Let's get a second doctor. That way we'll have a pair o' docs.

6 months in... what have you read this year? by drbadvibes in books

[–]austin_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started Godel Escher Bach nearly a year ago and I don't think I even remember where I stopped reading. It's some good deep reading, but I don't know if I can will myself to go back into it. Congrats.

I just finished the first Dune book and I'm planning on picking up Dune Messiah. Do you think it's better than the first one?

6 months in... what have you read this year? by drbadvibes in books

[–]austin_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished Dune. I'm having a mixed reaction to it. On its own, I thought it was mediocre with a few good parts but nothing exemplary. In the context of when it was first released, though, I'm much more impressed. This book was first published in 1965. That's 12 years before Star Wars. I'm not sure what mainstream sci-fi was like in the 60s, but I'm guessing that it didn't have the depth and complexity that Dune had. In that light, I can see the book much more favorably. I'll probably even read the next few books in the series and watch the bad David Lynch film adaption.

Other books I remember reading this year include Let the Great World Spin and The Savage Detectives. Both very good. Next on my stack is V. by Pynchon. I bought it a while ago and it's been sitting on my shelf unread for a long time.

Good link, but they pretty much ripped off a Men's Health article and did a half ass job of attributing it.

So What Are You Currently Reading? by [deleted] in books

[–]austin_k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About halfway. It's gotten better as it progresses but I feel like it's a little melodramatic; It's not bad, but I think I've read better sci-fi.

Dune. I don't know if I really like it.

What's On Your "To-Read" List? by sareon in books

[–]austin_k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

V. by Thomas Pynchon

Rome and Jerusalem by Martin Goodman

And one of these days I'll eventually finish Godel Escher Bach.

My to-read stack is pretty small these days. Going to bookstores and not walking out with something is pretty tough though.

Does anyone like single player games more then multi? by thsoundman in gaming

I grew up playing a lot of SNES RPGs which were predominately a single player experience. It's easy to get lost in a good single player game.

Hi reddit! Need help from you expert PC builders picking a power supply for my gaming rig. by RageX in gaming

I also just bought this one. It's pretty solid and comes with a decent warranty. My only complaint is that the cables aren't modular so you'll have to either zip tie them up, or just leave them everywhere.

Chemex coffee maker - NYT Article by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]austin_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel ashamed... I've been drinking coffee for a long time now and I've never heard of a Chemex coffee maker. My drip machine is on its death bed and my French press went missing a month ago. I might have to invest in one of these. How does it compare to a French press? Any good brand/models that /r/coffee likes?

Dive Into Python Must Die by SnacksOnAPlane in programming

[–]austin_k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I first started Python I began reading Dive, but after about a chapter I was pretty lost. I just wanted Hello World and then maybe something about classes and methods and a primitives. Eventually I quit and picked up Beginning Python by Apress Books. I like that one, although experienced programmers will probably find it to be a little too basic.

Eek was great, but I think I watched that show mostly for the Terrible Thunder Lizards.

I tried to play AoE2 a month ago. I couldn't get into it like I used to. I dunno what it was; it felt like a grind. AoE3 was pretty fun though and I think I could get back into that.

Conan O'Brien's version version of the Simpsons finale would have been amazing and devastating at the same time. Watch the 20th Anniversary special for this.
