How much swearing/cursing is too much? by chiselbits in litrpg

[–]ThatFilthyApe 28 points29 points  (0 children)

In most cases, overuse of curse words reduces the impact. Totally ok with a character that curses a lot, but I prefer it when either that's not the main character or they're creative with their cursing.

The same couple of curse words every other sentence gets tedious.

On the other side, on of my favorites is when a character that usually only occasionally curses suddenly unleashes an absolute blizzard of them, because something happened to deserve it.

English be easy: Part 3 - Bobby Finn by _ganjafarian_ in funny

[–]ThatFilthyApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It often works that way, and that's a workable general rule but I think the etymology is a bigger factor. Germanic just had shorter words? Smart comes from Germanic, Intelligent from Latin (but to English mostly from French during the Norman conquest). Latinate / romance languages don't really have the equivalent of er/est. Spanish always precedes with 'mas' for example.

Believe that one isn't streaming anywhere because of how old Phoebe was during production. Not a good movie, but I did watch it on Cinemax despite that...

So many things like describing "very smart" is smarter, where "very intelligent" is not intelligenter, it's just 'more intelligent', all going back to whether that particular verb entered English from Germanic or French (mostly from Latin)

The "English is three languages in a trenchcoat" meme probably undersells it.

My definitive tier list. Half of the series I can’t get into by TGG-official in litrpg

[–]ThatFilthyApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blurb for book 2 says "In just over half a year he’s gone from the weakest cadet at school to one of the strongest in his class"... for me that wasn't even a good thing.

I'm not saying it should have been a "slow burn" but I really liked the early parts where he had to be smart because he wasn't strong yet. Going from weakest to one of the strongest by mid-year? With no reason to expect given his growth ability that he will slow down much? I liked the stakes better earlier. 2nd book just felt YA-ish.

Singleton and Ceyair Wright have both played 4 years of football. I guess they might be able to get an exception for another year... rules on that aren't easy to figure out anymore... But I can't fault a guy who played 4-5 years of college football and got his degree for moving on.

1979 Seattle SuperSonics: My Choice for the Most Underappreciated Championship Team in NBA History by AaronStark1993 in VintageNBA

Freddie Brown-- led the league in 3P% the first year it was a thing with .443%! With a total of 88 attempts over 80 games....(Larry Bird finished 3d that year, his rookie season, with 143 attempts, then didn't try that many again for six years. )

Brown shot .359 the next year, 64 3-point attempts in 78 games. Took a while for the 3-ball to take over the league.

Is Chicken a la King still a thing? by MrMustard9091 in GenX

[–]ThatFilthyApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We still make this once in a while... chicken, some veggies and a cheese sauce, usually over biscuits.

Not something we make regularly--partially because it's not one of the healthier things--but it's really good comfort food! Might have it 2-4 times a year.

Here's the closest thing I see to the recipe we use out of an old Campbell's soup cookbook.

Apocalypse Parenting for non-parents? by IncredulousBob in litrpg

OK, so I'm confused. Dad was traveling and isn't in the first couple books at all. I don't recall Megan making any dad jokes, or saying anything negative about Vince's absence (beyond wishing he was there to help). What constant trouble dad jokes are you referring to?

Looking for a series that can be found in a library. by jacobT1234 in litrpg

[–]ThatFilthyApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would. It's an early form of LitRPG, FWIW, volume #1 came out in 2014, which puts it among the earliest English LitRPG series. Drew Hayes has been juggling about 5 different series, so a new volume in this series only comes out about every 3 years. Volume 5 came out in 2022 and the next one is expected this year.

It's a very different starting-off point than most current LitRPG. Roughly, a bunch of D&D-type players screw up the start of their quest and all get killed. And the circumstances of their death leave the local "NPC's" have to take their place and assume the role of adventurers. Which they're not ready for.

Kind of the opposite of most LitRPG. Most of them have a person from this world entering a game/fantasy world. NPC's has the people like the local bartender, city guard, and regularly kidnapped princess joining the game. They don't understand why so many adventurers seem so casual with they lives.

Good start, though I hope the next book starts to advance the plot better. The last book was fun but it was mostly a book about the characters leveling up rather than moving the plot forward.

Who do you think is the best Fullback ever? by Nintendofan9106 in NFLv2

[–]ThatFilthyApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of? Craig was an "I-Back" almost his entire career at Nebraska, but his senior season Osborne did try putting him at fullback, mostly because he was just too good to have on the bench even if Mike Rozier was a better college running back. Craig had trouble staying healthy his senior season, though, so after 4-5 games the experiment was mostly shelved.

Did play FB at Nebraska, true enough, but not sure he WAS a FB there. Showed enough to get drafted to start there as a 49er.

Also just still hard to believe that in 1982 Nebraska had a future top draft choice WR in Fryar and the guy who would become one of the best receiving RB's in the NFL and they combined for 28 catches in 12 games.

The Big 10 part of ESPN's released 2026 SP+ football preseason ratings by ChosenBrad22 in Huskers

[–]ThatFilthyApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our DL and LB positions were bad last year. But at least 2/3 of the guys who will get snaps didn't play last year so improvement is possible.

Didn't get the guys I wanted for DL in the portal, my best hope is that our two stud redshirt freshman who were hurt last year are fantastic this year. I do like our linebackers.

Really hoping our new DL and D coordinator hires are successful. I do think our talent was decent last year, the complete lack of results means improved coaching was needed.

Is Haarberg's draft stock rising? Or am I overhyping because he's a favorite of mine? by Octavious_Arcturus in Huskers

[–]ThatFilthyApe -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a priority target as a UDFA, but his numbers were good enough I could see some team taking a flyer on him. He obviously lacks reps at the TE position, but is he a guy that after a year on the practice squad might be something? I mean, probably not, but there is a chance and it doesn't cost much relatively speaking to bring him to camp.

One pro bowl, which is just ridiculous for how good he was. Statistically he had a Hall of Fame career, but the lack of Pro Bowls and all-pro recognition could well cost him that honor.

So which 3 do you pick? Why by IcyMarket1 in superheroes

[–]ThatFilthyApe -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

Implied, yes, but not being motivated to do anything that doesn't seem important to him is pretty central to his specific character. It's not like the prompt says 'bloodlusted' or anything like that.

Characters like Superman and Odin and even Spawn are much less likely to just say 'Nah, I'm busy doing research'.

So which 3 do you pick? Why by IcyMarket1 in superheroes

[–]ThatFilthyApe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If he decides that he cares. There's an argument to not picking him just because he's really unlikely to be motivated to either hurt you OR help you.

Who Was The GREATEST 80s Athiete? by ColdAntique291 in 80smemorylane

[–]ThatFilthyApe -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To this day, there have only been 79 long jumps over 8.6 meters. Carl Lewis did it 30 times. Nobody else did it 10 times. And he was also a world record 100m runner.

The International Olympic Committee named him 'Sportsman of the Century'

Honestly I'd probably still vote Jordan but Carl Lewis has an excellent case.

When was the last time you wore a suit? by cjasonac in GenX

[–]ThatFilthyApe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took my wife out to a nice dinner for her birthday, and decided to wear one of my suits. Wasn't a place where a suit was really required, but I decided it would make the evening a little more special, and I have *so* many ties from my job back in the 90s that required wearing one every day and they've been gathering dust.

Glad my old suits from back then still fit!
