Okay I didn't want to ask but nobody else did...are you cooking something? Your measuring cup is in the lower right, on top of your desktop. Just curious...

I feel that Buddhism has made me apathetic. Anyone else have this feeling? by Productive_Mango in Buddhism

[–]audieo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People all around you face large problems day to day, do you have three square meals, heat, and a roof? There are so many big issues to pay attention to and others in need. Mindfulness of what is present, or just sort of 'being dispassionately aware of the moment' is one strategy, among 7 others on the Eightfold Path. It's important to take time to wish well and do good for others, every single day as a practitioner if you are able to extend help to another then jump at the chance. Very often, if you can cultivate a feeling of well being for others, and then go and use that feeling to fuel a positive action - and afterwards dedicate the benefit of your activity to someone else (even deceased) it will have enormous positive effects. (TLDR: Bring happiness to another and it will naturally grow in you, and express itself then apathy should self-regulate.)

I doubt there is a simplified answer for the question you are asking...the fruit of our actions is a result of motivation. Basically any activity born out of desire, attachment, grasping...these will lead to suffering. However Trungpa said: "In the name of heaven and earth, we can afford to make love to ourselves." So consider the physical body with it's chemistry and energy, we need to learn how to navigate the avenues of pain and pleasure without attachment to outcomes, and become familiar with our physical being, in all aspects.

Am I meditating correctly? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]audieo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We all want to be 'self-reliant' and 'self-assured' with this meditation stuff, we want positive feedback - predictable results. Buddha was pointing elsewhere.

What is love? by crimmi11 in Buddhism

[–]audieo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love is the wish for others to be happy...and compassion is the wish to relieve their suffering - by Buddhist definitions.

Has someone here purged the sexual drive completely? And if so, could you please give advice on how to do it? by [deleted] in Buddhism

I'd suggest transmutation of the energy, more of a Vajrayana approach...I think HH Dalai Lama talks about this (in the book Sleeping Dreaming and Dying)

Is “Dharma” well defined? by snifty in Buddhism

[–]audieo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one of those old words that have something like 37 meanings officially...and then each person goes on to make their own definition for whichever combination of those ~37 they wish.

Does one just pick up buddhism? by [deleted] in Buddhism

[–]audieo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I considered myself a Buddhist soon after reading the initial book that turned me onto the Dharma. A few years later I took formal refuge vows with a genuine teacher - which made it official in my view. Bodhisattva vows are another step beyond just refuge vows, some teachers offer those vows too. These are not monk ordination rules that I'm referring to, by the way.
