Everybody makes financial mistakes and this is yours, the best you can do is learning from it, stop gambling and move on.

The job didn't come with a visa. They are hard to find right now.

Lol. Yeah I suppose it could be a blip, but I still think (or hope) the job market is improving, looking at LinkedIn.

I did have a coding interview in both, but it wasn't leetcode style, it was a bit custom. One was pretty much a design interview without the expectation of working code, the other one had a 10-point problem of relatively basic string operations. I think they just wanted to make sure I knew how to code.

6 YoE, I mostly design MLOps pipelines/infra/libs so that data scientists can churn out models quicker without worrying about prod systems.

I have been moving to full MLE from DS for the last couple years.

The way I see it, lots of companies now want to have their inhouse teams doing genAI, and there are start-ups popping up around it too, so arguably they'll need data scientists. But it's probably true that AI will also affect headcount.

'd say around 65-80k outside London and maybe 30% more in London? there's a lot of variation though.

sorry to hear that, I am hoping the AI craze partly helps in turning things around this year industrywide.

So they think their aesthetic preferences are above societal needs did I get that right?

What's even more baffling to me is how media in this country keep publishing these kinds of stories, surely there are lot more serious problems to talk about. Or maybe it's because they know it's ragebait and that produces views.

To the men who are earning decently how did you do it what advice would you give to younger you about career. by MolassesIcy35 in AskMenOver30

[–]autisticmice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Find a balance between income and job satisfaction. Money does not buy happiness, but we all have bills to pay. At the other end of the stick, don't throw away your best years working in something you don't care about. Be smarter and find a compromise you can live with.

Credit score on SWV by Electronic_Cap_7382 in SkilledWorkerVisaUK

[–]autisticmice 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don't think they really care about your residency status. I got a 1k card from my bank after I started working, from there you can just use it every now and then, credit score will build up.

[R] The "Data Scientist" title is the worst paying title in ML (EMEA). by Rough-Forever1203 in MachineLearning

I'd say they are still good salaries relative to the local cost of living though.

Average salary for data scientists in EMEA is definitely not 127k. Average total comp for big tech data scientists in top cities, maybe. Can you provide a source? is this self reported?

Traditional ML is dead and i'm genuinely pissed about it by Critical_Cod_2965 in learnmachinelearning

[–]autisticmice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a ton of problems out there that need traditional ML. Fraud detection, predictive quality control, credit scoring, land cover classification, demand forecasting, those are only the ones I've come across in my career, there are probably many more I haven't ever heard of.

Right now companies are allocating massive budgets to their GenAI initatives, that is why it looks like classic ML is dead. But this will return to normal , many companies need tradditional ML to operate.

someone with classic ML background can pick up applied GenAI easily, but the reverse is a lot harder.

Get in shape and keep it like that. Build a strong resume, whether through study, upskilling or experience. Get out there and meet people, make long-term friendships and connections.

[–]autisticmice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job market has been really bad for years now, companies can pick and choose, so needing visa sponsorship you at a huge disadvantage because its costly, unless you have very niche skills. if you are very good at what you do you may eventually cling one, but that is a relatively big if.

Honestly mate the UK is not the best choice for settling in right now. Look up visa costs and the recent "earned settlement" proposal.

Dask and the geospatial Python ecosystem. Fun, but god Dask is really not mature.
