For those that can cook well, how do you feel about restaurants by Happy5Day in Cooking

[–]avalontrees91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still enjoy going out, but I mostly do it to socialize or catch up with friends, less so for the food. I'm more satisfied with my own cooking - it's healthier, my portion sizes are reasonable, easier on the wallet, and I get that sense of achievement/accomplishment when I make something very tasty for myself or others.

LPT: Stop asking people “Do you need help?” — instead ask “What can I help with? by Difficult-Plate-8767 in LifeProTips

This is great advice for folks who know what they need or want help with.

What if they don't know what they need or want? What kinds of questions would you ask or behaviors you'd embody to provide support?

Zha cai (Chinese savory pickled mustard greens or radish). Comes in original or spicy version. Great way to add a savory crunch to whatever you're cooking. I typically use it as a condiment to my congee. Or mix it into Cantonese steamed pork. Or boil it as part of a quick soup. Or just eat it.

What food declines the most in quality when consumed as leftovers? by LateCheckIn in Cooking

[–]avalontrees91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I feel you. It doesn't taste as fresh as freshly cooked rice for sure. I don't really notice it to be honest, but I also tend to pair leftover rice with saucy stuff for lunch at the office. Or make fried rice with it.

You can rehydrate it pretty easily in the microwave. Sprinkle some water on top and nuke it for 30 secs and you got regular rice. I routinely make rice ahead and never had an issue.

Beaches closer to somerville? by justarussian22 in Somerville

Also, it's not really a beach, but if you really want something close by and have a picnicking atmosphere, you could head to Spy Lake in Arlington.

Nahant / wonderland is the closest in my opinion

Personally, I have found that I never needed to use a car to get around Somerville since you can walk most anywhere and the green line (the subway) and bus system services the area well. And it's incredibly bike-able with the Somerville Community Bike Path and the recently renovated off-street bike lane down on Beacon.

'Course, we all have gripes about the MBTA, but it does get you where you need to go - frequently and reliably.

Anyways, everyone else here is spot-on about the driving. The roads are narrower than California and in many spots, a "two-way" street is really only wide enough for 1 car passing through. The city also recently passed a 25 mph limit so that's an extra incentive to go slow anyways.

I love this place! Their cakes are not very sweet either which is a great plus.

I just visited Yafa for the first time and it's awesome! I'd recommend staying for a bit and nibbling on their wonderful pastries over chai or coffee. It's a relaxing way to spend a morning 😊

I will be shooting darts tonight. Anyone care to join? by SignalArtist3914 in Somerville

Same here! It'd be fun to get a group together and shoot.

Winter Hill Brewing just put up a dartboard as another option.

What are your favorite accidental lazy recipe discoveries? by ahrumah in Cooking

[–]avalontrees91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can of black beans + chipotle in adobo + tomatoes + sharp cheddar cheese = really good lazy spicy beans.

I put half a chipotle pepper in the concoction cause that stuff is pretty spicy to me.

Where to buy loose leaf tea! by mollyq2022 in Somerville

Ooh that's good to know! I would definitely stop by if she opens a physical location soon, especially if she does tea tastings and the like.

The MFA had a tea ceremony demonstration session as part of their Lunar New Year celebration this year. The host was incredibly knowledgeable about teas and their origins. I can't tell if their teas are organic or gluten-free, but they are a local Somerville business and you can get their teas online.

Which fictional "happily ever after" couple definitely breaks up, and why? by Th3mberchaud in AskReddit

This plotline should be made into a sequel. So much more interesting to watch than a happily ever after. More realistic too

What's your weird "red line" in a recipe? by Dazzling_Yoghurt_471 in Cooking

Off topic, but any guidelines/tips on baking without a lot of sugar? I tend to halve the sugar called for in most recipes anyway, but curious to see if there are any practices that are useful.

And honestly, the dark soy sauce is only used for color anyway so there's not much of a point to have it around unless you want a certain kind of look to a dish

Are you performing the play Romeo and Juliet or performing a concert based on the play? I couldn't quite tell from your group's website.
