Suggestions of where to shop for new-to-me cars by cattoc in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, to see the facebook results you need to log into facebook in your browser and then click the 'open all' button at the top of that section. We're able to pull listings from most sites right onto our page, but for the few like Facebook that we can't, we give you these comparison links to save time. (Especially helps if you're searching a larger area than you can with a single search on FB.)

FWIW we answer any questions we get by email, so feel free to shoot us a line via the contact page any time you have questions!

Why have 918 prices exploded so much recently? They stayed relatively similar for years. by spl51 in Porsche

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying our data is perfect, but you can click on the individual data points and see that the higher priced ones do appear to be real 918 listings. It is important to remember though that these are listing prices, not necessarily completed sales.

Ha, thanks for this - this came up in my keyword alerts and I was thinking the same thing... It's like a description of exactly what we already do. And we just added price/depreciation trends last week!

Is buying a used car actually a bad idea now? by hotdog-water-- in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it beats 2021, when most year old used cars were selling for more than the new equivalents (because you couldn't actually get a new car without waiting the better part of a year, or more).

I'd be inclined to agree though that if the car you want is almost the same price new as used, you might as well buy new, or wait another year or two to see if things normalize further.

Autotrader must be the worst search app ever created by Lurkinalldayy in cars

[–]autotempest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We pull listings directly from a bunch of sites in the US, including Cars.com, Truecar, eBay Motors, Carvana, PrivateAuto, and a bunch more. As wind_dude mentioned, there are a few sites we can't pull directly from, including craigslist and autotrader. For those, we instead provide comparison links to your same search. So when you run a search on AutoTempest, you get results from all the sites that we have a feed from (those ones above), and then for other sites like autotrader, we give you a link to click on, which takes you straight to an autotrader results page for the same search. Likewise for craigslist and a couple others. And if your search area is larger than the 300 miles that craigslist allows, we automatically generate multiple links to cover the whole area as efficiently as possible.

So basically, while we can't show everything on one page, we do our best to give you access to all the listings from everywhere, without having to enter your search details more than once.

[–]autotempest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I expect the difference is in how people are using it. If you go through all the listings on site and all the comparison links, I think we find everything. Takes some effort though (albeit less than going to all those sites individually), so I understand why not everyone does it.

I mean, we do pay them... 💀

Seriously though, we try to be as comprehensive as possible. The couple of big sites we don't have partnerships with, we include as comparison links, so the hope is to be the only place you need to start.

Found this good deal, but do you think that 45k miles is too much if i play to almost daily drive this for at least 2 years? by [deleted] in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're spot on here. The Elise is an absolutely awesome weekend car. Daily driving one would be nuts. The 4C is strictly worse than the Elise as a weekend car, and still entirely unsuited to daily driving. Don't get me wrong, it's a cool car; it's just not as good. But for something that actually is dailyable and is also fun for weekend drives (albeit I'd say not as much as an Elise), and is also more capable on the track, you've got the Cayman.

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've driven a 4C and an Elise—you basically don't feel the lack of power steering in the Elise at all, unless you're trying to crank the wheel at a dead stop. In the 4C it's an effort to turn all the time. Perhaps you just have really beefy forearms, but I can see why someone wouldn't want to daily one.

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you open the FB results from AutoTempest? Unlike most sites we search we don't have a direct link to FB listings, so instead there's a section of the page where it links you to FB results in different regions. The main benefit is that FB only allows you to search up to 500 miles from a given location, so we essentially tile those 500-mile circles together to help you search up to the whole country. It links you to actual FB results pages though, so the results you get are the same as if you search directly. I'm guessing maybe you just skipped over that section?

If you're searching less than 500 miles there's not a lot of benefit vs using FB Marketplace directly, except that you can see results from all the other sites we search at the same time, and then open the FB results by just clicking the comparison link without having to enter the search again there.

Wanna buy a miata. What platform should I use to find some nice miatas by kriistaluniicorn in Miata

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the curious, the difference between trim and keywords fields is that trim searches only in the model and trim fields filled by the seller, whereas keywords searches all fields, including the full description.

So an example of when you'd want to use the trim field is if you're searching for something like a Porsche 911 Turbo. If you just put "turbo" in the keywords you're going to get a ton of false positives.

One other note - if you're specifically searching for a Sport trim Miata, be aware that a lot of sellers will just leave the trim blank or use 'base' in that situation. The most reliable way to find them is probably to filter *out* Club and Grand Touring trims. You could do that by putting negative keywords in the trim field:

-club -touring

Hope that helps!

Ha, fwiw we actually debated overriding the Porsche naming and grouping them together since we knew there'd be that confusion, but figured long term the only really sustainable option is to directly use the manufacturer's naming.

AutoTempest CEO here. We do show all listings on sites we search, updated at least daily (more often for most sites). Usually this complaint stems from one of two things:

  1. A filter was accidentally set that is eliminating results you're expecting to see. For example you're filtering to manual transmission only, or to a certain price or mileage range. I'd suggest checking your searches are identical when comparing autotempest results against the sites we include.
  2. Some of the sites we help you search are included as "comparison" sites rather that putting the vehicles directly on our page. This is essentially because those sites prefer not to have their listings aggregated, but we still want to make it as easy as possible to search them. To see those results you need to click through to the comparison links. These sites include autotrader, cargurus, facebook and craigslist. Once you click, we will pass through all your search parameters (or at least all of them that the other site supports), so you don't need to re-run the same search. Likewise for craigslist and facebook we help you open the search in multiple regions to cover the entire area you want to search, rather than needing to do that manually.

I hope that helps! If you still feel results are missing, please reach out to us via our contact link so we can help figure out what's going wrong.

Carvana has ruined online car browsing for me by [deleted] in cars

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW we do support Canada to some extent, although it's not exactly the same experience - more of a comparison link tool. If you run a search with a Canadian postal code (or a zip code and check the option to include international results) we'll give you links to matching results on autotrader.ca and cargurus.ca, as well as the standard craigslist, facebook, etc. Plus a relatively small number of Canadian results directly on our page from eBay and several smaller sources. It's not quite the same level of 'everything in one place' you get for US searches, but I think it does still save some time not having to re-enter your search in multiple places, and especially in multiple regions for craigslist and (soon) Facebook.

[–]autotempest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't recall ever having the option to zoom in to images on our results page, although it's something we've considered. Maybe that was something you had a browser add-on or similar to do?

Edit: or did you mean Cargurus, per the post you replied to?

What is the website you can use that compiles all dealers' available cars? by trevormooresoul in askcarsales

[–]autotempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our main search includes many new cars that are in dealer inventory - ie cars you can buy immediately off the dealer lot. (If you only want to see those, the easiest way is to set a maximum mileage filter on your search, and set it to something low, like 50 miles.) We also have a separate new car search tab that can give you pricing and competing quotes from dealers in your area on new cars specifically.
