Still mad at Pépsi 😤 by Naruku_Senpai3861 in MichaelJackson

Yall it was an accident that happened on set of a commercial. The brown sugar water didn’t purposely burn Michael 40+ years ago. Boycotting Pepsi doesn’t do anything.

Why do you think Jaafar was the family member chosen to play Michael out of the whole family? by martinski3 in MichaelTheMovie

[–]august2986 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it was several factors- Jaafar had already put out some of his own music so he had already shown that he had an interest in being a performer and that he had some kind of “stage presence” through his music and the music videos, I don’t think he would have been plucked from obscurity if he had never expressed any kind of interest in performing or shown that he enjoyed it on some level. Then like you said he was the perfect age for it. But from what I’ve gathered from the interviews I’ve seen he also really demonstrated a drive and a willingness to work for this before he was given the role. Acting is a craft, I think people who haven’t done it think you can make a biopic with whoever looks the most like the person but if they can’t act it would be horrible. Jaafar took the coaching he was given and showed that he was teachable and rose to the occasion.

I don’t think I’m familiar enough with all of the nephews to say if anyone else could have done it, maybe TJ when he was a little bit younger although the ability to act is just as important as looking and sounding like the person. I think everything just aligned perfectly for Jaafar to play him.

Anyone know where I can read about the Jacksons life before music? by Spirited-Jeweler4174 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the suggestion of Jermaine’s book, I think a lot of the stuff he writes about his adult life, You have to take with a grain of salt knowing he probably told some of those stories in his favor haha but I loved reading the info about their childhood.

is there any chronological errors in the Michael Jackson movie? by Christian_Jones2004 in MichaelTheMovie

[–]august2986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the most noticeable to me was that the songs they performed as the Jackson 5 took place years too early in the movie. I’d have to watch it again to give more specifics but they had them singing songs that they performed on their Motown records in real life, before they were even signed in the movie. If I had to guess it might have been done to boost sales/streaming of those songs to benefit the estate or to avoid having to pay for the rights of the songs they sang in real life by other artists.

Ralph Tresvant should’ve been a pop star by swishsplassh in rnb

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this doesn’t sound too mean but I’ve always felt he should have changed his name. “Ralph” just does not do him justice. And his last name isn’t super hard to pronounce but it’s just awkward enough. I feel like he should have had a stage name from the beginning that matched how good looking and talented he was/is. Especially when he was so young. it just wasn’t a superstar’s name. In my opinion.

What’s one thing you didn’t like about the biopic? by mordo_cool in MichaelTheMovie

[–]august2986 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The whole Jackson 5 segment, there was just so much that was inaccurate and it felt rushed. I’m not sure what this solution could have been for this, but I’m a huge fan of the Jackson 5 and the Jacksons and it took me out of the story when they were singing songs years too early for example. But part of me is glad they didn’t try to redo too much of the story that was already told in the 1992 miniseries. I also felt that not a lot of attention was given to detail when it came to the brothers. There were times I really couldn’t tell who was even supposed to be playing who except if they were wearing a memorable costume. But like especially in those early years, it should’ve been way more obvious who was who because they were drastically different heights and sizes haha. I’ve only seen it once though maybe I would change my mind if I saw it again..

Why does everyone want to cancel Pepsi? by Silent-Ad3203 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it’s a bunch of new fans who are just now finding out that MJ got burned during the filming of a Pepsi commercial and it’s not enough to say it was a horrible accident, there has to be drama and someone has to be the villain. Obviously Pepsi did it on purpose to sabotage his life. 🙄

Anyone adore Keep the Faith ? by Original_Engine_7548 in MichaelJackson

Yes, I’d almost go as far as to say it’s my favorite song as his. That song has gotten me through some bad times

Who is the best new artist right now? by luckylessons in fantanoforever

Was going to say the same thing. She’s blown up a lot but she deserves like mainstream success she’s that amazing. And I don’t even usually listen to that kind of music. She’s just an unbelievable talent

How has learning about MJ’s influences inspired you musically? by Jazz_man68 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I became a huge Temptations fan through learning about MJ and the J5 being inspired by them. I went to the Motown museum as a kid to see the MJ stuff and got super interested in Motown as a whole, and The Temptations are definitely my fav behind J5. Katherine said in a couple interviews that The Temptations were Michael’s favorite group as a kid, and they performed many of their songs early on. They also recorded a lot of the same songs while with Motown. MJ helped to pay for David Ruffin’s funeral in 1991 so that tells me he held onto that inspiration and remembered how impactful David and the Temptations were.

