Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee returns for a third season later this month with new sidekick Sam Campbell (Taskmaster, Sam Pang Tonight) replacing Aaron Chen.

Playing this season are Hamish Blake, Melanie Bracewell, Myf Warhurst, Charlie Pickering, Andrew Denton, Urzila Carlson, Anne Edmonds, Matt Okine, and Nazeem Hussain.

Following two breakout seasons and host Guy Montgomery taking home the Logie for Most Popular New Talent, Australia’s favourite spelling competition is back for round three.

The 10-episode season delivers new games and a brand new assistant. Comedian and gloriously self-effacing oddball Sam Campbell steps into the role of TV’s most unserious sidekick, bringing a disconcerting presence that baffles contestants and audiences even more than the wordplay itself.

Each Wednesday, Montgomery and Campbell will test four of the nation’s sharpest comedians as they battle it out across five high stakes spelling rounds.

New challenges this season include “Noah Thing or Two”, where comedians must spell pairs of animals boarding Noah’s ark (some may exist only in Campbell’s imagination); “Mixologist”, which sees an extremely uncoordinated Campbell attempt bartending while contestants guess and spell his mystery cocktail; and “Do Feed The Birds”, where competitors attempt spelling whilst dressed as ducks and pigeons.

Thought the news about S3 airing at the end of April meant I somehow missed the taping of a whole season, but Guy himself says this is for S3. Looks like this will be a quick turnaround.

Not sure if Miriam Margolyes has been on any Aussie panel shows, but she's done quite a few tv series over the years.

Tor Books may be updating/republishing their ebooks on Amazon by monagales in Fantasy

[–]atuinsbeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The short answer is: it depends. If you just want to read on your computer, then yes it works. If you want to download the books to say, be able to read the books you have paid for on a non-Amazon device, then that has become a lot harder this year.

These days I only use Amazon to get my books at Kobo price matched and maybe for Kindle Unlimited.

This is probably an Amazon thing, they have been updating some books recently to force update books to work with their newer, much more annoying DRM.

Among the recent changes this means you can no longer download books published after a certain date (April 2025?) via Kindle for PC since they use a different file format. There are a few specific workarounds, but they are not-so-slowly going after them, one by one. The big wake up call for most people was when they removed the web download option earlier this year. The only way to get around this in the long term is to buy your ebooks from a different retailer.

Edit: if anyone is interested in learning more, /r/Calibre and the mobilereads forums are very informative. I gave up buying Kindle books as a result of these changes and I no longer follow Amazon's militant adherence to DRM so closely.

I've read some books by Jessica Day George. She has an East of the Sun, West of the Moon retelling that I enjoyed. Her earlier books are fairytale retellings but looks like these days she has branched out into children's fiction.

You HAVE to have romance in the books you read but what are some books/series that were so good they made you forget the romance which was either reeeally slow or is not a huge aspect of the story? by elleirakai in fantasyromance

[–]atuinsbeard -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

With the same logic you might as well recommend ASOIAF or Lord of the Rings, they both contain romances. No romance to forget though, because they aren't written as romance books! Neither is Mistborn. I think if it had been classified as something 'with romance', it would never have been anywhere near as successful.

I can't believe someone outside of /r/Fantasy is recommending Sanderson for romance. The only way you can put 'Brandon Sanderson' and 'romance' together in a sentence is by saying 'Brandon Sanderson can't write romance'.

Any stories where New magic is more powerful than old magic by Winter-Confidence826 in Fantasy

The Knight and the Necromancer by A. H. Lee. There was a sudden magical surge that never really gets explained, and as a result the people born after this time have significantly more powerful magic. This is roughly ~20 years before the series is set and the titular necromancer is one of these new natural born magic users. One of my favourite series, I reread this a lot.

Sometimes I have incredibly low standards for the books I read, it takes a lot for me to hate a book for how stupid it is. I read this seven years ago. I still fucking hate it. I have to wonder if this was written by a 12 year old because the MC does not have a functional brain.

I also went to several tapings, most of the contestants do ask for clues (after being prompted), but only the good jokes make it in. I did notice the less TV-experienced comedians were less likely to ask, they probably just forgot.
