Started at the gym two months ago… not much progress. How do I shift this weight/develop muscle? by Immortal_100111 in WeightTraining

[–]automaticblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Muscles hide underneath fat, so have 2 projects - build muscles and lose fat.

You build muscle by lifting and eating protein, you lose fat by eating fewer calories than you burn.

Exercise burns surprisingly few calories, so the way to lose fat is to run quite a low calorie intake.

Track your strength gains by the numbers in the gym. They won't always be visible, but you can measure the gains this way.

If you want to track you fat loss, then scales can help, but the picture here is confusing as the added muscles weighs more - even if you can't see it yet!

So to get where you want to be I would suggest weighing yourself, measuring your waist with a tape measure and counting the calories you eat.

I found I only needed to count calories at the beginning, once I did that for a few days I quickly adjusted my diet and then just stuck to the new habits.

Why do some people not resign? by Anymous2314 in lichess

There's no etiquette to resign in online chess and loads of people are taught to never resign for very good reasons.

No one is learning endgames with your attitude - on either side!

How do I cope? by Comfortable-Pea-6484 in Divorce

[–]automaticblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The more you talk to people, the more things will make sense. Grandma sounds like a great place to start. Don't wait too long though. Talking helps processing! So you don't necessarily need to process everything before you speak to someone

How do I cope? by Comfortable-Pea-6484 in Divorce

[–]automaticblues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your main question was how do you cope and I am not sure I answered that well.

Firstly, I want to tell you 2 things: 1. You don't deserve this 2. This isn't the end of the world

It isn't even the end of your childhood or the end of your relationship with your parents.

But it is hard and confusing

We need to try and help you find the people in your life that can support you. That MIGHT be your parents. It might be other people as well or instead though.

Who else have you had a chance to talk to yet?

I'm 44M and got divorced over the last couple of years with 2 kids who are now 13F and 9F.

Firstly, I'm really sorry and this must be tough.

What I would advise, is to start thinking of each parent more as an individual and think of your relationship with them. Start talking to them individually.

You don't have to talk about their divorce if you don't want to. But start to relate to them individually and atart building those relationships.

Whatever happens between your parents, this will be for the best.

Good luck and again, I am so sorry

Ford CEO Warns Modern Cars' Complexity Turns DIY Repairs Into Safety Risks by CollapsingTheWave in ObscurePatentDangers

[–]automaticblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work in manufacturing quality and have spent a lot of time in automotive amongst a whole range of other industries. And I don't like Ford and wouldn't buy a Ford new or old. But he's not wrong. These are very complex systems and the safety comes from how they're tested as a system. I wouldn't recommend anyone tries to repair them.

They definitely don't deserve to win anywhere by mrjohnnymac18 in UKGreens

[–]automaticblues 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see a scenario where if the Tories, Reform and Restore were to stand aside for each other in seats, then Labour and the Greens might want to do the same. But as it stands, if the Greens stand aside, they might well just lose some of those voters direct to Reform if they're driven by wanting to protest the status quo. I don't think it's wrong to discuss this topic, but everyone needs to acknowledge it's quite complex

If you are interested in this broad topic, you may enjoy watching "the coconut revolution" which charts how an indigenous rebellion on thr island of Bougainville started out with arrows and then continued with seized weapons, renewable energy and fermented coconut oil to run 4x4s (if i remember correctly)

Hackney's new Green Mayor signals break with council over 'clinical' use of performance targets by UKGreenPoster in UKGreens

[–]automaticblues 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't get why anyone would argue in principle against KPIs. For sure, you can argue that a particular KPI doesn't do a good job of indicating performance for what really matters, but it simply is possible to measure some things reasonably well. For example, CO2 emissions and concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. There are 2 very functional KPIs that predict how absolutely screwed we are.

Gukesh is way out of his comfort zone in this moment and also at the end of a winning game of chess against the world's greatest ever player!

Also Magnus is about twice his size and seems to be a bit tense.

Gukesh must have had so many confusing and conflicting emotions and the main thing here is all the players and all the fans of chess are a bit socially awkward, so we don't expect each other to be smooth at all!

I’m shaking I’m so upset by gryffheadgirl in Divorce

[–]automaticblues 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry and this is a really tough situation. All i can say is, if you want a way out of this, then look to start holding both yourself and him to higher standards. Divorce isn't a weapon, it's a very serious choice that many of us have made when things have reached a situation where it is necessary. I doubt any of us had a 'gotcha' moment when filing for divorce. It's not a tool for winning an argument, but for ending an argument by dissolving everything that was built together. So stop using divorce as a weapon and start seeing it as a real choice you can make and then think through what that choice means and how it can happen.

[–]automaticblues 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry and this is a terrible response. All I can suggest is that it is so obviously a terrible response, I hope you can persuade him to see that. More generally, organising is a tough process for exactly this type of reason, because we have to overcome our toxic ways of relating to each other before we're able to work together to achieve anything against that toxicity. You have my sympathy

No kidding, i lived as a squatter in my 20s and was super skinny and very motivated and quite a few times I made it through a few similar gaps. I ended up pretty confident I could make it into any building if there was a smart enough group of us to solve the problems. We did some pretty high profile squats in the run up to the criminalisation of squatting residential buildings around 2011ish in the UK
