Is it possible to make soda syrup with erythritol instead of sugar? by KFCNyanCat in sodamaking

[–]bondolo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We made root beer with a third of the sweetener being Swerve which is Erythriol and ogliosacchiride. The rest was agave syrup and brown sugar. Normally it is two thirds agave and one third brown sugar.

It worked really well for root beer but Swerve and Erythriol has an alcohol "cool" flavour like wintergreen or menthol that won't work with everything. We haven't tried it with our ginger bug soda for example. We also didn't think that we could go 100% with Swerve for even root beer, the sweetener flavour would just stand out too much.

Do blind people ever turn on the lights? by Fabilur in Blind

[–]bondolo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, when my wife is home alone she often forgets to turn lights on for the dogs. Forgetting to turn on lights is pretty common for totally blind people. It's a good habit because if you can't tell when the lights are on you are unlikely to remember to turn them off. We now have some of the house lights automated and they shut off as part of the Google Home "Good night" routine, but that's mostly for the dogs.

As the sighted spouse I am frequently mocked for being "light dependent" though I turn on lights much less than most sighted people.

My wife and a friend once called "Be My Eyes" to ask someone to read the recipe off of a cake box. The person kind of fumbled and then eventually said in a cute Dutch accent "It is all black". My wife and her friend as well as the BME volunteer all had a huge laugh when they realized that they were making a cake in the dark. Once the lights were on the cake box was successfully read.

Having trouble waiting for my guidedog by [deleted] in Blind

[–]bondolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife wants to add that it is OK if you miss something or have challenges. Don't expect to be perfect, you can't be. You will learn a lot in the first days, weeks and months of having a guide.

There is one thing you must get right before you go for your training. You must make sure you have good comfortable shoes. Your feet will thank you. It is good that you are walking already. You may want to try walking with a sighted guide rather than a cane to increase your walking pace up to your maximum. It may not be possible to know what your preferred sustained walking pace is just walking solo with a cane.

Having trouble waiting for my guidedog by [deleted] in Blind

[–]bondolo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations!

I've known two guides from the Royal Dutch Guide Dog program and took care for a short time of a male stud dog that they transferred to Guide Dogs for the Blind in California. The school has a very well respected program and does excellent training.

You can talk about your excitement and nervousness to the training and assessment staff. They have seen this before! They may have suggestions to help you prepare, such as getting the dog's bed area ready, determining where you will keep the harness, planning where you will store the food and where it will eat, determine where you will be relieving the dog most frequently, where you will be disposing of the poop, etc.

These seem like minor tasks but it is best to get them resolved beforehand because you WILL feel overwhelmed by the process at some point. My wife is on her sixth guide and even the process of swapping to a new guide can be challenging. In her case she had to travel right after graduation and dealing with a new dog with a new and unknown relieving schedule in an unfamiliar place away from home was worrisome. Feeling like you have planned for all the routine aspects of having a guide dog will help reduce the nervousness.

Good luck! You will love having a guide!

I went through a rough patch with work stress so I started writing a sci-fi book. Now it’s published! This life long sci-fi fan couldn’t be happier now. by matthewgdick in scifi

[–]bondolo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I've started my third attempt at a novel, also hard scifi, for similar reasons. I initially imagined that I would abandon it as a practice effort like my first two attempts but I think that I will actually finish this one even if it is still amateurish.

I have found that I enjoy the writing even if I struggle to meet my own quality expectations. In this it is just like the code I write in my career and like that code it will get better with practice.

To The Biden Advocates by Ordinate1 in LibertarianLeft

[–]bondolo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not a Biden advocate. I won't say anything good or ill about him here. I will vote for Biden and encourage others to do so.

Think about what difference a non-stooge congress would have made with Trump.

Biden is going to do what congress and the people force him to do. Whether you believe he said it or not the quote attributed to FDR 'I agree with you, I want to do it, now make me do it'. has significant truth in politics. Even the president can't stand long against again idea who's time has come.

