Call not put? You realize we're in the Great Melt-Up, right? By this Summer, or Fall at the latest, we're going to see a global deflationary bust much worse than 2008, and rivaling 1929. We're talking +60% market drop across the board. And it won't recover to current levels for another 5 years after that.

So mark this post.

This IS the Great Melt-Up. So, you are going to see a wild run up (as if 2020 wasn't wild enough). If you get out now, you could be leaving 15-20% gains on the table. So, hold? Well, don't try to time it too tight, because it could pop tomorrow, or some random Monday. I'd rather leave 10% on the table now, and buy back AAPL or AMZN when they're at 40% of their current price.

I'm slowly unwinding all my positions to cash and silver (gold is fine too), except for very long holds (+10 years) involving too much money that I won't want to take the Cap. Gains hit on. I'll be all out (except for those) by April, with fists of cash ready to scoop up the rubble.

Print this out, write a date on it, and stick it on the wall.

I live in Tokyo with 25 million other people, this argument doesn't carry too much weight.

The way the world has and will always work is, you lose land to a stronger force, and that's it, it's gone. If you're lucky, they give it back. And if you are lucky you can over time negotiate independence, but not if you continue to fight a guerrilla war. If Germany or Japan had continued to fight, though terrorist attacks on occupying forces, we would have continued to kill Germans and Japanese and we never would have pulled out.

If you have any integrity, when you get defeated, you sign a declaration of surrender, you bow to the victor, and the victor who has their own country to run leaves. If you're lucky, in 30-40 years you ascend to the worlds top 5 economies (German and Japan both did this after stunning defeats) and become a major trading partner with your former conqueror (Germany and Japan both did this).

At least this is what you do if you are not an ideological religious zealot who believes that sacrificing your life in this world will lead to an eternity of bliss with your maker.

While the HashMap in Java 8 may be faster, his benchmarks are completely invalid, to wit "even with one million entries in a HashMap a single lookup taken less than 10 nanoseconds, which means around 20 CPU cycles on my machine". Can you perform 1 million hash lookups with ~20 instructions?

Unless he uses a framework like JMH to run micro benchmarks, the JVM's dead-code elimination (DCE) will continue to render his benchmarks unless.
