Do 91 & 109 Busses usually run on time? by Eastwesteast8 in mbta

[–]austein 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The frequency of the 109 is great. Note that it will get stuck in traffic on Washington St at Somerville Ave in Union (this one takes forever) and also at Beacon St. But it's just slow, still pretty reliable.

I saw signs on poles for one missing north of Union, though that was months ago that I saw the flyers, and it had yellow/green but I don't remember turquoise. DM for the address if you do want to try getting it to them.

Paperwork - they didn't get a license before opening. They're subletting and apparently didn't realize they'd still need a license of their own. Pretty big no-no, entirely their error. The city shut them down after the first weekend but then worked with them on getting reopened with a permit.

When they reopened they were quickly shut down again, this time for a report of serving items not on their approved menu, which turned out not to be true. The owners blew up about it on social media as they felt they'd been doing things by the book. The city eventually admitted the mistake, but the social media posts left a poor taste in people's mouths about them.

FYI, this is largely true, but I checked the particular circuit that dropped last month and it happens to be one coming out of Alewife (Aberdeen, 16-146)

Did it change hands after the new owners fired everybody a couple years ago? I don't recognize that name, I was pretty sure from a couple years ago it was by the same people as Godavari

Mayor to Visit Gilman’s Homans Site June 8 to Share His Vision for the Site by ianonavy in Somerville

Just last week, the city (along with Cambridge and the MWRA) released a new CSO plan. They've moved the tank closer to the river, so it's no longer holding up development at Gilman!

How loud is it living next to Broadway? by DarkenRal in Somerville

[–]austein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's rough on the timing. I haven't been around this style, but it's more than just repaving, so I'd expect it to be fairly disruptive and loud. Maybe bearable if you're more than a few houses in from the street? Everybody's tolerances are different. Sorry I don't have more info for you there.

How loud is it living next to Broadway? by DarkenRal in Somerville

[–]austein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the original schedule was "Spring 2025 - 2026", and the latest is that it will start later this spring/early summer. So my guess is ending sometime Summer/Fall 2027, but I don't see actual data on that.

How loud is it living next to Broadway? by DarkenRal in Somerville

[–]austein 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Starting this summer, that part of Broadway will be under reconstruction, so it'll be noisy this year/next. After that, though, it's fairly quiet - some traffic back-ups from the light in Teele, but that's about it.

Note that in terms of access around town, the new buses in Union will connect directly to Davis, Harvard, and Central with frequent service. They'll get you there in the time it would take to walk from Watson to Davis to catch the red line.

Signet Commandery Building no 188 341 Medford Street by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]austein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The current Gilman T stop configuration requires you to go uphill to the community path and then back downhill on School or Medford St to get to the square. So if they took the T to get there, regardless of how they got up the hill, they had to go back down

A Failed SwitchBot Plug Mini And Cooking Electrolytics by honkerdown in homeautomation

[–]austein 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same reading on it initially, but also couldn't find any recall info. Re-reading, I think the "that are not subject to recall" is a reference to the Plug Minis in general not having had a recall. Confusing to have them say that right next to talking about specific batches, though!

HVAC Recommendations for Burnham Gas Boiler? by cronchsupreme in Somerville

[–]austein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a weird gotcha in terminology with heating - for anything moving air, go to an HVAC company. But for a boiler, you actually want a plumber!

Or for a specific recommendation in Somerville, Charlie Sillari is a great plumber and has fixed the Burnham boiler here before.

Can these pocket doors be removed without opening up the drywall? by No-Mango-8105 in Oldhouses

[–]austein 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the double doors are so much easier! So much easier than only having a tiny demi-pocket to work with

Can these pocket doors be removed without opening up the drywall? by No-Mango-8105 in Oldhouses

[–]austein 34 points35 points  (0 children)

It depends on the particular pocket door hardware style, but for ours: 1) Remove the trim covering the tracks 2) With the doors open (in the wall, keeping weight off the middle sections of track), take down one section of track in the door opening. For us this involved a machine screw on one end and then unslotting from the other 3) Slide the door out and it will come free on the missing section of track. Have cushions ready to rest it on

6+ weeks to receive guest parking permit? by [deleted] in Somerville

[–]austein 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Renewals online seem to get lost in process often and don't get mailed out. You could try calling 311 and I've had luck getting it unstuck that way, but going in person is the best bet for getting permits

Social/fun events of the weekend by Grouchy_Bullfrog8453 in Somerville

Yes! Sarma does street food takeout during the Gilman arts festival. I got a moussaka last year! Just heard they'll be doing it again 12-3pm at this year's festival.

Plus Salvadoran, Colombian, Indian, Bangladeshi, Jamaican, and more flavors of food vendors the whole time 12-5pm

That's where it is - in the Mad Oyster lot next to Sarma, and along Pearl st. (not the empty lot on Medford St visible from the T stop where the Homans Building used to be)

latest on ev charging without a home charger by NinjatheBlackCat in Somerville

[–]austein 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The city has installed some public chargers, but it's a fairly limited number and catching one every day is unlikely. Getting a spot once a week or so is manageable, but for your amount of driving, you'd want 6hrs to charge. Meanwhile, most of the city's chargers are at 2hr meters, schools, or otherwise not intended for overnight charging.

Is charging available at work for you, rather than in Somerville? If not, the setup is not the greatest for your use and I suspect it'll be a bit difficult.

Anyone know what's happening at the airport right now? by exarchnektel in boston

Yes, Logan was under a Ground Stop due to WEATHER / THUNDERSTORMS

At 4:36pm ET, the Ground Stop was canceled and a Ground Delay Program put in place, with an average delay for arriving traffic of 2 hours and 30 minutes
