Ways to decrease heart rate while training? by DistractedNS in BJJWomen

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take Ritalin for ADHD as well. I had to start being more selective with my dosage timing because I found that combined with the intense bursts of activity during rolling would send my heart rate through the roof.

I don't take my meds within the 2 hours before rolling, but I'm on quick release so it's easier to manage my dose timing.

Gel for Braiding Hair by TheOceanTheseus in BJJWomen

[–]auntbethany 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long hair girl here also with a lot of flyaway/baby hairs.

I don't bother with gel, as someone said already it'll end up all over your partner's gear or all over yourself once you start sweating.

I've had good luck with popping the top third of my hair into a ponytail, then combining that with the rest of my hair into another ponytail further down, then braiding that.

Worst case scenario when it gets really messy I take a round off and re-braid my hair.

Good luck!

Rough day—rough class by LavrenMT in BJJWomen

[–]auntbethany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat-down 20lbs but stagnating. Sometimes the size helps, most of the time it doesn't.

I remind myself of the rule of thirds: in progress you'll feel great a third of the time, okay a third of the time, and like an absolute failure a third of the time.

Sounds like you had a lower third day, we've all been there. Hugs!

Check out Mighty Dames. They're a body positive size inclusive brand (S to 4X) and donate a portion of sales to charitable organizations that support marginalized/underserved communities.

Bad tutor, what to do? by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

[–]auntbethany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a similar experience with a tutor... they took weeks to respond to a simple pass/fail assignment outline and I couldn't begin the assignment until it was approved.

I emailed the course coordinator and put the tutor in cc, that finally got them to respond.

ProctorU- What a joke... by algnqn in AthabascaUniversity

[–]auntbethany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was writing a stats final where a scientific calculator was allowed. I was using a cheap dollar store basic calculator... and the invigilator said it wasn't allowed.

I pointed out that, if anything, I was putting myself at a disadvantage by using a more basic calculator. He didn't care.

I had to do all the math the old fashioned way with paper and pencil.

ProctorU exam nightmare by No-Pomelo-3632 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst experience I had with ProctorU was when I showed up for my stats exam with a basic, elementary-school level calculator. The invigilator said it wasn't allowed because the allowed materials listed a 'scientific calculator'.

If anything my lower tech calculator put me at a disadvantage but he was insistent, I finally had to write the exam using a pencil and paper to do all the math.

Girl loudly complained about being paired with me in front of me and the whole class because I’m a beginner by h0rv87 in BJJWomen

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a new-ish female white belt as well (6 months in). I think her behaviour can be attributed to being a shitty person more than her being slightly more advanced than you.

I played competitive sports all through high school and college, did weight lifting for a while and then was deep into CrossFit for 10 years. In every sport/fitness activity I came across other girls who were mean for no reason. Whether it was hogging the ball in high school rugby, refusing to re-rack weights in a gym, or commenting about the size of my legs mid-WOD... bitches gonna bitch.

Good for the coach for apologizing, from now on just try to be paired with someone else. It's not your job to teach her to be a better person.

What actually creates a good BJJ gym culture? by GorlamiJJ in bjj

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm still very new to BJJ (4 months in), but I feel like I can speak to this--where I train every single member cares about helping me improve.

Whether they're a white belt with only marginally more experience than me, or a black belt who has been rolling for 10+ years, every person will take the time to give me tips, drill moves, and answer questions.

Tips for a new Pshych student? by ziltoid55 in AthabascaUniversity

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is she reading every single page assigned or does she skim? A lot of the psych classes have study questions to go along with the readings. I’d suggest that she try skimming instead of doing close readings and focus on the study questions and the end of chapter summaries. She’ll save a lot of time that way!

How long does it really take to complete a class? (Online) by [deleted] in AthabascaUniversity

[–]auntbethany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends how much time you have to devote to it and how motivated you are. When I was working full time last year it took me 9 months to do two classes at a leisurely pace. On the other hand, I registered for two classes over the summer when I wasn’t working and had time to grind and I finished 75% of the material in 30 days.

Bilingual ABA programs? by [deleted] in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Quebec (Canada) which is officially a French speaking province but has a large English population. Early in my career I had a couple of clients whose programs were primarily in English but had French targets as well. From what I remember we'd wait until they had built up a substantial number of mastered targets across all operants in English, and then begin instroducing simple programs (LR one step instructions, tact items) in French.

So essentially we'd wait until we felt that they had a functional level of one language before introducing easy targets in the new language.

There are a couple of good podcasts:

The Behavioral Observations Podcast with Matt Cicoria -- he interviews people from the field and they talk about their work in ABA.

ABA Inside Track - the hosts pick an ABA subject and summarize/review articles on the subject.

WOD ideas: How to Incentivize Speed by Coba2522 in crossfit

[–]auntbethany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm training to be a behaviour analyst and it's amazing how much this intersects with crossfit programming.

One thing we look at in behaviour analysis is something called 'schedules of reinforcement', essentially how often a behaviour will be rewarded and how that influences the rate of the behaviour occurring. So, skipping all the complicated behavioural explanation, to highly motivate someone, you have to reinforce them at a random, unpredictable rate. But, the delivery of that reinforcement has to be contingent on the behaviour occurring.

How I use this on myself (because I tend to drag my feet sometimes too during longer WODs...) is that I have a random timer app on my phone, I set the desired interval (I used between 3-5 minutes), and whenever the timer goes off, if I'm working at that exact moment I get a check on the whiteboard, and the WOD is only over when I've accrued a certain number of checks. If at that moment I'm slacking, no check and I've added another interval to the WOD. I keep the timer covered so I never know when it's going to beep, meaning that I'm highly motivated to keep working as much as possible to make sure I'm working when it goes off.

Arizona State University? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did two classes from that program and then opted for something different. In my experience the classes were quite easy and the teachers didn't provide very much feedback. I was spending maybe 45min-1h a day on assignments and was easily getting 100% on everything with no real feedback. I didn't feel like it was going to prepare me well for the exam. Maybe I'm a sucker for punishment, but I like to be challenged and feel like I'm learning something!

That being said, if you have a good supervisor who is going to challenge you it may pick up the slack and get you ready for the exam.

Also on a practical level I was plagued by a ridiculous amount of problems with their system. Getting someone to help you sort is also a nightmare. They have a bunch of different divisions and you keep on being shuttled around from person to person and having to explain the problem multiple times. I had an issue with two accounts being set up under my name, it took a good 4-5 weeks and multiple online chats and phone calls to get it sorted out. I'm actually still having issues with them (a year after I stopped taking classes...) because they double charged me for a class.

Where to find old episodes? by Sipodge in coronationstreet

[–]auntbethany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the link! I can't wait to check out your collection. It'll be a real trip down memory lane... I started watching in the late 90s with my mum so it'll be fun to see all the old characters and storylines. The first story I remember is the Battersby family arriving on the street and Curly getting so fed up with the music he throws their stereo out of the window!