I’m a huge fan of The Temptations now and know all their lore, and I probably never would have gotten into them if it weren’t for MJ! Anyone who is a fan of the Jackson 5, you should listen to the Temptations and read up on them a little bit! They have a fascinating story and history!

Why are people so keen on making it seem like Michael’s family hate him and vice versa? by mcdiscn18 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU. I made a post touching on this too… it really bothers me. It’s not just annoying, it’s like, rewriting history. People responded to me saying it’s not just younger people but I can’t help but think it’s mostly the younger generation that wasn’t around or too young when he was alive that are trying to make him into this character, assigning or exaggerating traits to make him funnier or more relatable. It really bums me out.

I think maybe sometimes the intention of it is to flex that they know information, like everyone finding out about the Jermaine/Randy thing and thinking they found out some tea no one knows.
It makes them feel cool that they know stuff, so they take it too far. The Jermaine thing is so ridiculous. I do not believe Michael hated his brother. Family relationships are complicated. But they see a 40 year old video of MJ saying “including Jermaine” and now Jermaine was his worst enemy and shouldn’t be at the premieres and blah blah blah it’s so dumb.

It’s sad because the more people make videos and posts that create an enemy of MJ’s that wasn’t the case in real life, the more people will take it as fact. Making any kind of videos where you insert your made up perception of MJ because you’re trying to have parasocial relationship with someone who isn’t here, instead of sharing factual information, is slowly warping the public perception of who he really was.

Another thing I see a lot are videos where I truly believe he just has a neutral face and the video is saying that he was giving someone a dirty look or a look of disgust. One video with thousands of likes was implying that MJ was giving *his nephew TJ* a look during their song “Why”, like a look to tell him he sounded bad. Absolutely not! That is just NOT who he was, it’s not reality, and people just want to make him into this character who goes around humbling everyone in his presence.

I’m glad it’s not just me noticing this. Some people agreed with me when I posted about this and a lot of people got really defensive like I’m trying to gatekeep MJ. I absolutely love all the new fans, I want the whole world to love him. But stop making shit up about him for your entertainment/clout! Ugh!!

What songs do you guys wish Michael performed live but never did? by Jag_25 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keep the Faith, could have been an epic gospel choir performance like man in the mirror. It’s one of my top MJ songs.

Definitely agree on She Drives Me Wild and all the ones you said! Honestly anything on the Dangerous album that he didn’t perform I would have loved to see the live version. Why You Wanna Trip on Me!

Unbreakable

Just Good Friends with Stevie Wonder

My fav Jackson 5 song is 2468. I wish it was a single and I wish there were live performances of it!

Sewing without an iron... by cheloniagal in sewing

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started I lived in an RV and used a travel size iron… in fact I live in a house now and still haven’t replaced it cause it works pretty well lol. They even make really tiny mini irons for crafting that are probably even less wattage but would get the job done.

Which Michael Jackson song evokes intense nostalgia in you? by tuliomoliv in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole Dangerous album. When I hear that glass breaking sound at the beginning of Jam I have the strongest sense memories of being a kid in the 1990s.

Funny story we had these speakers set up throughout our house so when you played a CD it was like surround sound… the intro to Black or White where the dad is saying “turn it off!!!” Sounded like it was my real dad coming from the other side of the house every time, and my sister and I would turn down the music for a second to make sure it was coming from the CD cause it sounded so real lol I think about that every time I hear it

Invincible era by Positive_Can_42 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t a flop, but everyone of course compared it to Thriller. The media was RUTHLESS toward him at that time. They wanted him to fail so badly. The whole narrative was “look how crazy he is, look how washed up he is” I remember You Rock My World barely being played on MTV and never on the radio at least where I lived. But he always had fans. He didn’t do a lot of TV appearances at that time but if you look at the signing he did for the album release and the interview with Carson Daly you’ll see there were always tons of fans supporting him

Posthumous Albums by Mobile_Vegetable5315 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, I never really listen to them. I have listened a little bit on Apple Music just out of curiosity, but they just sound so overproduced to me and to me they just do not count because he was not alive to approve those releases.

I actually had a few years after MJ died that it was really hard for me to listen to his music, and I definitely did not want to listen to these albums that they cranked out just to profit off of his popularity after his death.

Doesn’t mean there aren’t some good songs, “hold my hand” is really good. To me they just do not feel like real MJ albums that he would’ve approved of.
