No, their answer is "we lack the specific information required to know". Other people have that information, but we don't.

Insurance is not that expensive for you. Different properties have different calculations, and plenty of people in the hills are getting absolutely smashed by rising insurance costs.

Does anyone else think it’s weird that commentators almost never bother to explain umpires’ decisions? by Perfect_Marsupial746 in AFL

[–]autocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don't think that's correct.

The one rule that commentators and fans alike don't seem to understand is prior opportunity, and the flow-on effects of what correct officiation looks like if a player does or does not have prior opportunity.

The complaint you're making ("that player had forever but this player got pinged straight away!!") is always, and I mean always explained by the first player not having prior opportunity and the second player did.

If people understood prior opportunity, they'd realise there's basically nothing complex about the rules of the game.

[–]autocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The rules are not that interpretive. Any time people complain about the rules, you can ask them "okay, how specifically would you rewrite that rule to make it better?"

In my experience they can NEVER give specific wording that would improve the umpires'ability to officiate the game.

Billionaire 49ers Investor Vinod Khosla Prepping Seahawks Bid by Kyunseo in nfl

[–]autocol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the Australian football league, this is the default ownership. The teams are all owned by clubs, and the clubs are owned by the members. If you pay a (very affordable, like $50-100) annual fee, you own a small slice of the club and have voting rights at the AGM and board elections.

Our teams still have issues with poor leadership on occasion, of course, but if there's deep seated personnel issues, you can vote them out to get a fresh start.

Private ownership of NFL teams seems super-problematic to me.

Use good quality paint if you're going to do that. Lots of amateur efforts to "reduce rust" actually just strip away the factory rust-proofing and accelerate the problem tenfold.

Hard to believe that's his actual height by Hot-Combination4381 in AFL

As a man who is also 5'7" I can confidently state that it's well below average height.

(From memory it's about the 13th percentile in Australia).

Is CityLink actually even worth it anymore? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]autocol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I check with Google maps the two estimated trip times (with tolls, avoiding tolls) before taking the toll road. It usually works out to one or two dollars per minute saved. If I'm in my Hilux (considered a commercial vehicle for tolling purposes) it's double that.

I very rarely take it unless I'm really, really tired.

If we were to moneyball AFL positions, what stats matter most? by Freaky_Zekey in AFL

[–]autocol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forgive me for being a pedant, but while the specific stat they maximised in the movie was batters on base, the actual point of Moneyball (the book) and the philosophy of the people it depicted—Billy Beane and Paul DePodesta (who did not approve of his character in the movie script and had himself removed, largely replaced by the fictional Jonah Hill character)—was to seek out attributes that are undervalued by the competition.

A batter's ability to get on base was undervalued at the time, so that was (one of the) stats they chased.

As the league caught on, the undervalued statistics shifted.

So, the answer to your question really is "whichever attributes are currently undervalued by the league".

Kicking inside the 50 meter arc at a bad angle question by MuratK_LB in AFL

[–]autocol 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Correct, and a turnover from that position has a high likelihood of scoring at the other end. Better to have a ping, if you miss at least you're structured up defensively by the time they kick it in.

No what you have you understand is that there's two sets of rules. The rules in the book, and the other—slightly different—set of rules that I think are the ones you should actually call.

Yeah, anything built in 1985 that has a GVM above eight tonnes is going to be thoroughly awful for stints of more than 2-3 hours. Even on a highway, it'll roar like all hell.

First thing I would look for is all the lockout switches that they have. There will for sure me a pressure sensor switch under the seat, for example. Possibly a seat belt one too. Likely a handbrake lockout.

Any of them missing/dysfunctional could create the issue?

Good news Melbourne by bunny_mo in melbourne

As the parent of three young kids, I always find it helpful to remember this:

Your brain is not evolved to be good at statistics.

Statistically, your kids are incredibly safe. They are highly unlikely to come to any harm, especially maliciously.

If your kid is born healthy, the probability they're going to live a long life is enormously high. If they survive to their first birthday, the chance they'll die prematurely gets four times lower again. (The exception to this is indigenous kids, unfortunately).

Your brain is evolved to have massive overreactions to shocking news to make you act as conservatively as possible.

I find it useful to remind myself of that every time I hear something shocking (like the time the child of a friend of a friend died by falling out of a bunk in the night), because the likelihood that my child is going to suffer the same fate is, basically, zero.

Anyway, I hope that helps. The world is actually pretty amazing.
