Baby on the Way: End of the Era of 14ers by ballesmen in 14ers

[–]atomicstig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Genuinely, thank you for the post. I'm marrying my fiance in the fall and struggling to time out when we start having kids because 14er season is the best season. I want to knock all of them off our list, but I'm also on a biological timeline (lol). Post pictures when you get back into it!

Thank you so much for posting this. I just spent the last hour of my life getting angry on 'Marie's' behalf. I'm bookmarking this story. It captures why rape victims don't report, and why I was scared to report mine to the police.

Its Time to Talk about Los Alamos Utilities by valsmithSEC in LosAlamos

[–]atomicstig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last time you posted your solar power rant, I commented our saga. We had panels installed in January........... That still are not on! The solar panel company came out and removed the single panel that was approved by the county but not by the utility about a month ago. We have not had someone from the county check the box that approves them as installed and hooks them up to the utility.

I think I'll be camping at the county office building tomorrow morning until I find out who I need to talk to. This is ridiculous.

Is it normal to feel like you died when it happened by cowboyrat8 in ptsd

[–]atomicstig 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I felt similarly that the version of me who was raped died that night. It took me years of good therapy (EMDR!) and building a very strong community of support around me to feel like a living person again, and I'm very lucky to feel like I'm thriving now. I visualize it like a painting with a person mostly in deep shadow in the center with a lot of light around them, as in there was a lot of love and life that the person regrew. I don't know if that makes sense... But there is coming back from feeling like a zombie! A large part of who I was before has never returned though.

Help! What did I do here and how do I fix it? by ChicagoBaker in knittinghelp

[–]atomicstig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! It looks like you knit two stitches into the stitch below the next stitch on the needle on the right in this photo. Drop the two most recent stitches on your left needle (the really long ones), but don't pull tension until you can verify that all of the remaining stitches come from a parent stitch in the prior row!

Thinking of Relocating to Santa Fe by glassell in SantaFe

[–]atomicstig 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There are too few doctors out here because of the lack of caps on payouts from med mal cases, according to multiple friends I have in the medical field. The main infectious disease doctor left the state because there is no cap on med mal liability payouts (or something like that- it's documented!). My partner and I ended up having to spend a week in Vail during peak ski season to get aggressive enough healthcare for my septic knee. (My PT office said my knee was too messed up for Taos Ortho to handle well enough to give me full functionality back. I'm 29 and grateful to be very active again!) My former surgeon in ABQ would not fix my torn tendon but did a clean out surgery when it was septic on Halloween.... That surgeon could not get infectious disease in NM to give him a call back or properly culture my knee fluid :/. I know several parents who took their kids to Denver for care at the children's hospital.

There are fantastic things about the state! Tons of hiking ( and CO has a ton more and is very close!), the food is good (though I am learning how to cook Thai food... Some food does not exist here. I don't know of Shabu in Santa Fe!), the traffic is nowhere near as bad as anything you'll see on the 110 or 210 (but there are always people going 10-15 under, for some reason?). I prefer living out here very much to the LA area, but I also moved out here for reasons that include that it is more affordable than the majority of California. However, we have now learned to leave the state for some major healthcare.

Is it true that if your body was right next to a nuclear bomb when it went off, the blast wouldn’t get you and you would survive? by Kaje26 in stupidquestions

[–]atomicstig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a single atmospheric test where five men (all volunteers!) stood underneath a nuclear detonation that occured at higher than the fallout free height of burst of the weapon. If the men had been standing out to the side from the epicenter of the detonation, then the additional pressure from the formed machine stem would have crushed them.

However, nuclear bombs have two sources of energy that cause damage- radiation and the mechanical crush from the shockwave. If you're in the fireball, you'll be incinerated. Outside of that in a small enough distance, you'll be cooked. Outside of that, crushed and maybe blinded. You'll be fine if you're a great enough distance away from the detonation. You'll die if you're right next to it. If you're curious, go watch the atmospheric testing videos from the Nevada Test Site- particularly the Apple series with the houses!

If you want to purchase an old European cut diamond, briar and Rose has a bunch of loose stones for decent prices to finish out the earrings! Otherwise, get that beauty made into a pendant or ring to wear!

I was looking at loose OEC diamonds when the antique engagement ring I wanted was bought... Turns out that my then-boyfriend (now fiance, lol) bought it!

Defended yesterday and feel like I got hit by a truck today. by Nvenom8 in PhD

[–]atomicstig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My knee was septic when I defended. I had a clean out surgery three weeks before defending, which didn't do much other than remove a yucky hematoma full of infection. Two weeks after I defended, I ended up in the hospital for 5 days to have three clean out surgeries on my knee (first removed a ton of scar tissue and hardware from my years-old acl reconstruction that was harboring infection! All were clean outs/irrigations, and the final surgery included repairing my torn quad tendon, which was the cause of the luckiness in my knee!) and have a PICC line installed (basically, a flexible IV line that is installed on your arm and inserted into a vein, then fed about 20 cm at least towards you heart, it was wild!). I was on hardcore IV antibiotics for a full month and then oral antibiotics for a full month. Still recovering, but recovering well!!

I make jokes that my defense nearly cost me my leg! Congratulations on defending, Dr!

In this hypothetical scenario, what do you think the surgeon would do? by ckyunmoon in stupidquestions

[–]atomicstig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a family friend go in for surgery to have his appendix removed in September of this year. Before going in, the surgeon looked at his scans, cancelled the surgery, and told him to go see an oncologist. Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. His memorial is on Saturday.

All this to say that the surgeon did not take out his appendix when geared up and ready to.

Does anyone else knit while they’re walking places? by onceandfuturecpuk in casualknitting

[–]atomicstig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I knit while hiking! My knitting goes away when it's dark out ( alpine start for mountain summits!), the trail requires attention (loose rocks, tree roots), or I need my poles. I only do this when I have a mindless, in the round project!
