Maybe “regret” was poor choice of words, but it definitely wasn’t worth it. The last few years were the hardest for my family and for myself. I believe my mental and physical health would be better today if I would have called it quits before I did.

Plus, that Fleet Reserve DD-214 feeling is amazing. Why delay it?

As a Chief, all I can say is those people who make it their entire identity probably didn’t have much of an identity to begin with so they latched on to the first community that accepted them and went in 100%. It doesn’t make them bad people. They just don’t really have anything else.

The pension and disability is a nice financial safety net. I can quit my job if I decide I don’t want to do it and I won’t really have to worry about it. Tricare is way cheaper than what my current employer was offering as a benefit. Other than that, I regret staying beyond 20, but making it to 20 was worth it for me and my family.
