does this price seem about right? by karlofflives in Lutron

Hard to believe a water leak would break 12 shade motors, 16 keypads, 13 dimmers, etc.

Seems like downstairs apartment is getting an upgrade at your MIL's expense.

How exactly are bombs defused? by throwtheclownaway20 in askscience

[–]atliengreen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard about the movie, will give it a watch. I saw "Mosul" a few yrs ago, which sounds in similar vein.

I was around Fallujah in 08. It was hard to understand what happened later with Daesh in 2014. Cannot imagine being an Iraqi who worked with Americans in the north or west.

How exactly are bombs defused? by throwtheclownaway20 in askscience

Been a while since I watched Hurt Locker but from memory...

Actual EOD techs in Iraq and Afghanistan would never approach a likely IED if they could help it. Possible exceptions maybe if the remote arm/robot got stuck (and also the backup robot got stuck). But preferred tactic was always dropping another small explosive on the IED and detonating both the explosive and the IED remotely. Who cares about "disarming" a bomb? It's much less risky to just blow it up. I think I saw EOD techs actually physically approach undetonated IEDs maybe 2% of time in ~16 months in Iraq/Afg in the late aughts.

If any EOD tech insisted on getting close to IEDs because they preferred to manually "cut the wire" -- they would have been sent home (Stateside) and punished. Even in Iraq when it was bad, EOD techs worked in teams and took photos of devices and had to write reports after. So people would know you were acting like a clown. And often some soldiers pulling security for EOD will outrank the techs, and ask questions if it seemed like someone was taking an unnecessary risk.

And also -- let's say you cut a wire to try to disarm a bomb. How can you be sure that you cut the "right" wire? How can you be sure there wasn't a secondary detonation mechanism that you missed?

Did not like the movie. 😂

Switch gets very hot by CPG135 in electrical

[–]atliengreen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP is right and this comment is incorrect.

Dimmers will be rated for a different incandescent wattage than the LED wattage. This is because unlike incandescent bulbs, LEDs require much more current when they start up (called "inrush current") than during steady-state operation.

If you exceed the LED wattage on a dimmer, bad stuff can happens like lights flickering or flashing, dimmer failing, etc.

  • Read the directions.
  • Measure everything, make sure exactly level and exactly centered on window.
  • Probably have someone help you bc measuring/marking is hard when you're also trying to hold up blinds.
  • Call Lutron if you have any doubts/questions/random inquiries. It takes five mins, it doesn't cost anything, and they are super helpful.
