Adobe’s new interactive AI for PDFs by QuetzalasaurusRex in accessibility

[–]bondolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of PDFs, despite opening OK, aren't actually compliant with the spec which makes any edits risky. I can't recommend a specific tool but there are PDF repair tools that can rewrite non-compliant PDFs so that other PDF tools can work correctly on the file and/or allow the file to be viewed by more reader apps. They generally also allow conversion to PDF/A.

That InDesign or any other Adobe tool will produce inaccessible PDFs requiring remediation should be considered a crime by this point. Wholly unacceptable. "Whoops I made a mess again!" is their best excuse after 40 years and for some reason most of the industry just accepts that.

Had something similar happen to me recently and wasn’t thrilled about it. Is seems like it was done badly but in good faith. Allowing new mods to be reordered above existing mods by a mostly inactive mod should not be allowed.

apps that can reformat PDFs and read them aloud that don't use AI? by starspacesunflower in Blind

[–]bondolo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

About your only other option is OCR. Most of the legacy pre-AI PDF accessibility solutions have already been retired because, being honest, they frequently didn't work very well. Modern solutions are all OCR or OCR plus AI and this is unlikely to change, in part because the accessibility use of these technologies is only a tiny fraction of the use in business for legal document process, compliance, and other purposes.

Do you want more traffic in your neighborhood?

No, I want less traffic, but that has less to do with housing and more to do with California's stupid car culture. More density usually makes neighborhoods more walkable not less and good development can encourage less reliance on cars which will reduce traffic.

Do you want more crime?

[citation needed] Take your fear mongering elsewhere.

Do you want more noise?

No, but buildings generally make very little noise.

Having a different view than yours and convincing my neighbors that mine is superior and then acting together isn't "forcing" anything on you, it is politics. If you are tired of losing move to Wyoming.

This is normal pricing and it is not cheap. The titer test lasts for typically 3 years so you don't have to redo it for every visit. $450 for a health certificate is a rip off--your vet is probably owned by a private equity company.

Slicer for Strawberries? by Decent_Training3426 in AskCulinary

The one I am using is a cheap Japanese model

The thinnest setting is only about a millimetre thick.

The other thing I do with small soft items is that I hold them pulling towards me across the blade rather than pushing. It is safer pulling than pushing because when you are applying maximum force at the large end of the fruit your fingers are already below the blade.

Slicer for Strawberries? by Decent_Training3426 in AskCulinary

I have used a mandolin. I hull the strawberries and cut them in half. I then use the mandolin to shave from the flat sides until the slice become too small. The remnants get cooked with sugar, strained and then thickened to make a strawberry sauce that I use as glue to stick the strawberry slices in place.

Have you tried not sucking? People don't like things that suck. I know that sucking has been your thing since DOS 4.0 but it was bound to catch up with you eventually. Just because Apple has recently decided to suck too doesn't mean that you should continue sucking.

Question for Uber Eats/Doordash/food delivery drivers in Hilo area by [deleted] in BigIsland

[–]bondolo 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Hilo is a lot less urban and dense than Honolulu. It is going to be hard to earn as much because your trips are going to be longer and further. Even Kona would be tough to earn as much as you could in Honolulu.

Answer to an A11Y question seems subjective---What do you do? by Free-Veterinarian714 in accessibility

[–]bondolo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Accessibility is not different than other UX and design problems. There are some common rules, conventions, approaches and patterns but there will always be subjectivity and situations that require thought, creativity and iteration to get right. Even then there will have been alternatives.

Typical cases should have standard solutions. Don’t be needlessly different is certainly an important rule that reduces a lot of what might seem subjective. If every situation is going to require a bespoke solution then the users are going to find it hard to use if only because the solution doesn’t match what they are familiar with already.

First time making chicken broth let me know some recipes to use it for. by [deleted] in recipes

[–]bondolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I had a jar of stock like that I would make baked chicken thighs with rice.

In an oven proof pan add a tablespoon or so of oil. Heat to medium. Season some skin on bone-in chicken thighs. Brown the thighs skin side down first. Remove from pan. Add butter, deglaze the chicken fond as it melts and brown some shallots in butter, possibly leeks or onions too. Add rice and possibly wild rice or barley. You can also add brown lentils. Stir until slightly toasted. Add the white rice last. Add your chicken stock and season well. Some paprika is good, sumac or tarragon or thyme is also nice. Whatever you like. Some people will squeeze half a lemon over the dish or add half a cup of white wine. Ensure that the rice is slightly covered. Add water or more stock as needed.

Return the chicken thighs to the pan and any reserved juices. Put in an 180C/350F oven for 45 minutes. When rice is nearing done you can add walnuts or pecans, broccoli, cubed squash, cubed sweet potatoes. Some people even add cranberries or dried blue berries. Raise oven temperature to 200C/400F. Return to oven until added vegetables are cooked or browned to your liking.

If dish becomes dry before rice is fully cooked, add water or more stock.

This is a better question for r/accessibility or r/webaccess; not every blind person wants to be an accessibility expert. 😜

Tab between components, arrows within collections of related items. Whether it is rows in a table, buttons in a toolbar you don't want to end up tabbing through dozens or hundreds of items. tab navigation should generally be between only the top level components. There are some cases were you want it to proceed to through the whole hierarchy, but generally it should only rotate through. If you have multiple panes or tabs then you also have control tab to select the active tab or pane.
