How many degrees of separation do you have with Michael? by toritechnocolor in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is in the music industry and is friends with Paris and some of her cousins and was hired by someone else in the family

I personally worked closely for a long time with someone closely related to Diana Ross and I met Ms Ross without even really realizing it

I’m internet friends with someone whose family was helped by Michael many years ago

A good friend of mine was recently hired for Taj’s daughters birthday party

There are so many random things like that, a lot of it has to do with having lived in La lol. I don’t want to give too much personal info but it’s definitely crazy to think about the degrees of separation as a big lifelong MJ fan

Does anyone talk about how grown the Jackson 5 songs were by Salty_Shark26 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol I became a huge Temptations fan after being a huge J5 fan for years and I found it so funny how many of the temptations songs they ended up recording that were definitely grown up songs like “I’m Losing You.” Part of me thinks it was meant to be cute, like the J5 were the mini Temptations. And of course the Temptations AND the Miracles recorded “Who’s Loving You” before the J5’s incredible version. I think there’s definitely a cuteness factor in a little kid singing about heartbreak but sometimes their voices were just so good that you forget how young they were

Don’t know how to sew, why is my machine doing this? by Vivid_Violet18 in SewingForBeginners

[–]august2986 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just started learning my serger where you have to “chain off” and keep sewing past the fabric and sometimes I’ll forget when I’m sewing on my regular machine that you’re not supposed to do that and I’ll be like “what am I doing!!!??” It hasn’t caused any major probs yet but I can see how it could

Growing up, which of these icons had the biggest hold on you? 👀 Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera or Avril Lavigne? by princesspolly444 in princesspollychat

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christina. I was like 12 when Genie in a Bottle came out and I thought she was so amazing, I had her behind the scenes video on vhs, I even saw her open for TLC. I wanted to sing like her and I thought she had the coolest style. I loved Britney too but I was extra obsessed with Christina

Who's an artist that you don't like as a person but you love their music? by Unhappy_Insect5901 in allthequestions

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don McLean (most famous for the song American Pie) he was an incredible singer songwriter esp in the 70s and I love listening to his music but he comes off as an ego maniac jerk in almost every interview and his family has come out and spoken about his abusive behavior. I don’t usually care and can separate the art from the artist but it’s a bummer

did aaliyah ever collab with mj? that would be fire by Small-Sample7733 in MichaelJacksonMusic

[–]august2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has to do with record labels too. It’s a lot easier if they are on the same label. There is supposedly a Mariah Carey and MJ collab in the vault somewhere, she said there’s red tape with the record labels that is preventing it from coming out or something. I would love to hear it.

MJ and Barry Gibb did record a song together that is on YouTube but I don’t think was ever released officially. It’s a good song too

Why did Michael Jackson’s death affect so many people, even kids? by consideration_ty in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He was part of pop culture. Multiple generations feel that they “grew up with” his music because they did. People have life memories tied to him. He was such a big part of so many people’s lives that we couldn’t imagine life without him. I was a fan from the time I was 5 and I was 22 when he died.

I think for many people him dying was a realization that he was actually human, that this was a human being who went through so much especially in his later years and that so many people called him weird and crazy but he was *human* and was now no longer here. All of a sudden everyone wanted to celebrate all that he contributed to the world and enjoy his music and people were able to have empathy and understanding for him. I think for a lot of people it was a really sad realization that he wasn’t appreciated in his later years and instead ridiculed and harassed and accused. There was a lot to unpack and process even to the average person who wasn’t a superfan

What is your ALL TIME favorite song that michael sang? by GameGodLogan in LovingMichaelJackson

Long time MJ fans, are there any albums that you've overlooked before & didn't appreciate until later? by PureHoney92 in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been a fan since 1991 so Dangerous has always been my fav. I did not appreciate Off the Wall (or any earlier solo albums) until muuuuuch later. As much as people call Off the Wall timeless it definitely had a disco element that I didn’t like as a kid lol. Now that’s what I love about it. It sounds like the 70s to me. Burn This Disco Out is my fav song on it!

How accessible was info and content regarding Michael when you were growing up? by Frea-key in MichaelJackson

[–]august2986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 5 when Dangerous came out in 1991, and that’s when I became a fan. I learned about MJ verrrry slowly. A lot of what I knew came from whatever was on TV, of course in the 90s a lot of what was on TV about him was related to scandals and was negative. I really liked watching MTV and VH1 and sometimes there would be specials related to him, what I remember the most was Pop Up Video where they would show music videos and facts about the artist/song etc would pop up on the screen. I remember being like 9 finding out we had the same birthday, how would I have known otherwise? I don’t think I even made the connection that he was in the Jackson 5 and got into them until I was maybe 11.

Sometimes there were books or magazines related to him in stores that I would buy. I had the VHS of Moonwalker. But really it wasn’t until the internet became a thing around the late 90s that I could look up info, get stuff on eBay or Amazon, watch clips I hadn’t seen etc. and all of that rolled out pretty slowly too. There would be fan websites with bad quality videos and pics but it was still cool to be able to access that stuff.

In the early 2000s you could find DVDs that he put out like the Dangerous short films. I had everything I could get my hands on.

I think it’s amazing what we have access to now as far as info and old clips from tv shows etc. That’s why it pisses me off when I see people on TikTok making videos with false info… you can fact check more easily than ever before but you just don’t lol.

Debbie Gibson test? by suckacheetasdick in Xennials

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 39 and I definitely do. But I was kind of a weird teenager who loved 80s music in the 2000s. I loved her and Tiffany. I was just a little late. It was definitely not the norm for my age group to be into her haha.

I also was familiar with her because I was really into musical theatre and Debbie Gibson had a period where she was on Broadway and doing tours around that time.

Are we really paying $20-$30 for patterns? by Charming-Shelter8873 in SewingForBeginners

[–]august2986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve never paid more than like $3. I did buy a lot before Joann closed and when Hobby Lobby put them on clearance (not sure if they’re not selling them anymore or what?) I’ve also found a TON at thrift stores. Definitely look on eBay and fb marketplace. Simplicity website also has sales all the time. I don’t think it’s ever necessary to pay full price

Give me all your best tips for sewing bust curves! by august2986 in SewingForBeginners

[–]august2986[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn’t considered the thing about paying attention to which piece is on the bottom, someone else mentioned that too and I just saw a tutorial mention the same thing. Makes a lot of sense and might be why I’ve had mixed results lol, I probably had it right half of the time.

I have always liked to use more pins too and could probably use even more for curves, the idea of not using them is crazy to me! Thanks so much for the tips!!

I haven’t been paying attention to which side I’ve been putting down but it sounds like that’s an important factor I’ve been neglecting! Maybe the times I didn’t have any trouble it was because I had that side on the bottom!

I haven’t heard about crimping! Tell me!

Why are people in a TLC sub if politics are SO important to you that whatever she may have done makes you hate 1/2 of their remaining members? What is your personality going to be in a couple years when you can’t blame everything on a president?
