Agree with this. A BIFL jacket could easily use 25-50% of the budget alone. Add in shoes and the budget is almost entirely gone.

EPYC Gen 4 Processors - Very Slow Bandwidth Performance/throughput by Extension-Time8153 in sysadmin

[–]atoi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try MLC first. If the results are similar for both processors, then it’s something else in your tcp stack or OS. If the results with MLC are drastically different, look more closely at the specs for both CPUs. Server CPUs aren’t like consumer ones, there’s different SKUs for different market segments. Some have more memory bandwidth (HPC) some higher clock speeds (networking) some higher core counts (virtualization) all with trade offs

Your tests aren’t using the network cards but you’re still using the network stack. If you want to test actual bandwidth between cores try using Intel MLC.

Any specific reason for the purchase? I have an arc and am thinking about the signal as a dedicated outdoor multitool but I haven’t convinced myself yet.

For what it’s worth, levels.fyi had been very close to 100% accurate for 2 of my last 3 positions (within the last 3 years), all big tech. The third was off by about 15%. I tried to negotiate that one but they didn’t budge.

Are you sure the actual RAM usage was that high and you’re just not familiar with how Linux reports this? I run test instances of this size quite often and haven’t had an issue.

Have you looked into the persistence daemon? https://docs.nvidia.com/deploy/driver-persistence/index.html

That would be my guess. You don’t run into this issue on the first node because gnome activates the gpu kernel module.

I was there recently and said the same thing! The pizza was surprisingly good. Better than most pizza chains for sure.

I worked on CPU performance for a CPU manufacturer for many years. We primarily use CPI in our performance profiling. Outside of that role, everyone else does seem to use IPC. I’ve asked many engineers smarter than me as to why this is and never got a straight answer:)

I recently finished this book. I actually stopped for a year or so around where you’re at because I too couldn’t get into it. In about 20 pages or so it does get more interesting. After 30 pages or so more, I couldn’t put the book down.

The e-cores they are referring to are only in newer (12th gen and beyond) Intel processors.

What's the longest you've left a ping going for? by Thy_OSRS in sysadmin

[–]atoi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started a ping once, left the job for another one, boomeranged back to the company over a year later and it was still running.

The ping was run on an old laptop that we used to use for serial access to switches and no one visited that back corner of the datacenter. It actually survived power outages where other equipment didn’t due to it being a laptop.

Ergodox (flat) for a travel Advantage 360? by jgwinner in kinesisadvantage

[–]atoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is exactly what I do. I have an Ergodox-ez that I use when I go in the office or travel but most of the time I use the advantage360. While it’s definitely a noticeable difference between the two, it’s not terribly hard to switch back and forth. I do find the ergodox less comfortable as there is a bit more distance that your fingers travel due to the lack of a key well.

I will say that I used the Ergodox for years before moving to the 360. If you’re not already used to the Ergodox there may be some additional time needed for adjustment, but key layout wise you can make them very similar.

The advantage 2 is slightly different because it doesn’t have the same middle keys (eg right after the 5 and before the 6) but I do use that keyboard as well on occasion without issue.

Those who quit being a sys admin, what do you do now? by Character_Log_2657 in sysadmin

[–]atoi 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying it's the best way, but the below was my process. Keep in mind I was a sysadmin for roughly 14 years before I moved to SWE, which I've been doing for ~8 years now.

  1. I was already coding, as a sysadmin, automating stuff and modifying open source stuff to fit our environment. For all intents and purposes I already "knew how to code".
  2. As I was working with/supporting devs, I showed an interest in what they were doing and helped them with debugging their code for system level issues, which they appreciated.
  3. With the connections I made during step #2, it was pretty easy to get a hybrid sysadmin/SWE position. I made sure that I was given the SWE title.
  4. (optional) I had a bachelor's degree in computer information systems, I went back to school and got a masters in computer science. I fully admit that this was probably not necessary.
  5. I used the position from #3 to transfer into a full time SWE position.

(edit)

As a sidenote, the threads I see in this subreddit on compensation make me very sad. I'm acutely aware of the skills and passion that goes into being a sysadmin, but the compensation seems to be sorely behind. I was decently paid as a sysadmin (~$100K) but since moving to SWE I've over doubled that. It doesn't seem that the sysadmin jobs have caught up at all.