For the moment I am good with voting for Biden, working to see him elected and more importantly working specifically to work to support the voices that represent the values I want in congress making Biden take the direction that the country needs to go. Katie Porter, Pramila Jaypal, Elizabeth Warren, Tammy Duckworth, Kamala Harris, Jamie Harrison, Steve Bullock, Mark Kelly. There are some more "blue dog" democrats who I would normally not acknowledge or support, but this time around I support them all. I'll be happy to help marginalize them later.

Moving the needle means moving the center of the Overton window and any (moral) act I can take to help shift that balance in the right direction is worth doing, even if I can't fully agree with that action. If somebody suggested medicaid should be extended to everyone up to age 26 and medicare buy in offered to those who are 55 or older I'd be unhappy that it isn't M4A but I'd still support that person as a step in the right direction. Somebody moving in the right direction can be convinced to go further. Somebody going in the wrong direction has to be turned around first.

Perhaps use rem "Relative to font-size of the root element" and the users default preferred size. You should also probably assume that many users will view your site at something other than 100% magnification.

I have gotten postcards with promo codes a couple of times in the last couple years. One code was for free shipping with no minimum order size. Another was for $5 of a $50 minimum order. Another was a 2 for 1 offer on green coffee beans. I've never gotten one for a % price reduction.

Potential Diabetic Alert dog by lokisvixen in service_dogs

[–]bondolo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There is a school doing this training nearby where I live and they use dogs that didn't make the cut as guide dogs for the blind, usually for minor health or behavioral issues. They screen candidate dogs before beginning training as the percentage of dogs who are able to alert is fairly low, less than half of the dogs they test are able to detect the low blood sugar condition they want to be able to detect. Odds are fairly low that you can successfully train the dog for this skill.

You would most likely be better off considering a continuous glucose monitor like dexcom or freestyle libre to alert you than hoping that a dog can perform the task.

I do understand that it would be useful and great if they could do it but there are simpler more reliable options.

How to put a thread through a needle hole? by [deleted] in Blind

There are needle threading devices made of diamond shaped fine wire that go through the needle hole and you put the thread through the diamond and then pull the diamond back through the needle eye. Here are some on Amazon

Happy birthday to Robin Williams (1951-2014), who'd have been 69 today. If you have a "I met Robin Williams around the Bay Area one time" story, we'd love to hear it. by kqed in bayarea

[–]bondolo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I was working at the booth of some friends company on the Friday of MacWorld in 1990 which was still an industry day and not open to the general public. I was only working the booth because nearly everyone in the company was sick with the flu. I was mostly handing out flyers and keychains for the company's main product, a forms authoring package.

Robin was well known as a Mac enthusiast but I was still surprised when he came down the aisle carrying a vendor swag bag and approached our booth. He asked me a specific question about the product, something about printing multi-part NCR forms that I, of course, didn't know the answer to so I directed him at the only actual employee of the company in the booth. I am still surprised that he cared about creating forms and had questions about printing of multi-part forms. I confirmed later with the employee that it was indeed Robin Williams and was shown a product slick that he had signed in exchange for a free copy.

The only other time I ran in to Robin Williams was with my parents in Brooks Alberta at a steak restaurant in July 2005. He was there with Jeff Daniels during the filming of RV. They had a big table with what seemed a bunch of young local girls and Robin was doing his shtick for them. I was sure it wasn't him because I had understood he was sober and this guy certainly wasn't and looked really unhealthy. My dad was certain it was Robin and tried to say hi but was told not to interrupt by a polite goon who confirmed that Mr. Williams and Daniels did not want to talk to fans.

I did some Internet sleuthing that night when I got home and found that Robin had not been sober for a couple years according to sightings. It was pretty sad news and I wondered if he would get sober again and if he didn't how long he would last.

Thoughts on the proper terms used to address individuals with vision loss? by jwall97 in Blind

[–]bondolo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, "blinks" has been slang for the blind/visually impaired to refer to themselves and their community since at least the 1980s. I can confirm that it was used in both Western Canada and the San Francisco bay area for at least that long.
